  1. Maybe you don't remember, New Guy...but there was this guy, Manly McBeeferton...
  2. http://nohighscores.com/node/61 Looks like someone already posted a Kotaku link above, but NHS was where I read about the film options. This is good news for Dead Island's marketing team, and good news for the whole development team, as this will almost certainly increase sales, but does the acquisition of film rights, or the additional mind share this game is getting translate into a larger team or budget for this game? I'm hoping this game is good...co-op, creative trailer, open world zombie game...it sounds like it could be great...but for as little as we know and as much hype as the trailer seems to have gotten, there could be a lot of disappointed people when this game comes out.
  3. Ohh, nice catch. People always used that when criticizing Kotaku for non-gaming stories. Now they can't use that - clever move, Kotaku, clever move. It's probably for the best. Between the shift away from commentors and comments, the redesign and some of the articles tenuous (at best)ties to gaming, seems like they have an idea of where they want to go and what they want to post...and if "The Gamer's Guide" doesn't fit, it makes sense they've gotten rid of it.
  4. I knew it was coming, but I still smiled when I heard "Zed".
  5. First impressions, that site actually looks really good. I think I'll try to use that site and this site for news, and see how that works out.
  6. Hahaha. If those two photos are anything to go by, then Yes.
  7. I am having fun looking through here. Since it's not quite fair to just look and not share...I'll post a link to my most recent photo of my video game collection (with nifty flickr notes giving a mini-review of each game) on my Flickr account. For those of you who are really interested...well, there are a lot of photos there.
  8. Whoo! Our powers combined, we have ruined this thread with our seriousness. (And seriously, Rumiko Takahashi's stuff is great. Masakazu Katsura is another great who's work did the extraordinary in getting me to actually read Video Girl Ai, in it's entirety, in Japanese.)
  9. Holy crap. Finally started playing around in Wager Matches in COD:BO two nights ago. Playing Wager Matches with five other friends is a hoot!

  10. I'm afraid to be serious in this thread...it seems like I'd be ruining the general tone... But, on a serious note, Maison Ikkoku is the reason I'm here. I wanted to study abroad for a few years. I was lucky enough to qualify for Duke's TIP program, so my summers saw my parents saying, "Why don't you do TIP this summer, and we can talk about next summer next year." Duke's where I learned about fansubs, and while I was mostly interested in the violent and sexually charged anime (stuff like Ninja Scroll), I saw that Maison Ikkoku was nearly 100 episodes, was curious about that and, on a whim, I requested the first 4 on a VHS tape while I was getting two other fansubs. (You could request up to three at a time, so I always did just that.) That was the anime that first had me actually interested in Japanese culture. Onsens, pachinko, oshogatsu, ronin and entrance exams, school festivals, matsuri, etc, etc, etc... The series really is chock full of Japanese culture, without any of it being for the sake of showing people Japanese culture or appealing to people outside Japan. It just happens to take place in Japan...but that just made all of the cultural differences that much more incredible. Maison Ikkoku had me genuinely interested in coming to Japan and finding out more. A few years later, I was on my way over for a year long exchange program, that would see me return three years later for a semester of college and three years after that for work. Eight years later, I have my own business, a mortgage, an amazing wife and two kids...all here in Japan. So, uh, yeah, I really liked Maison Ikkoku, and to say it profoundly impacted myself would be an understatement. I remember getting my wife to read it when we were dating and she was sick.
  11. Off to Costco. It's amazing how comforting places like CPK, Costco and IKEA can be when you live in a foriegn country. :-)

    1. Mal

      Mal

Right at the front door will be the TVs and glasses section. Then some other electronics and appliances. Coming next is the bake goods then meats. Then veggies and cleaning stuff. Then froozen then dry goods and stuff. Lastly medicine and such. In the middle clothing, books, DVD and other crap.

Ah yes, you can read the stores like a book.

And the fact that Costco pretty much smells like Costco no matter which Costco, in any part of the world, you're visiting. In my wife's words, "It smells like America in here."

Much like the Mother Church, it's because they are countries in and of themselves. America smells like Costco, not the other way 'round.

  12. I was looking for this thread in the multi-platform folder. I was of the impression that Diablo III was going to be multiplat already, but I might have just lumped it in with Dungeon Siege III, which is definitely confirmed for PC/PS3/360. I know there's at least one or two more other Diablo/DS type games either recently released or definitely announced for consoles, and something with good online co-op would be a welcome addition to my gaming library.
  13. Great news! Sounds like a sequel is likely after all.
  14. Firefox. Downloaded Chrome, didn't see any reasons for me to switch, and set Chrome's default language to Japanese, with Firefox's default language set to English. I use Firefox for basically everything, but occasionally use Chrome. (Examples are when a page isn't working right, and I want to make sure it's the page and not the browser, or if I want to check my Flickr account to make sure everything that's shared publicly should be.) Part of the reason I like Firefox is that I also use Thunderbird for my work e-mail. (They're both made by Mozilla.)
  15. Oh, the irony. The story at that link includes the following text: I had never seen that before tonight. When I saw the Kirby cloud, I laughed out loud. Edit: Seriously, I went back, looked at it again, laughed again, thought about making it my avatar here, and then laughed again. I'm not sure why it's tickling my funny bone as much as it is, but waving Kirby cloud is an excellent piece of satire.
  16. If you haven't already, you should watch the Extra Credits episode on Amnesia and Story Structure: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/extra-credits/2681-Amnesia-and-Story-Structure Like most things on this list, I don't mind it if it's done well.
  17. Just read through the whole thing, and since my complaints have already been written by others, I figured I'd just quote the minimum necessary to list my pet peeves: You must despise Dead Rising. I did have fun in Dead Rising, but those two points, combined with the save system, were why I eventually lost interest in Dead Rising.
  18. "SteamPlay support has been announced. If you buy Portal 2 for the Playstation 3, you can link your PSN account with your Steam account. This will grant you access to the PC and Mac versions of the game at no additional cost" Some people have emailed Valve asking if what you're saying is possible, but so far it seems like you'll end up with 2 copies for yourself, which kinda doesn't make sense IMO. It does make sense. Instead of wondering if I should buy a game for a console or PC, I could just "buy the game". (Letting people give away a copy of the game is where it wouldn't make sense to me.) I'm already considering buying a gaming PC for single player games later this year or next year if I don't hear of any new consoles coming out in the next few years, and if I had a few games that were ready and waiting for a new PC, I'd be that much more likely to buy the gaming PC, which, in turn, makes me that much more likely to buy more PC games. (The whole thing reminds me of including download codes for Blu-ray/DVD movies. The idea is that it doesn't cost them anything to provide you with an additional way to enjoy the content/game, but if you're even a little bit more likely to make the purchase as a result, it makes sense to offer that option. )
  19. Agreed. That was basically my point. Whether you think locking this kid in a mental institution or a correctional facility is the best course of action, or if you believe that capital punishment is the best course of action, the is damage done and no course of action "solves" it. Whether you come from a culture and upbringing that views life in prison as cruel and unusual and worse than capital punishment, or if you believe the reverse, that capital punishment is worse than life in prison, trumpeting that one of those "doesn't solve anything" is only meaningful if you have a solution that does. Again, there are no easy answers for what should be done with this young man, but my gallows humor was never meant to start a debate on capital punishment.
  20. One of the reasons I want to see a new console sooner rather than later. After the first year or two of figuring things out, there's usually some nice diversity and neat new titles. As for Mirror's Edge 2...I played the demo, and I was interested, but it wasn't a $60 interest. If I lived someplace where I'd see the title for $20 or so, I'd have picked it up when it was a lower price, but I was hoping that a Mirror's Edge 2, whether this year or a few years from now on a new system, would address issues like length, controls and the like. Seemed like a great idea...I hope it does eventually get a sequel.
  21. My second wired 360 controller is getting up there in hours used. I think it's time to replace it, but I'm still waiting for the Razer Onza to actually be available for sale.

  22. I am checking out the site occasionally. As for my idea of a News folder for News threads on the forum, this is an example of what I had in mind: http://board.pressxordie.com/topic/785-son-kills-mom-over-ps3-hides-moms-body-reports-mom-missing/ (That's a thread I started in Off-Topic because I didn't know where else to put it.) I'm guessing if there was a "this is how to post the link an introduction to a news article you want to talk about" guide and a folder for Gaming News, you'd probably see some good conversations there.
  23. Yes. While games may not actually desensitize us to violence, they apparently may cause us to dramatically underestimate the intelligence and diligence of real world police. (I'll change the color of my car. They'll never find me now! If that doesn't work, I'll just crouch in this shadow until they forget about me in a few seconds.)
  24. I'm not trying to argue whether or not capital punishment is a good idea or bad idea, but how would you "solve" this situation? Is there an elegant solution of what to do with this twisted young man? What would you consider the way to "solve" this? While my capital punishment comment was a bit of gallows humor (Dukakis would appreciate that one), saying that it wouldn't "solve anything" suggests that you do have a solution. I'd be interested to hear it.
  25. That's very, very good. I recommend anyone who hasn't seen it check it out.
