  1. A few more tabletop games for the shelf (curse you, Johnny): $37 $20 $2 (thrift)
  2. It wasn't as good as the first season. It was very good still, but that first season may never be matched for the rest of the series. Also, it did cover the entire second book (even encroached on book 3 territory a little bit; the final scene is the prologue of A Storm of Swords). The third season will not cover all of the third book though.
  3. Welp, Breaking Bad S3E7 "One Minute" is on par with the best television I've seen.

Yeah, you shouldn't watch it for a single episode. You should watch it because it's an incredible show.

Can't remember which one that is. Half measure is good. S04 seems great, the most consistent so far. Apparently the first half of S05 is incredible.

  4. Season 4 is on Netflix starting Sunday. I am on S3E6.
  5. Clear the board! Also, aren't there some perms with "cannot be exiled" text? I'm sure there have been, though I don't know if they're currently active.
  6. I'm going to go ahead and change this thread to "Criticism of forum user 'eleven'". Thanks for your cooperation.
  7. I'd like this to be more general TV discussion, so I'll go ahead and change the thread name.
  8. I do not know about the special editions or anything. As for DOTP itself, I'm not much of a fan. I know several people on this forum who enjoy it, however. My main problem with the game is that the flow and pacing from the card game are completely out of whack. I'm either waiting around for stuff to happen that happens immediately IRL, or I'm being rushed to stop a timer or play a card. I also have trouble identifying cards by sight and keeping track of what active abilities and effects cards in play have. I much prefer MTGO and the old Microprose DOTP. Edit: that being said, it's probably worth the $10 or whatever it will be on sale.
  9. That is a good question. I do not have time to sift through the data right at this moment, but here is the article where it was used, for anyone interested: http://www.cato.org/publications/congressional-testimony/impact-federal-involvement-americas-classrooms
  10. No offense taken or intended. Just pointing out that in some areas, we are far more socialist than it can appear from the outside. The left vs. right dichotomy is essentially "less socialist" vs. "more socialist", at least with the major parties' platforms (ie, no one would dare suggest we eliminate Social Security or Medicare).
  11. Also where we spend 60% of the 3+ trillion dollar annual budget on providing assistance to the poor, elderly, and disabled. As for education, our country's academic performance has been abysmal for a long time. Bush's "No Child Left Behind" initiative was a monstrosity, and it's only gotten worse. We keep pouring more and more money into the problem, but it's clear that that's not the solution: Smaller countries with more homogeneous populations tend to see much better results with their education programs' spending. I just don't think a centralized bureaucracy dictating standards will work for a country as large and diverse as ours; it certainly hasn't so far. As for college aid, the federal student loan bubble is the next one to burst. Rampant lending and thoughtless borrowing are going to lead to some massive blowback when everyone starts defaulting. Sooner or later people are going to come to terms with the fact that they're not getting the $160,000/year engineering jobs they thought they were when they borrowed $60,000/year for college. The problem is people do not look at education as they would any other purchase, by evaluating the benefits weighed against the costs. They just go because they "should", regardless of its value in their particular situations. Other means of assistance, as was mentioned before, include grants and scholarships from the state or the schools themselves. Full rides are not uncommon due to academic performance or sports. Still it's troublesome to me just how much student debt is out there, over $1 trillion by most counts.
  12. WOTC board game for $2 at the thrift shop. Plays like Monopoly with combat.
  13. Bought Warcraft III for $2 at the thrift shop. Unfortunately it was missing, you know, the game.

I will have to see if it's in there. If so hopefully it hasn't been used.

  14. While I agree with your points, Dean, the adapters/cables for phones can be just a few dollars online, depending on the phone. I haven't looked at what Samsung does with theirs.
  15. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1820893788/katalyka/posts/239764 Girl takes $7,000 in Kickstarter funds for a board game and has what appears to be some sort of mental breakdown a year later. Though her most recent update indicates that she's overcome whatever problems "the sun" had been giving her.
  16. Well, I've run through a few sample & tutorial matches and played a very slow half-game with the wife. She didn't care much for it, but I liked it quite a bit. It is definitely challenging to wrap my head around a new CCG as the card balance is completely foreign to me. Most of the sample decks are two-thirds characters and there are no resource cards to speak of (most plots and some locations will generate gold each turn, denoted by cardboard tokens). So whereas with MTG you may have a manageable hand of 2 characters, a few lands, and some effects, AGOT LCG is a little tougher because you very well could have 9-12 separate characters, locations, events, and attachments in your hand on turn 1. But I really look forward to getting some more "hardcore" gaming guys together for a few rounds, as the 4-player diplomacy aspects are intriguing. In the meantime I will probably target Ghost Stories, Castle Panic, or Last Night on Earth for my next board game purchase.

  18. Yeah, I really like it but just haven't had a lot of time to dedicate to it. I just beat the Lanayru Mining Facility, but I don't know where that puts me in the game.
  19. Finished Bastion, moving on to Skyward Sword.
  20. Should be great, a lot of good picks this year.
  21. I finally saw the Avengers, the latest showing on the last day it was playing near us. It was every bit as good as people made it out to be, with the only real weaknesses being the straightforward plot and a few very minor things.
  22. I was contemplating just acquiring the PDFs until they release a reasonably priced compilation. I don't usually like to do that though.
