  1. Status updates are gone for me as well.
  2. By the by if anyone wants me to teach them a board game, I can run Carcassonne, Hive, LOTR The Card Game, and several others across the VASSAL board game engine online.
  3. I usually avoid this thread like the plague, but I'm pleased to find rational discussion on both sides. Carry on. Or I will shoot you.
  4. Can't get enough Ellie Goulding. I'm such a sissy.

  5. Still haven't played Arkham Horror, only its little brother Elder Sign. It is something I do want to try someday. You'll love Ticket to Ride; it's grand.
  6. My wife puts maple syrup in her coffee. Bizarre.
  7. I liked the first Transformers. But holy cow that second one was awful.
  8. Ah, so the game had a lot of downtime and lag. That can absolutely kill a game experience, no matter how well-designed the game is otherwise. My absolute favorite board games/tabletop games play in under an hour, preferably 30-40 minutes. I will play longer games, but hopefully there's always something for me to do and the gameplay is worth it. Glad to hear you liked the mechanics. I will have to keep an eye on that, hadn't heard of it before.
  9. Yeah, it's tough to find the right group. If I didn't have a local game shop with regular meetups, half my games would still be unplayed. And I STILL can't find anyone to play War of the Ring with me.
  10. On the actual tabletop front you might like X-Wing Miniatures. It sounds less mathy than the game you played but is still "playing with toys" tactically. Or for a all-in-one board game experience, Last Night on Earth.
  11. Interesting. For us board gamers, the transparency of the mechanics is one of the draws. I love seeing the different ways designers solve design problems. For instance, in a game of Forbidden Island, a certain number of cards from the "Flood Deck" are drawn each turn, which partially flood a tile on the island. If that same card is drawn again, the tile is removed completely. The trouble is that players would have way too much time to just grab everything they need and leave--EXCEPT the designer added 3 "Waters Rise" cards to the Treasure deck. Now, the Flood cards that have already been drawn are immediately shuffled ON TOP of the remaining flood cards--meaning tiles that are already underwater will be the very first to be drawn! That being said, I've not played that game, and certain games can be really rules-"fiddly" or too "mathy" and that can suck up some of the fun.

Protip, press space bar to interact with the closest object. Makes it very easy to run, dodge the monster's attack, attack the monster and go back to running.

  17. I beat New Super Mario Bros. on the DS and New Super Mario Bros. 2 on the 3DS. Now to get all those Star Coins...
  18. CAH is also free for print-n-play off their site. Risk Legacy is not limited to the 15 campaign plays either. The board will only change, the rules will only evolve, the factions will only gain new powers for the first 15 games. After that the rules etc. are static, but it's still a fully playable (and totally unique) copy of Risk. I will say that I'm not a huge fan of Risk's underlying mechanic (3 attack/ 2 defend dice, repeat ad nauseam), but I feel that's more a function of how darn long the game takes. ESPECIALLY when a player can be eliminated before his turn even comes up. With Legacy, games are supposed to take 45 minutes to 2 hours maximum, so I'm hopeful that the battle system is more suitable to that length. You play to 4 Victory Points, achieved in a variety of ways, rather than total global domination. I'll post some thoughts after I get my first game in, hopefully next week or the week after. I should also mention that in my board game collection, only 7 games have over 15 recorded plays--and I play a lot of board games. So $50 or so for 15 plays wouldn't be that bad of a deal (how many times do we pay $50 for a video game with a 15 hour campaign?).
  19. I love dark ales. Looks great.
  20. Risk Legacy will be here any minute. Hurry up, FedEx man.

That's why it's called Legacy. Each time you play leaves a legacy that affects subsequent times.

From reading about it you put stickers over the board, write down your own countries names, tear up the cards it comes with (which you've mentioned yourself) and there's several single use packets to open up randomly in each box. It doesn't sound like a game where you put the pieces back in the box n fold the board up.

      TheMightyEthan

But that seriously is the whole point, to play it more than once. It's just that you should be playing it more than once with the same people, not on somebody else's board. Stickers on the board from previous games give bonuses/penalties in subsequent games, cards get removed from the deck as they're destroyed, your copy of the game evolves and becomes unique over multiple play sessions.

  21. Wasn't there an edutainment "Mario Is Missing" game too?
  22. That's the only one I bought locally, so I've played it solo 3 times already. It's awesome. You have a column/formation of Marines trying to make it to a final location and accomplish an objective, usually to kill the Brood Lords. Genestealers spawn on either side of your Marines, so you have to pay attention to the direction they're facing and each Marine's range. I lost twice and beat the third game with 3 out of 6 starting Marines standing. It plays in about 30 minutes with 1-6 players and is relatively simple. Edit: here's a gameplay video:
  23. I made a big board game purchase to hopefully tide me over for most of the year (aside from my bargain/thrift store finds). Tried to get a good mix of co-op/solo games and multiplayer-focused ones. All told I spent a bit over $100.
