I'm always astounded that folks think a sales tax is more fair than an income tax since it disproportionately burdens the poor. Further more, it's just not good economic policy. Income taxes disincentivze hoarding and thus promote spending, increasing the amount of cash active in the economy, while sales taxes disincentivize spending, which reduces the amount of cash available at large. Money that's sitting in a bank account, or in foreign investments doesn't do the economy any real good. It's only in the weird world of conservative nonsense that sales taxes make sense over income taxes.

It was one of the earlier 30GB games this generation. Was it multiple discs on 360? That mouse is an abomination of design, Dean. It looks like it would be painful to use.

So many hard decisions! Question:
-
I'm also finding out that I'm quickly leveling beyond many sidequests and Witcher contracts. I think I'm around level 9, but I have a good number of level 6,7, and 8 quests, including most of the main quests, that are still pending. :\ Also:

I have been consistently impressed with this game after playing a dozen or so hours. So far, I've been playing Geralt as someone who tries to avoid causing any ruckus, and I haven't had too many consequences of my game choices come back to bite me in the ass. It seems like I can minimize the harm done by my decisions if I avoid acting like a white knight and instead act cautiously. I am wondering about one of my decisions, though: I also love that Geralt's hair continues to wave about in the breeze regardless of whether he's indoors (well, all dangly objects seem to be affected by the wind even indoors) or if I've paused the game to go to the game menus. Witcher hair is powerful stuff.

The UC games are fun, but nothing to get all worked up about. They were a good way for Naughty Dog to warm up for the excellent Last of Us, though.

I mean, yeah, the graphics are secondary to the gameplay and writing for me, and I will absolutely be buying this game because I fucking LOVE Fallout games (though I can't justify doing the GMG preorder yet). I am nevertheless surprised Bethesda has not significantly upped its character art and animation game, is all.

I have a gift copy of Double Fine's Massive Chalice. Message me if you'd like a copy. I think it's PC-only, but I could be wrong. Specifically, I have a humble store link to a steam key that was included as a backer award. It's a very odd game, so please be sure you actually want it before messaging me.

Pete Hines congratulated Perlman on Twitter, and he admitted he kept it secret (I assume by lying/joking when he said he wasn't in it) so I assume the narrator/announcer is him. https://twitter.com/perlmutations/status/606103480504180737

I am excited, but also somewhat disappointed that it doesn't look as good, graphics-wise, as the Witcher 3, especially the animation. I'd expect Bethesda to have as much talent and resources as CD Projekt Red. Edit: Also, is that Ron Perlman as the radio announcer? I sure hope so.

I think it's more likely to be announced as releasing next May, or thereabouts. I do think there is a small chance it will be announced for this holiday season. I doubt it will be announced for holiday 2016, but I am not 100% sure.

All the quotes of my post from last year threw me off.

Fallout 4, my friends. Fallout 4.

Looks like there will be a Fallout-related announcement tomorrow: http://fallout.bethsoft.com/

No patch to 1.05 PC version here yet. I expect it will take a few more days.

Game of Thrones (Current episode spoilers)

Great ep. As far as how far everything is compared to the books, we are all at or beyond the published material now. I would argue that Tyrion's journey is so different from the books that it's hard to say whether he's caught up, ahead, or just very, very different. I suspect though that the season will end caught up or beyond with the books in the main, with a number of elements from earlier books to pop up next season, at least regarding the Greyjoys. I think a lot of the plotlines have been or will be changed so significantly that asking if the character is at the same place as s/he is in the books will be meaningless for about a third of the characters. Right now, Jon, Danaerys, Arya, Bran, and Cersei are roughly tracking with their book counterparts (with Jon being given a lot more to do in the show; Hardhome happens off-page in the books),Tyrion appears to have had his plot accelerated , Sansa is in a very, very different place in the books, as are Jaime and Brienne . I think the show will feature significantly different plotlines from the books, but I think they'll end up in very similar places overall, if that makes any sense. -
Well, the first three can also be watched independently without any issues, too, though they definitely have an order. The second one is great, and still watchable. Keep in mind that Miller has always used tons of practical effects, so the films really, really, really feel like they're made by the same person and, excepting the first, set in the same world. One of the amazing things about Fury Road is that it feels like a late 70's/early 80's grindhouse action movie, just with a big budget and a great production team. I mean, there are filmmaking techniques he uses in all four films that are not used in any other blockbusters today that make Fury Road really feel like it's of a piece with the earlier movies. Lots of quick zooms to characters' faces for reaction shots, and speeding up the film while dropping frames to make everything feel frenetic.

The second and third are totally watchable. The first is not apocalyptic in the same way as the later three, as it takes place before any nuclear war. The original cut of the first one is hard for us USAns to understand because everyone in the movie has a thick as hell Aussie accent. The redub is kinda lame, though. But the continuity isn't important, really. Mad Max movies are like the the Man With No Name Westerns. The first always does take place first, as the central event that shapes Max's approach to the Wasteland and its people occurs in it, which I put in spoiler tags below, but the initial voiceover to any of the other films tells you what you need to know.
-
The GTX 970 is an excellent value. I'm not worried about future-proofing.
-
I know I'm late to the party, but Mad Max was a brilliant film. I have never seen such a kickass and exciting scathing indictment of male power fantasies. Beautiful photography, great editing, masterful filmmaking all-around with gleefully insane elements that are nonetheless coherent when taken as a whole. A few wonky special effects here and there, and Tom Hardy's ever-present weird voice (he has a weird voice in every movie he's been in that I have seen since Inception, for some odd reason; even the independent movie that consists entirely of him making phone calls from his car). I cannot really believe that Hollywood allowed Miller to make the film the way he did, but I guess the man who made Babe 2: Pig in the City gets whatever he wants. Edit: Oh, and your girlfriend is completely incorrect, Nexus; the story, while not convoluted, was excellent. Only Max's character arc was kind of meh. Edit 2: Upon reflection, even Max's arc was good.

Yeah, I got the regen in daylight ability early on and use it as the functional equivalent of a rest, swapping it in to heal while running about and swapping it out when I need to be lethal. Thanks for the tips regarding breaking stuff down. I'll sell shit unless I can break the item down into something I need for a useful recipe. Cannot wait to dig into this game.
-
Question: I am still in the very early tutorial 'open world' (only had an hour or two to play here and there the past two weeks), and I just want to know what everyone thinks regarding whether I should break stuff down into crafting components or just sell the junk/swords/etc for the cash. As in, what's generally the way to decide whether to break an item down or to just sell it? Is crafting even generally worth it throughout the game? I'm really enjoying it, so far, but just want to get a handle on how to approach the various game systems. If it helps, I'm playing on the difficulty above normal because a lot of reviewers and players have said that normal is an absolute cakewalk, while the harder difficulties actually feel more rewarding because you have to use signs and potions and oils and such more often and more strategically. It is annoying that I can't rest to heal, though.

Sometime around the turn of 2015/2016 will probably be a good time to build a computer that will easily weather the balance of this console generation, since you don't upgrade all that often anyway.
-
I wonder how much I've 'saved' by using GMG and other super-big discounts exclusive to PC versions of games. Probably a lot. But whatever the amount I've 'saved', it's probably dwarfed by the number of impulse purchases of discount PC games I would not have otherwise bought, to be fair.
