  1. The problem with the "deal with it" stance is that it gives complete power to the developers. Is the consumer simply not allowed to ask for reasonable treatment just because he/she decided to purchase a PC? Most everyone here already knows the PC is treated the way it is because it's not "as popular", but what of it? Saying the consumer should simply shut up isn't a solution.
  2. Australia finally getting an R18+ rating. Finally, something logical happening in this apeshit week.

  3. Wow. Truly shitty day.

Long story short, I do a paid internship last summer and my financial aid office is being a bunch of assdicks telling me that they're taking away my aid because they consider that "income". I tell them I spent all my income over there since silicon valley is kind of fucking expensive to live in, they tell me they want nothing less than proof of every single purchase I made there. Fuckers are being antagonistic just for being dicks.

what in the fuck? What about the whole "work-study" aid thing? I'm not very knowledgeable on it, but as far as I understand an "internship" counts as a "work-study" activity, you may not be working directly for the school, but it only proves that you're in dire need of money. Motherfucker Ima send them a pie.

  4. OnLive Playpack bundle get. Not bad at all when you consider you're essentially renting ~70 games at once for $10 for a month. Pro-tip: using a controller makes input lag virtually undetectable (at least on my connection)

By the same token, "suddenly, games. 70 of them" makes it pretty hard to resist jumping around them all every 5 minutes. Must fight the urge and hunker down on a single one.

Yeah, OnLive's service isn't bad at all. You even get Homefront and F3AR Multiplayer with it!

  5. Word of advice: don't get Azura's artifact unless you want to keep it for yourself. You can actually get a unique artifact from each of the Daedric gods, and the game pulls a dick move by "kindly" escorting you to Azura's artifact in the quest log, which happens to be best one in the game.
  6. New fucking pet peeve: Game news sites announcing deals on games a couple of hours before the deal is over. Joystiq does this a hilarious number of times with Steam sales, but today RPS did the same. Nothing is more infuriating than seeing a game you want, going all excited to the site, and seeing a big fat MSRP price instead of the delicious deal you were promised. Fuck them. Fuck them all.
  7. What I find hilarious about EA's excuses for BF3's Origin exclusivity is the fact that they're trying really hard (and failing) to paint Steam/Valve as "the bad guy". Sure, EA, sure. You're SO concerned about your undying effort to please the consumer. How many multiplayer servers did you shut down this year, again? I forget.

Sadly, my lack of a gaming computer became a blessing in disguise. Sure the Xbox 360 version is inferior, but at least I know that I'm not supporting origin when I buy it.

Blessing in disguise indeed. Truly a shame that DICE is one of the very few mainstream developers giving particular effort in the PC version, then EA struts along demanding this shit be hoisted on their game. The DICE devs must be furious on the inside while they spout this bullshit PR on the outside.

Yeah development costs are same, the licensing however isn't. Also with more n more sales being digital on PC there's no logistics, packing and disc stamping costs.

Faiblesse fails again with a troll post. The extra ten dollars are almost exactly the licensing fee that goes to the console manufacturer.

    4. RockyRan

      RockyRan

$50 isn't entirely arbitrary, given its existence for well over a decade. The $10 price hike for no reason is what's arbitrary. It's not like the game warrants the extra $10 for the PC version anyway, it's just a console port.

  10. Because GAME is the one selling used games and EA isn't? Once EA has their own trade-in store that sells used EA games I'll agree with you. GAME gets to keep used sales because they're the ones selling the used games. It's a bit silly to demand EA get a cut every time the game changes hands for whatever reason, especially because in their eyes it really doesn't change their day-to-day operations.
  11. Indeed. I began to think about what would happen if someone would run a business in deliberately the worst possible way, then I remembered this: Then I laffed.
  12. At the end of the day, I agree technically speaking. It's their business, they can run it the way they want. Doesn't mean I have to agree with it, doesn't mean they can be dicks about it, and it doesn't mean I have to accept it or buy their products. But yes, they can do what they want, ultimately.
  13. It's simple. Valve does the very typical "we can deny service to you for any reason" clause, whereas EA's EULA specifically states at which point will they deny service to you, and specifically use the word will in such a case, not "may". It's far more specific, and thus more draconian. In regards to the used games making a dent on service costs, it simply isn't true. When a copy is sold the physical copy as well as ownership and ability to play the game is transferred. Person A playing the game for a month then selling it to person B who plays it for a month takes exactly the same effort from EA's part as person A playing the game for two months without selling it. There's no "extra" cost incurred when accommodating used game owners. Simple.
  14. http://www.giantbomb...ds-owners/3546/ I don't know what to make of this. To be perfectly honest I really don't think this price drop means Nintendo's going down the shitter financially. IMO, I think it's just not doing phenomenally well, so they're being aggressive. But then I read apology after apology and I wonder if Nintendo knows the situation is more dire than I think it is. I mean, at this point wouldn't it be better to just keep their heads down than attract the industry's attention by waving a gigantic "WE FUCKED UP" flag? Or are they really in THAT much trouble? EDIT: Then again, isn't it ingrained in the Japanese culture to apologize all the time? I'm probably reading too much into this.
  15. This week's Extra Punctuation is probably the best Yahtzee has done in terms of a worthy discussion argued with some very good points made: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/extra-punctuation/9053-Extra-Punctuation-Keeping-Old-Games-Intact I agree with it all, thought I would like to point out that there have been quite a few efforts to start archiving games. I know that Stanford University has a video game library that lets you check out any game you want on any platform, and if they don't have said game you request it like you would request a book. They've got a pretty sizable collection too, from current-gen libraries of games to really old Atari stuff.
  16. This is something I'd like to see. Exactly how is this going to play out in the long run for GameStop? Because this is going to put a damper on their business one way or the other. At the very least they'll have to make a permanent price drop of all their games that have this thing by $10, because otherwise people are just not going to buy their games. EA's going to push this further and further just to see with how much they can get away with, and people are eventually going to catch on, so they'll eventually turn away from buying used games at GS if they figure that $50 copy actually is a $60 copy after buying the multiplayer code. Is GS going to fight back with something of their own, or are they just going to suck it up and drop their used prices?
  17. Indeed. Some costs are so minimal they're really just built into the day-to-day operations. Cherry picking them and dragging them out to blow them out of proportion and saying that's the reason why they charge $10 per person really doesn't make for a good argument at all. I'd really like to know what magical servers they run that cost $10 to store a few KB's of data. Those better be some damn magical servers run by unicorn leprechauns.
  18. http://www.joystiq.c...th-online-pass/ Battlefield 3 will also "probably" have the same thing now. Truth be told, it would be more surprising if it DIDN'T ship with anti-used-sales measures considering how it's one of EA flagship titles. Of note is the hilariously poor argument: Because, you know, they live in an alternate reality where selling used games consists of duplicating a copy, forcing the poor devs to "create" extra server space considering how the guy who "sold" the game is TOTALLY still using the service.
  19. I always thought Spore was hated on because of hype backlash and was at least somewhat good. After having played it, wow. It managed to fail at meeting my low expectations. It's truly shit, enough for a rant (I'll probably put one up soon). >:|

I'm into the Tribal stage or something. I'm going to keep playing because I already paid $5 for this turd plus I can make one of those "playthrough diaries" in here. I'll get enjoyment out of my five bucks, even if it comes from just trashing a bad game.

  20. Whats the problem with that? Every console has DLC, so now 3DS has it. No big deal. the Wii had the option to use it but barely used it. Whats wrong with the the 3DS having it? You'd be complaining if it didn't have DLC if it didn't have it I never really complained that there wasn't DLC on the 3DS, actually. What bothers me the most is the fact that DLC is a very large aspect of modern online connectivity in gaming, but rather than Nintendo bringing over the modern online connectivity in its entirety, they're picking and choosing the worst part of said connectivity (being DLC) and conveniently leaving the best part of it (being everything else) in the dust. I say if they want to modernize their online functionality on 3DS that they don't cherrypick what they want to bring. Bring the good stuff as well, but they're not doing that because it's not as instantly profitable. This also looks to me like a move in desperation to get 3rd parties to pay attention to the handheld. IIRC, DLC support wasn't really announced or talked about in the 3DS's development or launch. So no, I'm not really complaining for the sake of complaining. I just find it somewhat dishonest that they still got people using Friend Codes on the 3DS but hey, paid DLC? No problem, we'll roll that out in the next week! Ugh.
  21. http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/31/paid-dlc-functionality-coming-to-3ds-wii-u/ Aaaand the respect goes right back down. I thought Nintendo fanboys touted the lack of DLC as the silver lining of having inadequate online functionality in Ninty hardware? The "worst of both worlds" saying couldn't fit better in this case. 3DS online is still incredibly crappy, but it still has paid DLC anyway. Hooray.
  22. http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/29/iwata-taking-50-pay-cut-over-3ds-performance/ Regardless of whatever I've said before of Nintendo, this right here commands respect for Iwata. Take a good look, American CEOs. You could learn a thing or two from this man.
  23. I know why the PS3 was sold at such a high price but at least with the 3DS first time buyers are being getting all that cool free shit. I'm not saying Nintendo aren't worrying about this I'm just saying its good to see a price drop like this. At the end of the day the consumers win! Oh, definitely. Consumers most definitely win out of all this, and it's nice that they're offering 20 games. You're three cups of coffee short of 1-game-per-cup
  24. No other company has had such a huge dip so close to launch. As rocky and others have pointed out if they can do this it means it's been running at close to $80 profit per unit at least. That's to abysmal. HOLY FUCK THAT WAS AWESOME! Yeah but look at the PS3's price drops? Sony dropped it by $100 7 months later. Also worth pointing out its abysmal but its not like any of you bought it! Also none of us know the exact profit Nintendo were making. Now theres reports they going to be losing money on it, so its not exactly 'abysmal' http://www.eurogamer...-every-3ds-sold I wouldn't be so quick to believe that. IIRC I don't think Nintendo has ever sold anything below a profit. Something truly extraordinary must've happened if they are indeed selling the 3DS at a loss. Regarding the PS3, that's a completely different situation. The PS3 was made expensive in the first place because of Blu-ray, and Sony always wanted to keep costs as low as humanly possible (remember, they were selling at a loss even at the launch price of $600). They dropped the price by $100 because that's what their plan was. Nintendo, however, sold at quite the profit from day 1 with the 3DS and are now having a very large change of heart regarding the pricing. This is an incredibly aggressive move very unlike Nintendo, so they must obviously think they're in big trouble.
  25. The 3DS launch was abysmal. The game selection was very thin (it still is, except for Zelda, which is a remake of a 12 year old game...), a bunch of features were there on the menu but were locked out because they weren't ready yet (meaning the handheld was rushed out the door), the 3D didn't (and still doesn't) have universal appeal, and it was incredibly overpriced. Speaking of overpriced, the $80 drop is appalling. Nintendo always sells their hardware at a profit, meaning with each 3DS sold they've been making MORE than $80 of pure profit per handheld. At least $80. That's incredibly arrogant and massively overpriced. And I totally agree with P4 in that this is largely thanks to the Vita. Looks like Nintendo thought that Sony was going to just price it higher no matter what, since they've been keeping their "premium hardware" thing for a while now. I don't think Nintendo or anyone else thought that Sony was going to price the handheld competitively, given the features of the Vita. But they did, and they caught Nintendo with their pants down trying to overcharge for their handheld. Nintendo must've been scared shitless if they dropped the price by this much, this early in the life of the handheld. They obviously thought the handheld was going to crash and burn this holiday season, and crash and burn in general after that if they kept with the current pricing. Just...wow. I still can't get over them wanting at least $80 of pure profit per handheld.
