  1. Pretty damn solid. Decent amount of graphical options, locked 60fps (except for pre-rendered cutscenes, which are 30fps) and arbitrary resolutions support. Apparently some AMD users are having performance issues but I haven't experienced anything like that on Nvidia.
  2. Bayonetta. Arguably still the best character action game ever made. Holy shit, is this game good! Harder than I remembered, too. Except for the boss fights, which is the complete opposite of what I remembered. I beat the final boss on like my second try last night and I'm pretty sure I had a lot of trouble with him years ago. Gonna jump right into hard mode and go for 100% achievements completion right away, I think. Right now I just want more. But man, replaying this has really made me want a new game in this style. Hopefully Kamiya can get to work on a multiplatform title now that ScaleBound has been shitcanned. If not, there's still hope that 2017 will be the year Capcom surprise us with a Devil May Cry 5 announcement, I suppose...
  3. This has pretty much become me and my buddy's official drinking anthem, we inevitably listen to it once we're a few beers in. It is so damn good.
  4. Did you If so, yeah, that's the "bad" ending. But from what I've heard it's not linked to collectibles or completion. It's a bit more... Dark Souls-y than that. When I get around to it, I'll probably just look up a guide, to be honest. Should probably do that soon, actually. I was in a rush to move on to Nier: Automata when I finished it but I have plenty of time now.
  5. I never doubted you, SEGA. Now please don't take another 2 fucking years for the next one. Which, btw, should totally be Vanquish!
  6. The Swapper. Didn't want to start anything too long in case Bayonetta shows up on Steam tomorrow, so I finally got around to playing this. Don't know what took me so long because it's right up my alley. Sci-fi puzzle game with creepy philosophical implications? Yes, please. It has a pretty unique visual style, too. All the assets were hand-made with clay before being digitized, which is kinda neat. For some reason, I always associated it with The Fall but they're not really all that similar except for their dark sci-fi themes. The Fall has more of an adventure game vibe to it while this is more of a straight forward "puzzle rooms" kinda deal. Anyway, yeah, fun game.
  7. Total War: Warhammer. I have united the Dwarfs and successfully repelled the Chaos invasion. The Old World is now safe. Until I go back and do a Greenskins campaign, that is. Then all will be crushed by the might of my WAAAGH! Needless to say, I really enjoyed this one. My only experience with Total War was a single Shogun 2 campaign like 5 years ago, so I was pretty much a complete noob going into this one. I've also been having trouble getting into 4X games lately, I tried both Endless Space and Civ: Beyond Earth last year and neither really clicked. I think I just don't have the patience anymore for the learning phase and botched starts that inevitably come with these games. I anticipated it this time, though, and made sure to watch some tutorials and let's plays beforehand. I also played on easy because I'm a terrible person. I'll bump it up to normal next time. Also, turns out the fantasy Warhammer setting is pretty damn cool. Not as cool as 40K but that's true of most things. But I'm actually really looking forward to the sequel/expansion now. I want me some of those Lizardmen and Skavens so bad. The downside to that is that, while I enjoyed the game mechanically, I have little interest in regular historical Total War now. I mean, Feudal Japan is cool but it just doesn't compare to rat people, dinosaur Aztecs and undead Egyptians. It's a shame about the DLC pricing, though. I'd like to grab most of it right away but it's so fucking expensive that I have to wait for a sale. Except for Chaos, totally buying Chaos ASAP.
  8. Oh, is it better than the first season? If so, I really need to get on that. First season was amazing.
  9. Trails of Cold Steel coming to PC, baby! We did it, Mal!

On an unrelated note, does anybody want to buy a barely used Vita???

Yeah, it's not entirely clear. Unless XSEED went on a hiring spree, they don't have the in-house programming staff for a port job. And Sara's already said she's not involved. Either that or they meant "without Falcom handling the dev side of things", which could just mean they outsourced it like LKS. Hopefully to a different team...

But you're right, this is most definitely in response to losing both Ys VIII and Tokyo Xanadu. It's clear that Falcom now demands or at least prioritizes a PC release. I'm really glad to see XSEED taking care of it themselves. It means that:

      1) They're probably not at risk of losing the Trails series

      2) Trails of Cold Steel III is incredibly likely to also get a PC release

    3. Mal

      Mal

While the porting team could've done better on LKS, the backend was kind of a mess per Durante. If they outsource ToCS then I wouldn't be surprised if XSEED hire Durante as a consultant again. The porting company got three games they can do. With Durante as consultant/QA, by ToCS III they should know the in and outs of the engine Falcom uses.

Then (or before) onward to Zero and Ao. Trails series will be complete and up to date. MADNESS.

Yeah but if Durante could get it into a much improved state all by himself then I dunno, seems like they might not have been the most qualified porting house to begin with. They were a Japanese team, so chances are they weren't entirely familiar with what is expected of a solid PC version. Combine that with all the stories you hear about Japanese industry folks being very unreceptive to advice and criticism from the West and you have a potential recipe for disaster.

But yeah, it's crazy to think that not only are Zero and Ao the only missing entries but now they'll also all be available on PC. Now we just need XSEED to make a Celceta port happen once they're done with Cold Steel 1 and 2.

  10. I wonder where it's going to fit, I'm a little confused by all the versions of GitS. There's a lot of overlap with TV story arcs being condensed into movies and movies being chopped up into episodes and whatnot. When you need to go on wikipedia to figure out what you should watch and what you should skip, you know there's a problem. It's basically the anime equivalent of a Ubisoft Collector's Edition... Anyway, re:Stand Alone Complex. I somehow only got around to watching the entire first season last Fall. For a show made 15 years ago, it holds up incredibly well visually. If I didn't know how old it actually is and you told me it was made 5 years ago I'd probably believe you. I was planning on watching 2nd GIG and Psycho-Pass after but ended up starting Code Geass instead. Then I lost interest like 5 episodes into that and haven't watched any anime since. It probably didn't help that I had just made myself suffer through 10 episodes of Durarara before finally giving up on it. I probably should've dropped it way earlier than that...
  11. The worst part about the Berserk CG is that from what I've seen they've actually fixed at least some of it for the bluray release. The hand drawn version looks so much better it's not even funny. I mean, fuck that shit, I'll resub to Crunchyroll but I'm torrenting that bluray version.
  12. So, I guess the second season of Berserk is starting tomorrow? I still haven't watched the first one... But between this, Attack on Titan season 2 FINALLY starting and Crunchyroll finally having My Hero Academia, the temptation to reactivate my premium sub is growing. Oh and while I'm here, any news about Vento Aureo? I need JoJo to be back in my life.
  13. They (Nordic) keep saying they want to make the third game but after the second one completely failed to follow up the first one's amazing cliffhanger, I sorta lost interest. Then THQ went under and Vigil Games shut down... I do plan on playing the remasters eventually since I got them for free and they're still good games but I'm not holding my breath for the continuation of the series. Especially since it seems I'm in the minority in not wanting a fucking 4-player coop game out of this series. Like, I can't imagine a worst possible scenario for an hypothetical Darksiders 3 or 4...
  14. @Mr. GOH! Act IV just came out last summer, I would expect Act V to release around 2020. It sucks beacuse I really want to play it (and already own it) but I still can't decide whether I want to wait for the final act or not. I'll have probably forgotten everything by the time it comes out, so... :/
  15. New video from Noclip, the guys that made that DOOM documentary a few months ago. This time it's about The Witness and Jon Blow. Spoiler warning, if you have any interest in playing The Witness and still haven't done so, the video talks about the one thing I'd say qualifies as a major spoiler. I'm not done watching it yet but it's pretty interesting so far. One of the core ideas in the game is something he actually came up with before even making Braid and it was in a bit of a different form, so it's pretty cool to get some insight into how it became the game we played last year.
  16. I think that qualifies as bullying. Also, I just reported your post.
  17. My overall favorite channel has to be RedLetterMedia. They're mostly known for the 70mins review of The Phantom Menace from a few years back but they have a pretty strong line-up of shows these days. Half in the Bag is where they review new releases. Best of the Worst has them watching 3 bad movies and have a panel discussion about them. It's by far their best and most entertaining show. They often mix things up by having guests or gimmick episodes, too. And last year they started re:View, which is just a way for them to talk about whatever movie they feel like talking about. Sometimes it's a classic or favorite of theirs, other times it's something terrible, basically anything that doesn't fit into the other two shows. They also have a game-centric series/channel called Previously Recorded but I'm honestly not a huge fan of it. As for gaming themed channels, these would be the best ones I watch: Super Bunnyhop: This is probably my favorite gaming channel. He mainly does your typical reviews of new releases but also does the occasional video essay and semi-journalistic content. He was the first one to provide some insight into the whole Kojima/Konami situation, IIRC. He's also a pretty good reviewer. Even when I disagree with him, he still tends to argue his points well enough that you can always see where he's coming from. Matthewmatosis: Also mainly a review channel but he rarely does new releases and mostly focuses on gameplay mechanics. He's done long form series reviews of all the 3D Mario and Zelda games as well as the Metal Gear Solid series. Pretty good stuff. Errant Signal: This is more of a "literary criticism" kinda deal and tends to focus on lesser known indies and artsy fartsy stuff. He's more interested in exploring what a game is saying through its mechanics and systems rather than how good or bad they are. Game Maker's Toolkit: Another analysis channel but this one is strictly about game design. He's recently been looking at the dungeon design of all the Zelda games in the lead-up to Breath of the Wild's release but he also touches on a little of everything and not just level design. Noah Caldwell-Gervais: This guy also does long form analysis, usually comparing multiple games or going through an entire series. His production value is godawful but his commentary is usually on point. He's also recently started living out of his van and traveling, so he started doing some travel videos as well. It's not the kind of stuff I would've expected to be into but I've been enjoying them so far.
  18. Wasn't that supposed to be out in early 2017? The complete silence made me assume it was quietly cancelled.
  19. Styx: Shards of Darkness. The short version is that it's about as good as the first one, which is very. It doesn't improve on the formula as much as I'd hoped but there are a few refinements here and there and some neat additions to the items and abilities at your disposal. I do have a few minor nitpicks, though. For one, the levels are shorter by about 50%. In the original, each level was made up of 4 zones but here it's almost always 2 (with one or two that had a third boss zone). There are more missions, though, so it's still a bit shorter than the original but ultimately not by a whole lot. The actual maps are as great as ever, though. The excellent level design of the first game is still present and, while I don't think the maps are particularly bigger than in the first game, they felt more packed and detailed. The switch to UE4 means the game is also a bit prettier than the first one, which is always nice. Another thing worth mentioning is that the levels weren't as thematically interesting as in the first game. The original was set in this large structure that was designed by a Da Vinci-like crazy architect, so it was full of neat things like secret passages, hidden laboratories, crazy libraries with maps hidden in them, etc. The sequel has a few cool areas but is overall set in more normal locations, which is fine but the surprisingly cool setting was one of the things that made me love the original so much. Also, the fact that it takes place in a few different areas makes the map reuse stick out a bit more this time around, especially given the shorter missions. But by far the single biggest issue with Shards of Darkness is the writing. The actual story is fine and ended up being a fairly interesting way to follow up the ending of the first game. No, the problem is that I guess there was a gas leak at Cyanide's offices or something because the game is full of "jokes" and, well, I'll let them speak for themselves. It's just the most cringe worthy type of pop culture references and 4th wall breaks. There's also some Joker-like game over screens but those didn't bother me anywhere near as much since I tend to just hit start and manually reload my last save before they get to play. There's like two jokes in the entire game that made me laugh. It's easy to ignore but just kinda makes you wonder wtf they were thinking. On the positive side, this one has full cutscenes, which is a nice upgrade from the original's more concept art-ish presentation. Anyway, I actually finished it a couple days ago and I've since pretty much wrapped everything else up. So, yeah... Back to being starved for good stealth games. Hopefully they end up making at least one more, especially given that non-ending...
  20. Well, that explains the downtime. Looks pretty nice, especially love the improved status updates!

Ah, ok. Yeah, I saw those. So this update was meant to go live for a while then?

Also, I got a pop-up and sound notifications when you replied to this and it startled me. AND I JUST NOTICED WE CAN LIKE REPLIES TO STATUS UPDATES NOW! What a time to be alive!

You can pretty much do statuses as a full blown post now. Formatting, links, throw in a video if you want. But yeah now you can get the fancy HTML5 notifications too (like with Gmail, Facebook etc). And liking, which was a feature back in Version 2 iirc.

As for the update, Version 4 came out many moons ago but initial launch it missed a lot of features (e.g statuses on the homepage) as well as minimal add-ons supported. It's since matured and the old version buggering up for me sorta forced my hand. I'd say it's worked out for the best (the old Version 3 was actually dropping support tomorrow too so eek).

I've still tweaks to make, and a couple of the add-ons to replace but I've a weekend ahead of me.

LOL. Finally, we can have full blown serious discussions on the status updates without being hampered by the forum.

  21. Do you mean the black outline around the characters? If so, that's apparently an option they introduced in one of their Baldur's Gate releases. Something about making the sprites pop out more against the higher resolution backgrounds. Sounds like you can turn it off if you don't like it.
  22. From what I understand, Valve recently made changes so that reviews that come from family sharing, free keys and (I think) keys bought from outside of Steam don't count towards the score. Which means that even if the backers denied refunds (which, as dean pointed out, they are not entitled to) all gave negative reviews, they still wouldn't affect the game's overall score. Honestly, this is just a vocal bunch of shitty people being shitty people. It'll blow over and, if Yooka-Laylee turns out to be a quality game, I think it'll do fine in the long run.
  23. To be fair, what JonTron said was completely fucking stupid and ignorant at best. He most certainly has some very problematic and racist views. Like, take the similar controversy that happened with PewDiePie a few weeks ago. I can't really stand the kind of content he makes but he seems like a fairly decent dude and I don't buy for a second that he's a "nazi" or whatever. I've seen the video that sparked the controversy and to me it seemed obvious that it was just edgy humor. I think the worst you can realistically accuse him of is showing very poor judgement in making that joke (it was) but I feel like the entire thing was taken out of context and blown way out of proportion. But when JonTron literally says "rich black people commit more crimes than poor white people", I mean... come the fuck on. There is no context where that is not an insanely racist thing to say. His views on immigration are also crazy hypocritical considering he himself is the son of immigrants. I agree with you that the internet is starting to get pretty crazy about this stuff lately and labels like "literal nazi" are thrown around way too fucking quickly but, unlike PewDiePie, I don't think the reaction to JonTron's comments is blown out of proportion or even remotely unfair. He said some pretty vile stuff and when you make a living as a public figure there are consequences for voicing such problematic views. At the end of the day, any damage to his brand was of his own doing. I'm curious about the part where you mention Playtonic people shit-talking those asking for refunds, though. Do you have a link for that or something? I haven't heard anything about that.
  24. Considering this thread is only on its second page after all this time, I guess it's not really worth creating a new one for this but About time Beamdog got around to doing that one. I'm still a little confused as to why they bothered doing Icewind Dale first, tbh. Didn't have much interest in the Baldur's Gate ones personally but I'll probably grab this one. Played a fair bit of the GOG version a few years back and it was great but I never finished it, so this is the perfect excuse to give it another shot. Not having to fuck around with mods to get it to display properly at a non-primitive resolution is also going to be nice. Plus, they even have Chris Avellone overseeing some elements of it.
