  1. At least it's not as bad as my 'cookie'/ 'kooky' palava. That was embarassing.
  2. I just turn a film off as soon as I realise it's irredeemably bad. Which is pretty easy to judge in most cases. You can tell if a movie's going to be "oh this is messy but not actually bad, has integrity' or 'this is just hamfisted. The whole film is going to be poor'. If I'm confused by it and can't tell if it's bad or not, even if it's just not to my taste, I'll stick with it: that almost always works out well. On-topic: Dad got if for me for my birthday: just watched it. So, so awesome. Perfect blend of 'really enjoyable thriller' and 'art-housey shit'. A bit off-topic:
  3. Anybody read Saga? I haven't read it yet, but just ordered the first five issues. Brian K Vaughan is my favourite comics writer. Can't hyperlink from iPad: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saga_(comics)
  4. Brazil is a crazy one. It's ingenious because it's dystopian to watch as well as dystopian in theme. Hence why it's hard to watch. Really confrontational. I love the twisted humour in it. Like a comic/ satirical sci-fi version of 1984. I find Kafka really difficult, too, for the same reason. But I usually don't find novels as gripping as films so I can't stick with them. Huge PKD fan, so very looking forward to Bladerunner. Would like to read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? just to get the original story. Which is probably very different. Nice avatar big dan!
  5. I should probably play the game more. Considering that you guys sound like you've played the game a lot longer than I have and I reviewed it... But I just don't have time. Do fucking love it, though.
  6. What is Datura? Looks really nice. Reminds me of that new one thats visual style is Victorian grit. It's a procedurally generated FPS thing. What's it called... Ah: 'Sir, You Are Being Hunted'.
  7. I had big problems with In Bruges, but I would never call it bad. The second half saved it for me. Really clever. TDKR definitely wasn't as good as TDK or BB. BB is my favourite, but honestly, seeing BB and TDK back-to-back in a cinema like I did... There's no other way to see them afterwards. I would never subject someone to one of those films by itself now. It has to be both in a row. Just stunning how powerful they are when combined. They're greater than the sum of their parts. TDKR doesn't fit with those two though, it doesn't feel like part of the trilogy in terms of quality. The impeccable plotting of TDK and the impeccable thematic development of BB just isn't there. It's messy and the each individual plotline, while strong, doesn't fit or mesh with the rest of the film. I still really liked it though. The final montage thing I felt was really powerful, if a bit obvious and hamfisted. My analysis of the trilogy: Batman Begins: Batman being Batman. The Dark Knight: Joker being Joker The Dark Knight Rises: Batman... Walking around and... There's Bane being kinda good... But in the end... And... Stuff... It's a mess. Last good actual movie... Can't remember. Gotta watch Bladerunner soon for class. I have to watch Bladerunner, The Truman Show, Brazil, and the Stepford Wives (early version) for a class on Utopias. Gonna be fucking amazing.
  8. So I just watched . By God there's some great stuff in there, that I had no idea existed. (Only watch if you've played Arkham City enough. Big spoilers. And loads of awesome oober-secrets and easter eggs.) Now I feel like I have a pretty excellent and deep view of where the canon's at, what's going on. And I think I see what Rocksteady are going to do. Now, that's a whole lot of assumption. But it's very late, I'm very tired, and I'm getting excited and rambling about this. I really dig the mythology to this series, and in terms of how they can release the games and what they're trying to achieve with them, that's the only way I can see it working.
  9. Pretty good if you check <http://isitold.com> on Is It Old.com. A search within a search.
  10. Yeah fair enough mate. Def one of those games which isn't going to lead you through, and to, fun scenarios; you need to make the fun yourself. Needs a certain mindset. Maybe come back to it in future. I had to do that with FarCry 2 which I think does the same thing.
  11. It's really great. Good to hear you're enjoying it so much, Atom. Tenshi, reading my review might help understand what there is to love. The visual style is the last thing that the game's about (though personally I like how functional and sturdy it is). http://pressxordie.com/2012/07/25/review-dragons-dogma/
  12. Yeah, it's simply regen that won't be mid-combat. About health potions all he said was 'there'll be no more health potions mid-combat or anything' but he said this deferentially in a list; suggesting health potions won't be around at all. Which I like. But I'm not sure how I feel about regenerating health. As long as health is an actual issue in the game I'll be happy. This looks actually pretty great. Surprisingly.
  13. WOOL IT WAS WOOL YOU'RE THE BEST EDIT: Ordered. And EDIT: I've got a bad habit on X-Chat where I just enjoy the chat people have and neglect to really put statements to names. I should probably see to that. Better remember who I'm talking to or who says what.
  14. Nah... It had a one-word name. Four letters I think. Like 'hoop' or 'loop' or ring' or something. Was 5 novellas collected into one omnibus volume. The cover was all golden and honey-coloured. Maaaan. On-topic: for my dissertation I just got like 5 Cormac McCarthy novels. And I got some William Gibbons, who seems great and seminal, and I got some Huxley, which also seems seminal. GOOD READING TIMES AHOY
  15. This is tearing me apart: I spoke to someone on x-chat (Spork maybe, or Shoshk, or Ark) who recommended a novella series. 5 books, in an omnibus. Apparently great. Seemed it. But I have forgotten the name. Have the money and time to buy and read but can't find them. Anyone help? Sounded like sci-fi or fantasy, sci-fantasy, but nothing is helping me find it. They were about some society underground or something; at least the first one was. Pos-apocalyptic kind of thing for a starting point. Also, yeah the Hobbit is great. LotR can gtfo.
  16. Chew is fucking great. I recommend it highly, also. If anyone feels 'meh' about it, or knows nothing about it, just read a synopsis on Wikipedia or something. The concept alone is absolutely hilariously twisted and great. My only concern is that it was originally intended only as a 10-issue run or so. After the first issue or two it got picked up for, like, 40 more issues. Not sure if they can drag it out that long. Re: Killing Joke: I feel the same way. It was very good, but I felt well overhyped. At the first Kapow! Comic Con me and a friend were staying at the Hilton which all the celebrities were staying at. Sitting at the table right next to us at breakfast was Brian Bolland: the guy who drew Killing Joke. Had a chat with him about Grant Morisson's Batman & Robin (which is great). So cool.
  17. Spelunky HD: accidentally threw a gold statue head onto a sacrificial plinth. Khali accepted my sacrifice. And a little golden monkey appeared. Who kills enemies. Collects stuff. And SHITS LOOT

He was goddamn great while I lasted. Do you just pick him up and carry him around with you?

Yeah, but he runs out of shitting gold fairly quickly. God that game....its so damn infuriating. Its a lot better in short bursts. Playing it safe rewards you more, but being risky is always a bit more fun.

  18. The Walking Dead Episode 1 by Telltale was fucking amazing. Not a huge fan of the point+click genre but by god. Fantastic stuff.

I played the demo yesterday and I enjoyed the gameplay and what I saw of the story. I wish I had the funds to pick it up during the Steam sale.

  19. I never experienced any trouble with post-cutscene weapon changing. In many of the cutscenes he keeps hold of whatever he had before hand and you still have it afterwards; the times when you lose your weapons after cutscenes are because in the cutscene Max drops or changes his weapon for some reason. It seemed more like a design decision for me. I loved Last Stand. I think it works enough to be justified. The times when you can't hit the guy who got you are very rare in comparison to how many times it works. I think it works great as a 'lives' system and as punctuation to the amazing action.
  20. I remember in an article Rockstar said that GTAIV was around the same size as San Andreas, maybe slightly larger. But not by much. GTAIV's hard to estimate because it's so detailed. GTAV is definitely going to be bigger than both regardless; they have said that it's large enough to make flying vehicles justified as transport means.
  21. Nah; GTAIV's LC is actually about the same size as SA. When you go back and play SA, it's really not that large, just really fucking well designed! GTAV will hopefully be huge.
  22. Be big enough? And yeah, in the initial rumour blowout thing (of which many of the rumours sounded totally legit), the world was alleged to be 5 times bigger than GTAIV's: which would definitely fit that bill.

We need to take something back. On-topic: pretty damn straight. Sometimes I wonder if I'm straight or not then I imagine kissing a guy and feel fucking repulsed and that puts the nail in the coffin. (I don't find homosexual people repulsive or males in general, not at all, I like them; it's just the idea of that kind of mouth contact at my mouth AH GOD. GROSS.).
  24. Actually enjoying Dragon's Dogma more than Skyrim. What

Why is that surprising? I hope people are realizing that after the hype has died down it's checklist& mini-map: the game.

Really want to pick it up...might get it by xmas. Hopefully it'll get a decent price cut.

  25. Yeah, that is a good analysis. You have to switch off your brain a little, try not to analyse it too deep, because he never really goes for depth. Re: direction alone: Moonrise Kingdom is one of the best films I've seen for years and years. The title card and ending card sequences are just unbelievably excellent, and it even has thematic development evoked through certain camera techniques and quirks that he uses. It's awesome. Really warm and fulfilling. Very well edited, too.
