I'll keep that in mind. I updated to the most recent release of Dolphin and the internal resolutions are labelled more explicitly in it. 3x native res is for 1080p and 4x is for 1440p. You can change those on the fly while the game is running, so it's pretty easy to compare and see that beyond 3x it starts to not make much of a difference at 1080p. For now, Galaxy looks good enough for me with 3x internal res and some minimal AA without any need for downsampling. My GPU is kinda weak (GTX 960), so downsampling is rarely a viable option. The only game I can't play without downsampling is Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus because it has no AA whatsoever, for some fucking reason. So even at 1080p it looks pretty rough. It was originally a Vita exclusive, though, so it runs fine even on a potato. I downsample it from 4K because why the hell not and I could probably go even higher.

Hahaha, sorry. I was able to find the game pretty quickly, so I wanted to try it right away. I use a similar setup for the Steam controller and yeah, it works well enough. Having the trackpad for the pointer is great. It's one of those rare, specific use cases that really makes me appreciate the Steam controller. Also, it's back to running normally now. What the shit? I think I know what happened but there's definitely some weird behavior going on. I have DSR enabled in my driver settings because it's easier to use than Gedosato for downsampling, so sometimes I can set games to resolutions up to 4K even though my monitor stops at 1080p. Pretty sure the slowdown started happening after I tried setting Dolphin's display resolution to 4K for shits and giggles. Of course, that's the first thing I turned down once I saw it ran like shit. I can only guess something got stuck somehow and rebooting my PC finally reset it. It's the only explanation I can think of. Either that or I was so sleep deprived last night that the slowdown was in my brain the entire time... Oh and I'm pretty sure it didn't go all low res on me like in your video when I played that level. I definitely would've noticed that and it would've bugged the hell out of me.

Cool, thanks. And if I can find a way to use the Steam Controller with it (should be as simple as adding the emulator's executable as a non-Steam game, I think), then the right trackpad and the gyro would probably work even better than what you're suggesting. Also, just had a look at my emulation folder and turns out I already have Dolphin installed. Guess I just need to find a copy of Galaxy now. edit: Well, I'm happy to report that Operation Space Pirate⢠is a resounding success! The game runs at a solid 60fps at 1080p (with an internal resolution of four times the native res) with 4x AA and AF. Also, am I just sleep deprived or is this game supposed to be super disorienting at first? I was getting kinda dizzy chasing those rabbits around that small planet... edit2: Well, shit. Not sure what happened but it's now running like complete shit and I'm pretty sure I didn't change anything. Either the settings I mentioned above weren't actually activated (doubtful) or... yeah, I have no idea.

Yeah, I meant because of the motion controls. No idea how much Galaxy relies on them.

Yeah, games with simple visuals/art style like the Mario series clean up really nicely at higher resolution. Wind Waker has also aged really well for the same reason. I really should look into setting up Dolphin on my PC. I could never be bothered to mess around with any emulators that require more than just loading up a rom but, if the controls aren't too much of a hassle to set up, it could be fun to finally see why people think so highly of Mario Galaxy. I've been wanting to play more Mario ever since I played 3D Land earlier this year.

That was a joke at the expense of UWP.

That's debatable.

Their ports' quality range from passable to absolute dog shit but the main problem is that they never bother fixing them. Those I've played (Dragon Quest Heroes and Attack on Titan) were good enough for me, but some remain completely broken to this day. As far as I'm aware, the graphical options of One Piece Pirate Warriors 3 still don't work. I mean, that's about as broken as you can possibly get.

So, following the news from a couple weeks ago that the most recent Atelier game is coming to Steam in the future, Koei Tecmo have just announced that the previous game, Atelier Sophie, is coming to Steam on Feb 7 2017 (along with some other game I've never heard of). From what I understand, this one is the starting point of the current sub-series. So, if you're like me and have never played an Atelier game, it seems like the game to jump in with. Now all that remains is to hope for a quality port. I'm not sure if Gust are doing it in-house or what but they are owned by Koei Tecmo. So, there's definitely cause to worry here. Of course, Durante happens to be a massive Atelier fan so, should the port turn out to be awful, he'll most likely have a fix out within seconds lol.

Yeah, that's fair. I think that's something to be judged on a game-to-game basis, though. I can't speak for Titanfall 2 because I haven't played it. But I think Doom actually has more of a story (and characterization for the Doom marine) than it honestly ever needed to have. Some scientist went insane and opened a portal to Hell. You're the motherfucking Doom Slayer and it's up to you to close that shit up and curb stomp a whole bunch of demons in the process. I mean, maybe I went in with low expectations but to me that's all Doom needs to be as long as the gameplay is great. Although, to be fair, it does have some pretty solid visual design (the Titan's Realm level pretty much outdoes Brutal Legend as far as being a metal album cover come to life) and a kick-ass soundtrack. So there is a little more to it than just gameplay + level design.

When people said the Doom campaign was amazing, it never even occurred to me that they might be referring to anything other than the gameplay. I mean, it's Doom. You're on Mars and there's demons. What more could you possibly expect? Beyond that, all you need is fun combat and level design that supports it. And that's exactly what I got out of it so I can't say I disagree with the general sentiment that it was amazing. I do know what you mean, though. I felt the same way about Wolfenstein: The New Order. I loved it but it did feel like everyone else was seeing something in it that I wasn't.

Finally some proper gameplay trailers! These show some new enemies and locations (at least, they were new to me), so that's your spoiler warning. I think that's about all I want to see before release but I don't know if I'll be able to help myself lol. I'm avoiding all press gameplay demos, though. Watching a montage of short clips like these is one thing, most of it is completely lacking context. But a continuous 10mins section like some sites and channels were posting recently is definitely more than I wanna see.

Last night my friend was telling me about a talk he attended by one of the main animators that worked on Hitman Go. He had worked on Human Revolution before ending up on the Hitman Go team and said that it felt like a huge downgrade career-wise. I didn't think to ask if he mentioned it but that might have actually played a part in them dropping that style.

Doom. Finished the campaign last night. I usually try to keep my expectations in check when the internet praises a game this much but holy shit, in this case I was not let down. This game is incredible! It even blows Wolfenstein TNO out of the water. It didn't click immediately, the first 2-3 hours were good but it wasn't blowing me away or anything. My shooter fatigue was still very much there. Then more enemy types started showing up and things got progressively more chaotic to the point where you pretty much have to be constantly moving and jumping all over the place to even stay alive, because running backwards and circle strafing just isn't going to cut it. And once that happens, the game becomes just pure goddamn fun. It blows my fucking mind that they somehow managed to make this game look dull and boring in pre-release footage because in reality it's basically the polar opposite of that. That's some seriously impressive marketing ineptitude right there. Now I'm kinda curious to go back and finally play Doom 3 all the way through. This one doesn't repeat the mistake of trying to be an all serious horror game and instead rightfully focuses on being fun. Could be interesting to compare and contrast the two.

Hitman Go was great so this was a no-brainer. They only took a little over a year to bring it over this time, so with some luck we'll get Deus Ex Go before the end of 2017.

Yeah, I remembered a drop in quality after, well, you know. Hadn't gotten very far in that part of the show, though. Now that I finished it....yeah. Also, Crunchyroll is doing this holidays thing where they add a bunch of shows on every Thursday until Dec 22nd, mostly stuff from the Funimation deal so far. This week's lot looks like a bunch of garbage but last week they added Ping Pong The Animation, which I had been hearing is great for a while. Finished it last night and yep, that is one fantastic series. The art style was off-putting at first but it really grew on me over the course of the series. If you guys haven't watched it already I strongly recommend you check it out.

And people act like Konami was somehow in the wrong for putting their foot down and telling him to ship his fucking game already! Seriously, though, Fuck Konami...
-
You joke but there would still be a bunch of stuff left. Some of it better than any game could ever hope to be.

Wait, Del Toro?? When did they confirm that? I don't think his name was in the trailer? Oh wait, was that him in the trailer? Lol, didn't even recognize him. Not the kind of involvement I was expecting. Anyway, this is much more exciting to me than the initial reveal. I am seriously digging the visual style. The skeleton soldiers in particular are just fucking metal.

Hitman. Just beat the final story mission. I still enjoyed Absolution despite it being an abysmal failure as a Hitman game but this, holy shit, this is the real deal. This is Hitman. I'll have to dig into it a bit more to be sure but I think it might actually have dethroned Blood Money as the best in the series. The one thing I found a little disappointing is that there's only six main levels total (seven if you count the tutorial) but they all provide so much replay value (and are so fucking massive) that it's kinda hard to complain. It's also a pretty good example of episodic gaming done right. I was initially turned off by the business model big time and only bought the intro pack to try the game out at launch, but now I almost regret not getting the full thing from the start. There isn't enough of a story for it to lose momentum between episodes and each level offers an absolute metric fuck ton of replayability. I would've probably sunk a lot of time into the game by now had I been playing it on and off over a period of multiple months. They've already confirmed that the game will be getting a second season and I'll definitely be getting that one on day one.

Lol, yeah, the last few eps have been on a whole different level than anything that's happened in any of the parts so far. I never really considered JoJo to be a particularly suspenseful show in general but it's been getting progressively crazier since the start of the "July 15th" arc. I mean, I've been rewatching Death Note this week and today's episode was almost as intense as that. Speaking of which, man Death Note is so fucking goooooood. Can't believe I never actually finished it. The manga originally started when I was in my biggest manga/anime phase, so I was reading it week to week pretty early on. But at some point I got sick of waiting for each chapter and just stopped following it. Then I did the exact same thing with the anime lol. That ending will have been a long time coming for me.

Well, the first game is honestly straight up shit. It only has a handful of interesting levels and most of those were remade in the third game anyway. The appeal mostly came from how novel it was. Hitman 2 and Hitman: Contracts are where the series became good but I can see them not holding up very well, I guess. They would probably feel clunky in a lot of ways today. Blood Money should totally hold up, though.
-
Holy shit, how the fuck have you guys been watching JoJo week to week without going insane?! I've only been up to date for two weeks and the wait is already killing me!
-
I've been slowly playing through the full season this week and it is so good! It's basically Blood Money 2 in terms of gameplay and level design but with the few good things Absolution introduced (mostly Contracts mode and general QOL improvements). It's a steal at that price, even if it's just the intro pack.

I've been tempted to get it all day because it's sub 30$ for the first time on Steam, even though I really shouldn't. Then someone pointed out that after conversion from GBP it ends up being 4$ cheaper on Gamesplanet UK. Thanks, Brexit! Holy shit at that install size, though. O_O 71GB?!? I barely have 90GB free right now on my Steam drive...
