TF2 update is kinda rough but at least theres that silly Dalokohs Bar + Gloves of Running Urgently exploit that makes you practically immortal :^)

Are bare bones in-game tutorials endemic to 4X games?

I think all Endless Space 1 gave me was a bunch of text boxes and then threw me into the Microsoft Excel UI
-
Endless Space 1 is especially bad, but less extreme versions of similar "tutorials" are pretty typical.
-
On the other hand a bunch of RTS games still have you do tutorials of "click her to click here" "click a unit to activate it". SMB 3 is still one of the best tutorials.

Quake Champions is alright but the long load times and large patch sizes (only two patches were 22.22 gb total?) are whats killing it for me.

Mine is currently 9GB downloading for the open beta. I was a bit unimpressed with it (now I can say that). The supers felt clunky, nothing really differentiated the classes/characters. As for loading, I assume the match making, which I found in close beta could take between 1-3 minutes which kinda drags a bit.

When I first boot it up its not unusual for it to sit on that splash screen for around 3-5 minutes

I think i had stopped after losing a few boss fights worth of progress in FC after I forgot to grab a book thats waaaaay off the beaten path
-
Is that book critical? Because that's the kind of thing that'd make me go "fuck it, reading's for nerds anyway".

IIRC, in the first game collecting all the books is how you get the ultimate weapon for one of the two main characters. That's my one complaint about these games, they really go overboard with missable shit. "Oh, you didn't walk back way the fuck across the map to where you were an hour ago just for the hell of it? Well, you missed a side-quest! Now it's gone forever, dumbass!"
Unless you're specifically going for a perfect achievements/points run, I wouldn't worry about any of it. I certainly never do on a first playthrough. It's basically impossible to not miss anything without a guide, so I just enjoy the story on my first run and worry about achievements/points on a replay. Although, the 3rd has an achievement for beating the game on nightmare mode. I've heard scary things about Falcom games on nightmare mode...
