  1. Speaking of wanting to hear back from someone who tries to game with a Logitech G13 and a mouse on a TV... Seriously, Ethan, do you have a lap desk similar to what I pasted above? Can you try gaming with a mouse and your G13 on your TV and let me know how playable that is?
  2. Not sure about any recent games, but I know that Stranglehold was going to be region locked, a decision which was reversed. Additionally, PSP video disks were region locked, while games were not. Both the PSP and PS3 have the ability to region lock games, but do not. Not sure about the Vita, but I wouldn't be surprised if it does. Assuming the next gen consoles either launch in the same quarter (or I don't purchase one until down the road), region locking (and the hopeful lack thereof) will definitely factor into my purchase.
  3. FYI: I've been gaming on my new PC using a friend's old 8800GT for the last five days or so. It's good enough that I'm not rushing to purchase something at midnight tonight, but I'm definitely interested to see what the 7970 release does to graphics card prices. If anyone sees a good deal on a reasonably high end card in the near future, please keep me in mind. (My motherboard means that SLI/Crossfire is not an option, so while I know those setups can provide good bang for the buck, they're not for me...for the next few years at least.)
  4. Haha. You guys know that there's another thread after this where I laid out all the components I did order, right? In short, 2500K, 240GB SSD, 1TB Barracuda, EVGA Supercooler (which I am very impressed with),16GB of RAM. (I love to multitask, and end up with huge paging files slowing me down on both my work and personal laptop, which have 6GB each, and I figure it's worth the $35 or whatever I ended up paying for the extra 8GB to avoid using the SSD for paging file read/writes, as I type this, I just manually turned off my paging file). I'm gaming with a friend's old 8800GT, which is good enough to enjoy the games I'm playing, and gives me time to see what the 7970 launch does to graphics card prices. I will turn off other programs when I'm gaming, but knowing that I've used more than 8GB with my current laptops, I saw no reason not to spend the extra cash now and get 16GB. (Also, it was one of those crazy 24 hour NewEgg coupon codes so it could have cost me as much or more to add memory down the line, and I know it's best to use the exact same memory modules, which factored into my decision.) As for Mr. GOH's question, I'm considering setting up a theater room/gaming room so I can run the PC to a large 1080p TV as well. I want to get a laptop beanbag desk or something similar. They sell them all over Japan, but a quick google didn't find what I was looking for in English: http://store.shopping.yahoo.co.jp/e-kurashi/q2x81.html http://item.rakuten....mdin/ht-gr-oth/ Roughly $20, beanbag cushion on the bottom, hard plastic top, reasonably sized... My thought process is that having just bought this: That and a mouse should fit pretty comfortably on a reasonably small lap desk, and I'm hopeful that that might play well on a couch and big screen TV. I am interested to know if anyone else has tried that with good/bad results.
  5. Very cool. Just downloaded (but probably won't play for a few days, studying for test) Stealth Bastard. Someone else recommended it to me, and I forgot the name of the game before I got a chance to download it, but I made sure I downloaded it this time. Anyone have any impressions to share of the other four games?
  6. Awesome. Totally looking forward to getting mine. Does the thumbstick feel like an analog thumb stick? Would it be possible to use it as an analog thumb stick in games that support analog thumbsticks when using a joystick? The 8 way input would definitely not be a huge problem, because as you said, if I'm using a mouse, that's all I've been able to use anyway, and now I've got additional useful buttons immediately available.
  7. Whoo! Was able to reschedule my CCNA Voice exam from the 11th to the 9th. We have an all day Sales Kick Off meeting that Pre-Sales is going to on the 10th, so on one hand, I'll have less time to study, but on the other, I'll be taking it *before* the all day meeting/party.

  8. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823126050 Back in stock. $5 off until 1/9, which makes it the cheapest place to buy it at the moment. So yeah, Ethan, I just ordered one. Let me know what you think when you get yours!
  9. Thank you for the Spoiler tag, Dean. Did not click, and follow up comments did not run anything for me. (Good forum.)
  10. Bouncing back and forth between games in small doses, and my gaming time is small doses inbetween family, work and studying. Pretty much every day this week I've played a bit of three or more of the following: Rochard L.A. Noire (w/ wife) Rusty Hearts Killing Floor I'm also usually greeted at lunch (I go home for lunch most days) or getting home from work in the evening with my son asking me to help him with a part of LEGO Batman that he's stuck on. It's an eclectic mix, but it's working.
  11. By not buying it. Duh. Or, as Japan seems fond of doing, making it so that they intentionally restrict themselves to a single region.
  12. Wife and I started playing tonight. So far we both like it. Interesting game.
  13. Coupon seems to be good until the 9th. I'm hopeful it's back in stock before then. :-)
  14. Steam servers are too busy to handle my request? Wha? I can't download any of the remaining games to my new PC because nothing will download at the moment...

Yeah it's been down for quite some time now.

      It's down for maintenance.

      Seems to be up now.

  15. First off, I apologize that I have intentionally not read the thread at all, because I do want to avoid spoilers. If I ask something that's already been asked before, that's fine...but my question is this, "Would this possibly be an entertaining game to play with someone? My wife's not really a gamer, but from the sounds of the game, maybe this is something we could play through together, talking about characters and the story? Yes? No? Maybe? Edit: So I read this: Now I feel really good about the Steam deal.
  16. I am pretty happy with GameSave Manager. It's done the job I was hoping for. So far, so good. I may chime back in when I actually use it to move some games off my SDD.
  17. Ethan, is that the Logitech G13 USB Advanced Gameboard I was talking about being on sale at NewEgg? It's now Sold Out, and I never made a decision about ordering one, so I didn't get one! Ah well...probably better that I get my gaming situation set up, and then figure out if it'd even fit in my current cramped table. And hey, this way I can get your impressions on it! I hope it's great!
  18. Does surviving all the waves of Killing Floor count? I don't see how else you "beat" that game...
  19. Playing it alone just reminded me of a poor mans Fallout 3. Like Ethan, I got into it too late. I'll start by saying that this is my own opinion and that I'm talking about by own taste...but as much as I loved Borderlands, I can't imagine putting a lot of time into it or enjoy it all that much if I wasn't playing with friends. But I thought it was an absolutely fantastic co-op game. Me and three other friends played so much that we ended up grinding solo at level 50 (and later the other maxes) for loot when other people couldn't play...but only because we cared that much about finding and sharing our new guns with other. (And by share, I mean "show-off".) Anyway, I really liked the game, if you couldn't already tell...the art style, sense of humor and co-op fun made me very willing to turn a blind eye to issues in the name of fun. Which one? Pre-DLC? Yeah...the boss was not a highlight of the game. Crawmerax was fun. Or whatever the giant purple lobster guy was called.
  20. Missed passing my CCNA Voice by 2 or 3 questions (out of 70) the first time around. Pretty happy with that, all things considered. Retaking it next week, and pretty confident I know what to study to pass now that I've seen the test.

I'm pretty sure the current Cisco rule is that you can basically retake any Pearson Vue administered exam 7 days after failing. Thankfully. Not sure how much of this will stick a month from now...

I've also heard it was quite hard. I know configuring certain Cisco enterprise routers is! Still, sounds like you're doing great!

Yeah...considering I was in a completely different line of (non-technical) work before the 3/11 earthquake, I'm pretty happy with the speed I'm getting up to speed at. I hope I can keep it up.

  21. I'm all for a good "Golden Years" of Kotaku kind of site rising to popularity...so if the right people leave the right places and make the right site with the right... you get the point. Not sure who those right people would be, but basically, I get my news from real-life friends and you guys, and I don't feel like I'm missing out by not visiting a gaming page regularly. (That said, the last 8 months of my life have been crazy, busy and crazy-busy. Maybe in a year or two if things are calm, I'll want a few more sites to visit regularly.)
  22. It was assigned to be based on a permutation of three pieces of information about me. It's also unique, in that I'd never seen anyone else use it before I started using it (although, sure enough, there are a few "peteer01" accounts I've seen that are not me today...) so when I started making account names after the first time I realized that a famous fictional character's name just might have been used by another human on the internet, I decided to start using peteer01 for everything. It works pretty well. :-)
  23. Rusty Hearts and Killing Floor. Both fun mindless breaks from studying that don't take too long and play just fine on my laptop. Friend's 8800 graphics card showed up today, so I should be able to install Steam and start downloading games to my gaming PC. Here's hoping I pass my test this afternoon so I can look forward to gaming on my gaming PC!
  24. You better not have! There's a reason I didn't make that a spoiler! Also, just in case anyone comes in here expecting to talk about Steam Trading, I'm totally cool with giving my -50% Rockstar, -25% Activision, -50% HardReset or -50% Valve coupon to anyone who can them to good use. (I won't even judge you if you buy a game I dislike with it. Or, I won't verbalize my judgment...how about that?)
