Nintendo did announce their rewards program for Deluxe bundle buyers finally. Anyone who buys the deluxe bundle gets 10% of their purchase total given back for any eShop purchases. SInce Nintendo's making a point to have their software available on the eShop, this effectively gives 10% back on all purchases if you have a hard drive to store the games on. The reward only comes in the form of Nintendo points and those are not redeemable for cash. The offer stands until December 2014. Honestly, that sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me. Considering the broad eShop software lineup that's been announced for the launch window and the fact that retail games can be grabbed on the eShop, it's very believable that a person could make back the extra $50 they spent on the more expensive bundle just in reward points. That's basically buying five new games in a two year span, let alone any smaller purchases that might be made.

Dallas Cowboys (NFL). They came storming back from a big deficit, took the lead, and then lost.

Sounds like being an Irish Rugby fan. When every top critic says "They've got the potential to win a world cup" yet they never do, ya know there's something going wrong somewhere *cough*DeclanKidney*cough*

  4. There needs to be more scanning shit like from Metroid Prime. That's just such a smart way to tell a story in a game and throw in random bits of exposition. It's player initiated, so people only get as much of the narrative content as they want. It doesn't explicitly spell events out for you, instead leaving the player to piece together the bigger picture from the small fragments you pick up out of context along the way. It's also a method of storytelling that's only possible in a video game, and really leverages the medium. It also leaves room for the developer to add a TON of lore and worldbuilding stuff for the people who are interested in that kind of thing, but again without inconveniencing those who don't care.
  5. You're gonna need a fedora on that character
  6. I've made a discovery. Ace Combat has quietly been hosting some of the very best music in the video game industry. Not just Assault Horizon, all of them. Why did nobody tell me about these games? I want to buy Ace Combat 5 for the main theme alone.

They do indeed have some of the best music available in video games. You'll get frustrated by the damn tunnel levels but other than that, its all good fun.

Why would they put tunnel levels in a plane fighting game?

That would be a bit sucky. But this news blip suggests that it's not the case: http://kotaku.com/5953261/ What is the truth of the matter? Damned if I know, Nintendo doesn't talk about that stuff.
  8. Gamestop just shipped me a Gamecube Game Boy player from Sacremento California (so across the nation) in six days. Total cost for the product? $9.99. Awesome.

Living rooms, dorm rooms, TVs shared with house mates... really any circumstance other than having your own private television set hidden away in your own private bedroom. I know that for many that is not a realistic circumstance. I know for me it has never been.

I am very excited about the headphone jack built into the controller. The ability to play in a public place without the horrid/embarrassing writing and porn sounding grunting sound effects will be a blessing. Honestly, maybe THAT is the best reason for Bayonetta 2 to be on the Wii U. The nonsensical narrative and "sexy" (creepy) special attacks can now be kept on your controller and in your earbuds.
  11. You would believe correctly. And I'm suddenly inspired to boot up a new round of Civ V and name all my cities after Metroid locations.
  12. Horizon is a good name for a town. It's pleasant without being sappy. It evokes the future, rather than the past. Also acceptable: Indigo Plateau
  13. An old buddy invited me to play a hardcore Half Life 2 multiplayer mod with him. Apparently he runs some sort of Youtube channel for replays. Guys, I am so screwed. I am in WAY over my head here. And my incompetence is gonna be recorded for posterity :(

I didn't mean you don't get to be mad/frustrated that it happened, but it's unfair to blame the game when you knew there was a chance of failure.

The train was absolutely my least favourite way to travel around Hyrule, and it never felt like a connected living world, more like areas on a mario map.

  16. Good question! I definitely really like the first 50 hours or so. The next 35-40 hours got progressively less compelling. I stopped getting new party members and new moves slowed down and generally there was less discovery in the second half. They also moved away from the huge natural looking Bionis environments to the more industrial Mechonis. These environments were less cool to explore and were less recognizable as being body parts. The second half the the areas didn't have changing music from day to night either, just one track per zone. And then the closer I got to the finale the longer and more in depth the cinematics got... which actually counts as a negative thing, because the story in this game (let's face it) is pretty tepid stuff. So I actually stopped playing the game for a long while just three or four hours out from the very end of everything because I finally ran out of momentum from the totally excellent first fifty hours. When I went back to finish the game, it was mostly just because it bothered me that I'd put 80 hours into the game and still hadn't reached the credits. So did I like it? I dunno. I really liked half of it. The other half was less good. Whether the game counts as a net positive or not, it should be noted that at the very least I admire the game. When the biggest problem with a game is that there are maybe too MANY giant, beautiful, loading screen free environments and that maybe there's too MUCH meticulously choreographed and fully voiced cinematic... well, those are kind of first world problems you know? Too much of a good thing doesn't make the good thing less good.
  17. I should get a job producing eSports. There's potential there, but the broadcasts need work. They can learn a lot from how the NBA is presented on TV (which has long been the sports league with the best television production).

NFL has the "behind the uprights" field goal camera. It also has the "over the top of the action" action camera that moves along cables. So bad.

NHL has the worst camera of them all, though. The "behind the net" camera.

Lol @ Cowboy Poet. I remember when people said the same thing about UFC.

Anyways, I think at this point it's a matter of money to boost up the production values. It's certainly better than it was a year ago. Obviously SK were the ones doing this before anyone so it's taken a while for these new orgs to catch up.

  18. Okay! It took about six months from release, but I've finally finished the game. Xenoblade is finished. It was a battle. There are few games that really make me feel like the designer didn't want me to finish them. SMT Strange Journey made me feel that way. The obstacles to clearing that game are so steep that when I cleared them I felt like I had achieved a superhuman and entirely unreasonable feat. This game made me feel something similar, but in an entirely different way... it just WOULD. NOT. END. JRPGs are notorious for having extended finales, but this game puts all others I've played to shame. It made it hard to finish just because of the ridiculous amount of content. Every time I thought I was winding things down the game would say "nope! Here's another fully rendered giant environment to run around and level up in! Work hard, because there are half a dozen more bosses here too!" Finishing Xenoblade is not proof of my skill, it is proof of my determination.
  19. Whoah! Assassin's Creed 2 is... really good. Wow. I can only imagine that however they resolve this franchise and the character arcs it's gonna be disappointing. This premise is just way too good.

I really liked AC2 and Brotherhood, but Revelations was weak and I was sick of Ezio by that point.

    3. Faiblesse Des Sens

      Faiblesse Des Sens

Considering that ACB and ACR weren't worked on by the main team and that team was working on AC3 the entire time... yes, they are side stories of sorts.

    4. TheMightyEthan

      TheMightyEthan

But they're side stories where major main plot events happen, so people who haven't played them are going to be lost when they play AC3.

  20. I've read a few RE 6 reviews and I have not been impressed. I'm talking about the reviews here, not the game. Review the game you've got, not the game you want. Whether or not modern Resident Evil is similar to the Resident Evil of your childhood is not the issue at hand. Whether modern Resident Evil is fun and if it's improved from the previous installment is what a review should be covering.

    1. Thursday Next

      Thursday Next

Don't think it needs to improve on a previous instalment. If you say that then you open the door to all previous instalments. A review should cover if it is objectively good, that is to say that the game is not broken in some fundamental way, how much they personally enjoyed it, and why they did or did not enjoy it.

    2. TheMightyEthan

      TheMightyEthan

I disagree. I think that whether a game stays true to previous entries in the series is absolutely within the scope of the review. It's not the be-all and end-all of the review by any means, but it's still fair game for discussion, especially if the changes mean it's losing what (some) people liked about it to begin with.

Disclaimer: I have no opinion about RE6 specifically.

    3. VicariousShaner

      VicariousShaner

I think when a developer tells people specifically what they are going for "a more survival horror feel with the Leon campaign", and people fail spectacularly, you can probably fault them for it.

  21. Three of you have played Shatter and are my Steam friend both. You know who you are. You are on notice. My score is bigger than yours.

  22. I need a controller for my computer. I need all the standard inputs so I can play Assassin's Creed, but I need a good D Pad so I can play dustforce. What are some good options?

    4. Faiblesse Des Sens

      Faiblesse Des Sens

@Vicarious. Do you mean controller rather than remote? Well if you don't have one, you obviously can't do that, and if you want a good d-pad, then you shouldn't do that. We've already covered this.

  23. Ha! Not a chance. Capcom is one of the stronger Japanese video game publishers right now. They have better brand recognition both in the West and domestically than SEGA, Konami, or Techmo-Koei. The only Japanese publishers that are really in a better spot than Capcom right now are Sony Computer Entertainment and Nintendo. Capcom is sitting quite comfortably on the second tier below those two mega publishers along with Namco-Bandai and Square-Enix (though ask me again in a year or two and I might have devalued Square Enix... they've got a lot riding on Hitman Absolution and Tomb Raider. If those aren't hits then they've got a problem.) Remember to separate your personal grievances with the products from a company from your assessment of their financial fortunes. The two are only very loosely related. It's very possible to be very profitable without consumer good will after all.
  24. Here's a new prediction: Nintendo initiates a partnership with From Software. Maybe that'll be what's next. From Software makes really hardcore games that don't have equivalents on Nintendo's hardware (Armored Core, Souls series). They're a Japanese developer and their games do well in Japan. They seem to do mostly contract work, working with different publishers for their different projects and franchises. I can totally see Nintendo trying to snag exclusivity either for Armored Core or the next Souls game. 3D Dot Game Heroes was a riff on a lot of old Nintendo game conventions, so that would fit into a Wii U lineup pretty effortlessly too. So they fit the formula. Successful Japanese developer, probably in an economic situation where a partnership would be desirable, they create software that fills a void in Nintendo's current lineup... do we know what they're working on right now? I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this had already happened. It's just such a logical target.
  25. The other day I read an interesting article over at Forbes about how Nintendo has been trying to slowly get their third party support back one franchise at a time. The first big shocker was how they snagged Dragon Quest. I don't believe there's been a single Dragon Quest game or spinoff released on non-Nintendo hardware since... Dragon Quest VIII on the PS2. DQ Monster, Fortune Street, the DQ remakes, DQ 9 and 10, DQ Rocket Slime... who knows what sort of deal they had to cut to achieve this, but Dragon Quest fans have only one place to go these days, and that's to Nintendo hardware. The next big deal was Monster Hunter. That upstart little franchise became Capcom's biggest brand practically overnight and single handedly bolstered the PSP (in Japan at least) and made an entire new genre to boot. Again, we don't really know what sort of deal has been struck between Nintendo and Capcom, but look at where Monster Hunter is headed for the next year. A 3DS remake, a Wii U HD remake, and the 3DS exclusive Monster Hunter 4. No further Monster Hunter Portable games (the mega successful PSP titles) have been announced. And most recently, Nintendo took another and entirely more risky gamble. While Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter are juggernauts, Fatal Frame is anything but. But Nintendo bit anyway. They now partially own the IP and for the forseeable future that franchise is going to be Nintendo exclusive. Just like with Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest, there's been a mix of remakes and original franchise installments on Nintendo hardware in recent years. So here's our pattern: Nintendo will try to secure exclusivity for the biggest brands in Japan. Nintendo will aim for IP that diversify their portfolio (none of those franchises really have equivalents within Nintendo's first party brands). Nintendo will try to secure both new games and remakes of past installments on their hardware. Finally, the question. If you had to guess, which IP will be next? My guess? Tales. It has a history of appearing on Nintendo hardware, it's popular in Japan, the Tales Studio has run into some financial issues of late (meaning that maybe they would be more open to a Nintendo partnership that came with development funds), and Nintendo seems to be on very close terms with Namco right now considering that Smash Bros 4 is being developed there. If I had to guess, I would say that we'll see Tales begin to migrate more and more to Nintendo hardware over the next few years. The remake of Tales of the Abyss on 3DS already fits the pattern to a T. What are your thoughts? If you were a Nintendo executive, which IP would you target next?
