  1. Yes, but if the slaves were treated exceptionally well, it could be better than a society without slaves or gender equality.
  2. It's not super hard like, say, I Wanna Be The Guy. It's just a game with actual fail states.
  3. I didn't play official ironman mode, but I didn't reload my first campaign at all. At 6 (maybe 10-15 missions) hours in I realized I had kinda fucked up by not building any additional satellites. Then I had my top elite squad wiped out assaulting a landed (not crashed) UFO. I don't think my second-tier squad is up to the task of going after cyber disks, and I'm pretty sure I'll hit the drop-out threshold within the month. tonight is time to restart, this time in real ironman mode. God, I love this game.
  4. That's because you're a big ol' wuss, Ethan. It's okay; not all of us can be goddamn heroes. But, seriously, it punishes failure in the way Civilization punishes failure in that it's not really about exploring the plot but more about learning to cope with constraints not seen in many modern games.
  5. XCOM is the first game that's kept me up until 3am in over a year.

    1. FMW

      FMW

Turn based strategy games do that to me better than any other genre. Be it PC Civilization or console Fire Emblem or handheld FF Tactics, those games just grip me and make me want to never turn them off.

  6. This game is pretty rad. In an era of gaming where some of the biggest games have few consequences for player failure and focus on multiplayer, XCOM dares to be deliciously unforgiving and single-player focused. I'm loving it.
  7. XCOM: Purchased. One hour to go until unlock.

  8. Think I'm gonna buy XCOM and get the preorder bonus. Anyone need a free copy of Civ 5 for PC?

No. XCOM. Dishonored can wait a week. Bethesda and Arkane will still get my $60, don't worry dudes.

I actually really enjoyed Brink when people actually worked as a team (which was rare).

  10. Looper was great, great, great fun. The time travel not being "realistic" is fine; time travel itself creates unsolveable paradoxes unless you adopt a parallel-universe style of time travel, but then you lose a lot of the fun messing-with-causality storylines, like those in Looper or Back to the Future.
  11. Watched a gameplay video of XCOM Enemy Unknown and just got unbelievably hyped for it. Can't decide whether I'll play Dishonored or XCOM next week.

The demo isn't fantastic. It forces you to play on easy and one of the two missions is a tutorial that's 100% hand-holding.

You can up the difficulty through a .ini file, though.

Holy shit Dishonored comes out next week? I need to catch up on vidya.

Ahh, I wish I had money.

  12. I really want to like Dishonored. But the trailers are all so awful. They're just terrible trailers.

Let's not even bring Hitman into this if we're talking about good trailers.

Once I decided I was getting Dishonored I went dark on all stuff for it, so I haven't seen the trailers. Are they really that bad?

The trailers don't make the game look bad; the trailers themselves are awful. Hard to tell what's going on, what gameplay is like, and what the world is like. Full disclosure: I have only seen them as ads on Escapist and Gametrailers videos. I have not seen every trailer released to the masses.

    Sub vs Dub

Subs for all films and shows. Subs for some games were the acting/original language is very important, dubs for most games, though.
  14. Interested in getting this game in the next few weeks but I am worried it will be way too MP-centric for me to enjoy. I enjoyed the first one solo; is BL2 solo-friendly or solo-unfriendly?
  15. Laphroaig is tasty. I've been alternating between single malts and bourbon lately. I'm a whiskey and whisky man these days. Though I have had some great ciders, too.
  16. Obsidian just unveiled a Kickstarter for their own old-school RPG game in teh style of Icewind Dale, Baldur's gate 2 and, importantly, Planescape: Torment. I believe. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/obsidian/project-eternity

"I'm tired of designing content and interactions that caters to consoles and console controllers.” Damn right.

  17. Techno-libertarians have a lot invested in the scheme. It's hilarious that the value of the bitcoin is propped up by a strange marriage of extreme libertarians seeking an alternative to the gold standard to the forces of the black market. Then again, I *do* buy all my LSD, cocaine and assault rifles with bitcoins, so I shouldn't complain. Duke: You are absolutely incorrect. Mitt Romney is and never has been a human being.

@madbass; different client betas for different things. When they end so does beta participation.

      Alex Heat

      Awwww yeah.

Considering one of the biggest reasons I've never really took to PC gaming is being glued to my desk (of which I spend enough time as it is), this might actually mean I'll play more PC games.

  19. Steam Big Picture. FUCK YES MY FRIENDS.

  20. Why on earth would she not take what they're offering? Does she want to sue for more or something? If not, she should just take the money and run. Edit: Under the law she may very well have a right to the money anyway.
  21. That's not just common law, Ethan; it's the federal statutory regime as well. See: 18 USC § 2241 http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/2241
  22. Just had to swap out my Corsair TX750 750 watt PSU for an Antec Earthwatts 650 watt power supply because the more expensive and powerful Corsair PSU kept crapping out on me while I was playing games. RMA for Corsair takes at least three weeks by my calculations, so I just bought the Antec on sale from J&R. I was deathly afraid that the real culprit was low voltage from my wall outlet. Fortuantely, I was able to play games for four hours last night without a hitch. Gonna RMA the Corsair and sell it; anyone want a $100+ PSU for $50 plus S&H?
  23. Denying folks preventative care is good for them; it builds character.
  24. Nope. Facial challenges can, and are, be made pursuant to any Constitutional clause or Amendment. First Amendment facial challenges are the most likely to succeed, but I've seen facial challenges under Due Process, Equal Protection and even the Commerce Clause.
  25. Not strictly true. Those laws are vulnerable to a facial challenge for violation of the First Amendment and Article 6 of the Constitution. It's just not worth the time and money to challenge them unless the states try to apply them. Edit: Solyndra is a tempest in a teapot. I'm not happy about it, certainly, but in the scheme of things it's pretty minor. I'm more angry about Obama's drone assassination program. But voting for the GOP won't cure that; it has a hard-on for that unilateral and despotic death-from-above stuff.
