TheMightyEthan
So I've been looking for a way to play games on my desktop through my laptop, and a couple days ago I finally hit on Splashtop. It's basically a remote desktop app that gets fairly consistent 20-30 fps (instead of the ~5 most remote desktop apps get) with low latency. I've been playing XCOM through it and it's fantastic. I wouldn't want to play anything that requires fast reflexes, but for a turn-based game like XCOM it's wonderful. It's basically like my own little personal Onlive system. I've only been using it to play from the living room over my own network, so I'm not sure how well it would work over the internet (and you'd have to set up a VPN because it's designed just for home networks), but it lets me play games in the same room as my wife without hogging the TV. It's also got Android and iOS client apps, which could be nifty. Haven't tried them yet. *Edit* - It also supports different resolutions, and will scale the image accordingly. So it might be a handy way to play something like FTL on a netbook that doesn't have a big enough screen. Or on a tablet, for that matter.
Eleven
I'd love to do this on my iPad, playing point and click adventure games. The iPad app is 2.99, and i kinda don't wanna buy it yet, and I'm not jailbroken. If i do buy it, I'll report back! I'm currently looking for a good VNC app anyway. This and Screens are the top choices on the iPad apparently.
TheMightyEthan
Wow, iOS users are getting hosed. The Windows, MacOS and Android apps are free.
Eleven
Apparently it's supposed to be free for a limited time on Android, since August. I took a look at the price history and it is $19.99 for the iPad. Was on sale for $2.99 the other day, now it's at $4.99. Holy Crap! I got the iPhone app for free though. Eleven
Since I want to get in on the discount, I researched and this is what I found: http://toucharcade.com/2011/05/14/splashtop-review/ Sounds like Ethan's experience with it. Also: Using your iPad running Splashtop and your iPhone running Joypad, you can do a surprising amount of PC gaming on your iPad. Sure, the setup couldn't be more convoluted since you're using two iOS devices, a reasonably specced out gaming PC, and two different paid apps to do it, but how else are you ever going to be able to play World of Warcraft on your iPad? TheMightyEthan
One thing I forgot to mention: Splashtop doesn't work with a lot of fullscreen apps (ie games), but if you make it run in a borderless window instead it works fine. That's how I've been playing XCOM.
deanb
Figured I'd throw this in here since I know a few folks are eyeing up streaming: http://obsproject.com/
WhitePawn
Figured I'd throw this in here since I know a few folks are eyeing up streaming: http://obsproject.com/ I second this. Ever since xSplit decided to go pay-to-use, this is a valuable back up. Easy to get around, and puts out a great, quality stream.
