System Shock 2 now out on Steam and GOG.

OMG THERE'S A SYSTEM SHOCK THREAD NOW *squeal*

 

System Shock 2 is phenomenal. One of the best and hands down the scariest game I've ever played. I try to replay it every now and then but there's actually like a 5% chance I make it past the spiders without crying and screaming so much that I can't see the screen.

So, I recall FDS mentioning that GOG version may have better optimization. Yes, no?

That's GoG's whole deal besides DRM-free.

I'm pretty sure the Steam and GOG versions are identical. From what I heard, the Steam version can even run without Steam.

Well, I just logged out of Steam and tried launching the game directly. I can confirm that it's true.

 

I've actually often heard that there's a decent amount of games that can be launched independently of Steam. Couldn't tell you which ones, though.

GoG version comes with aesthetics stuff too; soundtrack and design document and all that. The design document isn't as cool as I hoped it would be. Basically just one page of "We want to make a game with robots and spaceships!". It doesn't really capture the epicness of the project they were about to undertake.

Yeah there's a bunch of games that pretty much just use Steam as an installer and updater. Even Skyrim in early days ran without Steam.

Really? I wouldn't have expected a steamworks game to be one of those.
