  1. Bit late on that, aren't you? That said, "The diary of a Gamestop employee" based on your thread would make for a fantastic article.
  2. Minus the exclusion of the second analog stick, they seemed to be doing everything right prior to the PSP release and that didn't turn out so well. Sony's greatest failing with the PSP was in marketing and developer relations. Something tells me that's where they're going to fall short with the Vita as well. I expected that. Sony like using proprietary stuff. It sucks but I'd wager most people who owned a PSP have accepted it for the most part, I know I have - though I'd rather they used SD cards.
  3. Haha! Woops! Yeah, I got Dead Island. My gut told me I should go for Space Marine but the 4 player co-op of Dead Island teased me enough to make me pick it up instead. Something tells me I'd love Space Marine - Relic and W40K?! Ah well, I made my choice and have to live with it. On that note, I stumbled across this program in my quest to raise FoV and disable blur and so on. NB: The program runs a keyboard hook that acts as a keylogger. This isn't anything suspicious but is needed to solve a problem with the game. It may be something that could bring about a VAC ban but will only run if you have the option checked and the program running in the background.
  4. And The Inbetweeners. That's a fantastic show. I'm looking forward to catching the movie when it releases to dvd/bluray.
  5. So I walk into HMV today with the aims of buying a game. I had Human Revolution in mind but that wasn't there and I was left with the choice between Dead Island and Space Marine... I wish I had read this thread first. It doesn't seem to be an awful game but it's just not a PC game. I don't like how it feels, perhaps in part because I got a reminder just recently with the great controls of Hard Reset. Why is it so hard for developers to do decent kb+m controls?
  6. alpha is alpha for a reason. BF2142 was a good game, but nowhere near the best of the series. It doesn't matter that it's Alpha, that's the way you'll join servers in the final game as well. EA/Dice want people going through the BF website. Link I also highly doubt it was the genuine alpha version. I consider 2142 to be the best in the series too.
  7. That's my biggest annoyance about the definition of sport. It's the 21st century yet so many of us still insist that athleticism is the only way to show off your prowess. I'm not asking for a switch to brains over brawn but as I said in my article, I think a more balanced society that champions both is more forward-thinking. A good example of what you're saying can be seen in TF2. Valve has collected data on their maps for a while in an attempt to keep them balanced for competitive play and give both teams a fair chance of victory. You can't always succeed since maps are more complex than the ovals and rectangles of ball pitches but it can be accomplished And therein lies the biggest hurdle. So long as the competitive scene is relatively small compared to the (seems the most appropriate term here) casual market, the majority of development focus is going to be on selling the game to casual gamers. Hot Heart does have a point. Right now, even the best suited competitive games aren't perfectly suited to e-sports but I can see that changing. In the e-sports timeline, we're just entering into the world of professionalism. I think looking back at the rise of hurling in Ireland is a good way to show how the timeline could progress. For a long time, Gealic sports were disorganised. They were all amateur matches held for the love of the games. Then the GAA were set up in 1884 in an attempt to cement the rules and organise games and their popularity has grown since then. Technically, Hurling and Gaelic are still amateur sports as the players aren't paid to compete. There's even a New York and London team that have joined the fray.
  8. I used to be like that. Contrary to what you'd think, it was being single for a long time that helped me get over it. What I found helped is thinking of the fact that in the majority of the world, there are more women than men so inevitably, there's more variations of women than men and more women similar to other women so if that's the case then the women I'm with, as much as I may love them, isn't the only woman out there that I could love. When I think of it like that, it makes me less inclined to be overly protective/clingy. I also found myself getting less and less clingy as I had more relationships.
  9. Like Johnny said, the rush for power weapons can be a smart power play - like leading with your queen in Chess (Which is recognized as a sport by the International Olympic Committee). It becomes a 'fair play' move through its risk assessment. If you're leading a game of Chess with your Queen, you're risking your most powerful piece. If you're going straight for the powerful weapons in a game like Quake or Unreal, you're creating risk in a similar way. Like you said, there's often a rush for the powerful weapons and not everyone can get the powerful weapon. That's all but gone now however from newer games as loadouts are often chosen before the match begins and where "overpowered" weapons or unbalances are removed by a mod (See: Promod for CoD4). You do have a strong point though. Right now, it's up to the community to balance the game to their needs, if they can or rely on the developers to shore up any exploits or rebalance any maps or weapons. It's one of the big hurdles that e-sports faces as it grows and without developer or publisher backing, it's going to be difficult to overcome. Why don't you think it's really a sport (or can be a sport)? Also, Nascar is generally considered to be a sport - Motorsports - Stockcar Racing. Exactly! Spectator modes are becoming more common these days and the tools on hand that broadcasters would have at their disposal along with them so things are slowly improving. Tied into that issue, I think, is the view of the general population that videogames can't be sports. With only a portion of the gaming populace interested in e-sports, it's hard to create the swell of popularity it would require to organise a full-on event. South Korea has succeeded with StarCraft for the most part, with dedicated channels and large events dedicated to competitions of the game.
  10. If you read my opinions on the matter, you'll see I am dealing with it. By not purchasing the game. Sure, nothing is likely to change but that doesn't invalidate my decision to not buy the game, just as in the case of MW2. Neither does it deny me the right to voice my opinion on the matter. Would I like it if my complaints amounted to something? Yes, of course I would, but I'm not so naive as to assume that something will happen. Maybe it's the population at large or maybe it's just with gamers but lately, as mentioned in the RPS article, there's this general opinion of "Shut the fuck up! You're not allowed to complain!". It's often hypocritical too as those same people will complain at length about something else and feel they have every right to do so. In the end, it ends up coming across more like "Shut the fuck up! You're only allowed to complain when I agree with you!" and that's just absurd. Unfortunately, It seems to me that that's what you're doing here. On a final note, talking down to someone may come across to you as a good way to make yourself out to be the bigger/better/righter man but it's just insulting and doesn't help your argument in any way. Back on topic: Excel mentioned the complaints about the colour palette of Diablo III, does anyone here getting the game still care about that? I don't recall ever caring, I actually like the new style they went with.
  11. Sorry, I don't see what I have to get over. You replied to me and I responded. Since coming here, I've noticed you're often very critical. For someone who can give it, you don't seem to be very good at taking it. I fail to see how you were talking about people complaining about MW2 in general, especially from the following: That doesn't seem very general to me. MW2 was brought up by mergedwarrior, likely in an attempt to make a point about how stupid he believes boycotts are, which I responded to, which you commented on which I replied to. For someone that seems quick to be critical, you don't seem to handle it very well. So you believe boycotts are stupid and that all they settle are personal feelings. Instead of making snide remarks about a screenshot that's worth less than piss as far as the topic at hand goes and getting uppity, why didn't you just say that? Your reasoning would make for a nice addition too. As I think of your last comment, I'm reminded of an article on RPS just the other day. It was a good article on why this vile things called complaining can actually be a good thing. You should give it a read.
  12. When I was in the habit of exercising, I used to set myself a number and countdown with three different exercises - push-ups, sit-ups and crunches. So if I set 10 as my number, I'd do 10, 10, 10 followed by 9, 9, 9 and so on. I find it the best way to do basic exercises in large number as it breaks the monotony and eases the muscles in between shifts. The countdown (rather than having a countup) acts as a carrot on a stick when you're nearing the end of the routine. You have 5 of each left, then 4, then 3, just 2 more and a quick finish! It was my old boxing coach that thought me that.
  13. I recently wrote an article about e-sports over at PXOD where I pondered their future a little bit. I'm curious about what the rest of you think however. Where do you see e-sports going in the future and what are your thoughts on e-sports themselves? Any opinions you have on the topic would be great to hear and feel free to berate my article while you're at it too! Just keep it above the belt, I'm a sensitive guy!
  14. Drake is so dreamy! Seriously though, if I was gay...What?! The man's got style! That's all I'm saying! For me it's probably Final Fantasy. Though I can't speak well of XIII, I find it hard to speak ill of any others I've played. Hell! For all it's bubblegum and pop, I really enjoyed X-2, I still believe it has one of the best ATB systems of any Final Fantasy. And V! The story may be a bit by the book but the game itself flows like a charm! Then there's Dissidia, Crisis Core. I even own and enjoyed Dirge of Cerberus.
  15. I'd hope so! 9/11 marks the day the world changed significantly. Although Americans were the most personally touched that day, there were many people of different nationalities in the WTC. But that's not all. 9/11 emboldened the terrorists and sent a wave of violence throughout the world. Once America was attacked, it was hard to choose anything other than retaliation. America is the stalwart of the west, whether we like it or not and America showing weakness or soft resolve could have caused even more problems. Basically, they could try to root the cancer out or let it fester. They chose the former and, whether the right decision or not, caused more bloodshed and strife, for many nations and nationalities. It should and will be remembered as a turning point in history. Thankfully, I believe some good is starting to come of it as civilians in countries controlled and crushed by despots are beginning to believe in the power of the people and are rising up to overthrow their outdated masters. That's just my own reading on it however so take it with a grain of salt.
  16. They're all just heading to TPB to grab a free copy! Actually, I think I'll do that now... FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU! I guess I'm buying it.
  17. And what does 20 million copies have to do with my decision? They could sell triple that. It still wouldn't make a difference to my decision to not buy or my opinion on the matter. It is a fucking Diablo III thread and the way the discussion has went has been towards a focus on the point many of us have opinions on (What a surprise!). It's not as if those of us that are saying we aren't happy or won't be buying Diablo III are just pointlessly posting shit just to keep the topic of discussion to our "complaining". We've been responding to other members replies to us and have kept it, for the most part, civil. In fact, some of us had been done with the topic, after having said our piece and discussed/debated the topic with other members until mergedwarrior decided to tell us all what we'd be doing. Then the discussion sparked up again and some good points were made by both sides of the argument. Then mergedwarrior and yourself just started posting shit making no point at all. Hell, I'm just glad that you've bothered to tell us all how you feel. You know, instead of getting all pissy because you didn't like the direction the thread was going, you could have just posted about how much you're going to enjoy Diablo III, turning the topic of discussion into something more positive about the game. You didn't however. Instead, you chose to post a pointless comment about upvoting, make a sarcastic comment about a screenshot and then go ranting at me when I alluded that a comment of more substance might be more worthwhile. I think we've made our arguments. I don't see any reason to rethread old ground. Here's the truth behind the matter, from my standpoint: I DON'T GIVE A FLYING FUCK WHAT THE CORPORATE STANDPOINT IS. I WON'T BE GETTING THE GAME. Like I said above, we gave our opinions about the game. In a thread about the game. Thank you for sharing yours with us, though it would have been nice if you had done so in a more respectful manner. Gotta hate that complaining! Only thing worse is complaining about complaining...shit, I guess that's kind of a complaint about complaining about complaining...Is that worse?
  18. If you look at the screenshot, you'll notice only 19 out of 36 people from a group with 833 members are playing MW2. That only goes to show some people that joined the Steam group (far from the majority of people that said they wouldn't buy the game) bought MW2. If I was to use your logic (that one screenshot tells the whole story) then I could say that only 2.28% of people that said they wouldn't buy MW2 did and thus come to practically the opposite conclusion as you do. That would be pointless as much as it would be absurd however as that one screenshot doesn't say all that much, despite your willingness for it to be otherwise. What's the point of bringing up the screenshot? It doesn't further any argument you've made - not that you've really made one anyway. Ho-lee shit! 833 people out of three million something are in a "fuck MW2" group! Holy shit! Yes! That screenshot and that Steam group aren't representative of the bigger picture. As I said in my previous comment: So what's the point of your jab again? I know Johnny made an argument against my own and Keyworks made one too...I'm having a hard time seeing the arguments yourself and mergedwarrior have presented though....Hmmmm.
  19. Sent a text message there while I was opening this thread and a word I used prompted me to wonder if it's used in the same way outside of Ireland: "Cheers" It's probably the word I use most often in place of thanks as it essentially means "thanks" here. Is that common outside of Ireland?
  20. It feels cheesy to say it but I remember the day like it was yesterday. During school, I heard the older kids talking intensely about something but paid it no heed. By lunchtime, they all had newspapers in their hands. That was most definitely not normal but still, I just went about my day oblivious to what had happened, the teachers said nothing but you could tell they knew and it wasn't until I was getting onto the bus to go home that I saw the frontpage of an evening newspaper with the picture of the second plane coming in. I can honestly say I was lost for words. The idea that New York was attacked in such a way made no sense to me. Thinking back on it, I realise just how ignorant of the world I was back then.
  21. http://astringentgaming.com/videos/wrack-quakecon-2011-interview_10180 Here's an interview with the lead designer behind Wrack about the game and more for anyone interested.
  22. If you look at the screenshot, you'll notice only 19 out of 36 people from a group with 833 members are playing MW2. 23. If you did a light google on the SC2 boycott or Modern Warfare 2 Boycott you'd know what's up. Both were pretty well known for their desire for dedicated servers/LAN play. But Whatevs! http://www.teamliqui...topic_id=128462 I know about the boycotts but you just mentioned the games themselves so I didn't see where you were coming from. What about the boycotts anyway? That they failed? That people gave in? What are they exhibits for? Modern Warfare 2 could be seen as a successful boycott as Activision have returned to dedicated servers. What reason would they have to do so if not for the talks of boycott and all the bad press they got as a result? Starcraft II was never a really strong boycott just as the Diablo III one isn't. However, there are plenty of people who didn't buy Starcraft 2 after saying they wouldn't. I completely understand why some people may have no problem with this or may take issue but not care enough about it to avoid buying the game but none of that matters when I'm deciding whether to purchase the game or not. Beyond stating your own opinion on the issue at hand, what else is there to do other than belittle the decision and/or principles of those of us with a different opinion. Plenty of people will buy Diablo III. There'll be some who'll buy it after saying they won't but you can be sure that there will be those of us who say we're not buying it and won't. PS. I said I wouldn't buy MW2 and Starcraft 2 for the same reason as many others. I didn't buy them and I won't. An exception to the rule can quickly become the norm. Even if we're the exception, if publishers continue to push things on the consumer that many consumers don't like, they will feel the sting...and yet again, I'm reminded of Niemöller's quote.
  24. You dont need a 22 MB connection to stay online, you can have basic DSl and be just fine and stable. If your internet is not stable its your providers fault and you need to get them to do something about it. If your at a school then you need to talk to your tech team and get them on it. Paying for internet of any broadband form and not having it stable is an issue that can be solved with a phone call and an appointment with your local ISP. As for not taking europe into account, i assumed you guys would have internet of the same speed as i do or even faster and i guess thats wrong to assume. Anyways i will agree that it is annoying but it certainly is not as huge of an issue as the majority of people who will actually play the game will have. The ISP's can't always do something about stability. If thinks break, they should be fixed but how about the patchy connections many get during storms? Ireland certainly has enough of those in these months. It's not a huge issue, no, you're right. However, it is an issue for some of us and we'd rather not have to deal with it, especially when some of us had no intention of playing Diablo 3 online...when we assumed we wouldn't be required to. What do they exhibit? You may have to explain what you're getting at here if you want people to understand it.
