  1. http://www.philly.com/philly/news/breaking/116241209.html?c=r Unbelievable. Attacks her with a claw hammer, tries to "cremate her" in the oven, and then finally kills her with a chair leg before hiding her corpse and reporting her missing. He goes on to say, "she was the only person who cared for me." Would capital punishment really be a bad idea here?
  2. Yikes. This is bad enough to belong on Fail Blog. I'm actually tempted to put it up there. Hahaha. Yes.
  3. Two games I never got around to playing last year are on loan from a friend: Alan Wake and Batman: AA. Which should I play first, and why?

DLC for Batman was just challenge (combat and stealth) rooms. I really liked the combat system, but I didn't see any point in buying more challenges.

    3. WTF

      WTF

Batman DLC was just challenges as the guys mentioned above. There were costumes and a few other stuff like crime alley which were free in the GOTY edition. Plus it's a game you playing in 3D with the old fashioned anaglyph 3D glasses instead of Stereoscopic 3D.

Go with Alan Wake first so that Batman will be fresh in your head for the upcoming sequel. Bet it makes it on your day 1 list.

  4. I voted him as my favorite just because of that. Then again, I visited yesterday night just to see if they included that as the PA comic this week. I was initially torn between Tim R and Brian B as my least favorite, but then realized it was definitely Tim R by a big margin. The other votes did not surprise me in that category.
  5. I don't really care as long as it's the YYYY format. Going to Costco in Japan and seeing DDMMYY, YYMMDD, MMDDYY and maybe even a few other permutations in there is frustrating as hell when you're not sure if food that's good until 101112 is expired, expiring this year or good until next year. At least from 2013, there'll be less possibilities that lead to confusion.
  6. Oh man, Star Control II was an awesome game, and I loved playing Super Melee with friends. Not sure why it's reminding me of it, but Guardian Heroes versus mode was another great game to play with friends. :-)
  7. Looking forward to being able to give Razer my money for an Onza controller, whenever they finally decide to get around to making the Onza available for sale in Japan. (Don't care if I have to buy it from the US, AP, Japan or some other Razer online store, or Amazon...I just need one of them to have it available for purchase and allow shipping to Japan...)

I just hope the D-pad is actually good, because that's the only thing I really dislike about my 360 Wired.

I'll be buying one when it comes out.

  9. Yes, I am talking about next generation consoles, and yes, I know they aren't even announced yet. Look at Fallout New Vegas. How much of a change and improvement is it over Fallout 3? If the game is designed to run on the PS3 and 360, it's going to be designed with the same basic hardware constraints that Oblivion was. The state of the gaming market means there's no way you'll see Bethesda design this game for modern PCs, and then later find a way to get it on the 360/PS3 (as does happen with the Wii). How cool would a bustling downtown area of a city be? You kind of had this in Assassin's Creed II, but what if you didn't have to worry about hardware constraints when figuring out how many NPCs could be in a given area? (Oblivion towns always felt underpopulated to me. Maybe that was because of the lack of any children anywhere.) What if you didn't have to worry about the limit of the PS3's 256MB for textures? I understand that time constraints, money constraints and limited man-hours mean that we're not going to magically have towns with detailed and diverse buildings of various architectural designs and textures as soon as the additional system resources are available, but for whatever diversity or volume of textures, NPCs or other details that get dropped because of limited system resources on the consoles, yeah, that makes me wish it was being developed for a system with less hardware constraints. I would like the next as few constraints as possible in it's development, because I'm looking forward to something that's hopefully more impressive than Oblivion, if possible. Please take a look at what I wrote above. The PS3 has 256MB for VRAM. Developers have been saying that's one of the biggest challenges in developing for the PS3 for a while now. It's why the PS3 ends up with lower quality textures in many multiplatform games. Please take off any rose colored lenses you might be wearing and realize that both the PS3 and 360 are pretty old systems, and that the vast majority of people reading this site are using a computer that was made after those two consoles both came out. The memory in the PS3 is maxed out all the time, and in multi-platform games it often leads to screenshots showing lower quality textures compared to 360 games. I don't care if you're talking about 512MB of shared RAM, or 256MB and 256MB of RAM and VRAM...the difference between the 360 and PS3 is so small that it shouldn't matter to anyone who just wants to play and enjoy games (assuming the ports are both competent) but the difference between those two systems and what a gaming PC today is capable of is pretty darn big at this point. This post was initially made before I was awake and had many grammatical errors and poor wording that made it hard to read, so I corrected the major ones and deleted the original post. If this post seems strangely familiar, that's why.

  11. I'm sure the game itself will be great...but I really wish this game was being made for next gen consoles. Even if the PC version is going to be graphically superior, it'll still be the same basic game that was designed around the constraints of this generation's hardware. I know Move and Kinect are supposed to magically make us stop realizing that console games would benefit from more memory, better transfer speeds and all the other benefits a console made today would have...but for a game like this, I really feel like the current console hardware will hold back what the game world has to offer.
  12. Since the vast majority of great stories at Kotaku are not from Kotaku, I'd love to see the links to the few great news stories, truly amazing flickr/deviantart images and what not here, and comment on them here. As it is, I'm checking Kotaku a lot less, and adding some links to the ca.kotaku redirect trick CyberToyger at TAY recommending that people check out the rest of this site while they're here, if they have some time. We'll see what happens, but honestly, the commenting was what made Kotaku great, and there were problems there before the change when comments became less important that photoshop contests for awarding stars. (WIC disappeared, and it also seemed like trollpatrol was widely ignored unless someone was impersonating or attacking Kotaku staff... ) My work day will be more productive if I stop visiting so much, and while the new system will keep my visit few and far between, honestly speaking, I doubt I'll visit as much even if they revert to the old system.
  13. I guess that nowadays it's okay to say they aren't amazing...but I was vocalizing that idea back when they came out, and it was like I was trying to tell people the emperor had no clothes. People would direct me to gamerankings or metacritic tell me how it's the Xth best rated game of all time, or the ___ selling game of all time, and it was such a technological step forward from the game maker's previous game in the series I just couldn't realize that it was an improvement because I hate innovation... I'm glad to hear people today suggest that both were pretty controversial...but it sure as hell didn't feel that way when I was vocalizing my dissatisfaction with the games back when they came out. Man, I'm not afraid to tell people what I like, and I loved WaW when it came out (my 10/10 review is still over at GameFAQs) and I love Black Ops. Both games are great. So is COD4, but very few people will rebut you when you say that.
  14. Chose video games over sleep tonight. When my son is jumping on my head tomorrow morning, I'll likely regret that decision.

  15. What really surprised me is that Week In Comments, a chance to show off the kind of comments that had people like me visiting regularly, disappeared. But instead of a few good commenters getting starred from WIC, they started starring people who were in the final 20 or so in the weekly photoshop contests... I don't get that. Clearly some of the photoshop winners have great ideas...but that doesn't mean it's the best way to identify the people who ... you know what, I'm going to stop there. Not worth any more rant.
  16. GTA4 and COD:MW2... I laid out the reasons already here: http://board.pressxordie.com/topic/691-least-favorite-game-of-all-time/page__st__40
  17. Hmmm... Need to find lemon pepper...somewhere near Kawasaki. That's the quest for tomorrow morning. The reward is a delicious lunch if successful.

  18. When it comes to PvP experiences for my friends in and around Tokyo...there hasn't been a better option yet. I understand people may not care for the single player campaigns, and that not everyone's going to be a fan of the multiplayer experience, but as a group game, there's very little on consoles that can hold a candle to it for people like me who are in Japan or other countries with relatively small install bases that need a locale only search option and reasonable install base for a game to stay playable for more than a month or two. Borderlands is a great example of a co-op game that worked. (L4D/L4D2 and the like could also be in here.) SSFIV is a great example of a 1v1 game that worked. But for multiplayer PvP, there's really not much within shouting distance. BFBC2, MNC and a few other games have been fun for a short while, but with the exception of Halo games, I can't think of anything else that has the local only search option and gameplay and overseas success that would stay playable with my friends. And I do prefer COD's gameplay over Halo.
  19. Agreed. While they're focused on maximizing shareholder profits in the short term, it would be nice for them to realize that a franchise like COD could very well be a Mario or Zelda for FPSers if they take care of it. I'd rather see them release a Black Ops GOTY edition (with all the map packs) next November, and release a great COD game in 2012...but driving COD into the ground for maximum profits in FY11 seems to be more important than the log term health of the brand.
  20. So many... For 360 the main ones would be the hack-n-slash games I've bought: Dante's Inferno Conan Oneechanbara vorteX I beat and enjoyed them all...maybe I'm not picky? Also, I loved World at War. I loved co-op single player, zombies and the multiplayer...and some COD4 fanatics would lead you to believe that saying that was a great COD game makes me a heretic.
  21. I see this so much and just don't get it. The games aren't that dissimilar to have such a bipolar assessment. http://board.pressxordie.com/topic/691-least-favorite-game-of-all-time/page__st__40 If you actually care, you can read the above. If you still care after that, you can read the below: Would you say that GTAIII and GTAIV are too similar to have that bipolar assessment? I feel the same way about those two.
  22. I'm cool with visiting Kotaku as long as CyberToyger's old Kotaku URL redirect method works: http://board.pressxordie.com/topic/752-the-old-kotaku/ I'm definitely reading and commenting less, but as long as the old format option is there I will be happy to visit occasionally with that...but it seems like commenting is already less meaningful, since most people are being subjected to the new format.
  23. This post deserves as many green plus clicks as it can get.
  24. I think I'd like for them to stick with Black Ops for more than just a year. Extra demand and extra time might just lead to a worthwhile game hitting the shelves in 2012. I really, really like Black Ops. I really, really hated MW2. I find it tough to believe that IW, with or without help, will put out something similar to COD4, WaW or Blops. I find it easy to imagine something similar to MW2. So yeah, I think that any news that might suggest there's even a reason Activision would push back the next COD game into 2012 would be good for my gaming before the game comes out and good for my gaming after the game comes out...but unfortunately, they're still talking about a fall release, so it seems likely that they'll sell us a garbage game based on the franchise's reputation and fan base. Pretty sure I won't be buying at launch.
