DRM, Online Pass, Project Ten Dollar and the like
MasterDex replied to Yantelope's topic in General Gaming Chat
While I won't defend Ubisoft's DRM in particular and I'd rather not deal with any DRM at all, big publicly traded companies do have a responsibility to their shareholders and they'd be shirking that responsibility if they left their games unprotected so we have to, sadly, put up with shitty DRM because no-one has a better idea. It's the million dollar question - How do we protect our product without hurting the end-user? -
I really dislike that he starts by promoting your comment and even replies to it - actually inviting you to respond further, when diplomatically if he had really felt the need to un-star you he could've done it and walked away. Instead he invited you to a conversation and banned you because he didn't like what you had to say. Seems rather childish to me. Reminds me exactly why I've stopped giving Kotaku page views though. That's the thing. I know people have had their problems with Crecente or Plunkett or whoever, hell I've had my own arguments with them but Joel just can't seem to accept any criticism whatsoever. I have respect for Jim Rosingol over on RPS but even he had trouble making his point about bribes and so on with how Joel wrote his article. I feel Joel was moved to Kotaku because he had made too bad a name for himself over at Gizmodo but if that is the reason, he certainly hasn't learned his lesson. A lot of the criticism could have been avoided if he had responded to the criticisms against him responsibly but he couldn't even manage that. That's what pisses me off the most. He couldn't be bothered.

When you get from 85% bullshit to 100% bullshit after learning to use Photoshop? I like the idea of a gym but I know I wouldn't keep it up and thus waste money for no reason. I've started cycling again. I like it. It forces me to hit my wall and because I'll hit it early in any journey I take, it also forces me to push past my wall. I've also dropped back down from a 36 waist to a 34 waist since starting to cycle again..now I just need to find a pair of jeans that fit my waist and my legs. Who knew 34-30 was a rare size?! It wasn't before!

Cool! You've signed up...and met an old nemesis already, it seems! See! Just like Kotaku!

Sorry for the double post but I had to post this: http://kotaku.com/5834795/i-cant-believe-it-the-razer-blade-might-not-just-be-the-future-of-pc-gamingit-may-be-the-future-of-pcs?comment=42354642#comments Ohhhh, Joel. You're really not doing yourself any favours.
-
Most certainly. The article was terrible but Joel's reaction to the criticism was the worst.

I'll support that! Leave the recipe alone. It's 180 years of continued success. It's fine. Want citrus? Separate label!

You don't get to accuse Kotaku of pilfering content and not crediting the source (even though they've done so plenty of times) and get to keep your star! You don't get to accuse Kotaku. Ever. Respect my authority!

It ain't retro unless it's 16k.

Vicarious Shaner's High School Survival Kit

When ya gotta go, best to know there's a back-up plan. -
Ah yeah! Shinta! I'll send him a link the next time I see one of his comments.

Welcome to the forums, Gunflame! All we need now is the last few old stars to make the move over here and we can finally begin our invasion...I mean...*ahem*....who said anything about an invasion?

At least Jim conceded that Joel's article came from a point of fanboyism. It may not be the admission of bullshit we're expecting but it's probably the closest we'll ever see Jim revealing his real thoughts on Joel's article. I think what annoyed me more than the article was Joel's response to his detractors. On top of what he said on his twitter, he never once approached anyone with any semblance of a counter argument.
-
To be fair, I think mine, despite the quality of the writing was borderline offensive as well, if not outright so...but then again, you could describe many of my comments on Kotaku as such. I've never been one to hold my tongue.

One moment, I'll go piss off the boss of another internet blog and get right on that.

He's either a Razer fanboy (which I doubt), or very easily hyped/impressed (which seems more likely). Articles that imply a greater meaning in a release can either make for good writing or become disasters. Like, say, if you were to write an article when Resident Evil 4 was released on how the over-the-shoulder camera is more important than the actual game. He's trying to make good points on a very bad example and the whole article suffers from it. He could have saved if it was written from the perspective of a console gamer and saying what the Razer Blade would mean to him as a console gamer intimidated by PC releases. I completely agree. I can see where he was coming from (even if I do completely disagree with the premise) but he just took far too many liberties for any point he was making to be taken seriously. What annoyed me as well was that he was saying that "for now, $2,800 is fine". Fuck that! No, it's not. Saying that it is just propagates the myth that PC gaming is too expensive and you can see the effect of that in the comments with people saying "This is why I don't care about PC gaming, it's too expensive" and so on. I think I'd be here all day if I was to pick apart everything I thought was wrong with the article so I'll leave it at that. Edit: Joel, such a nice guy:

I've heard nothing but good things about the HTC brand. I'm on a shitty X8, it does the job but the fucker doesn't even have videochat. Hell, my last, now 10 year old, phone had videochat. What the hell, Sony-Erricson?
-
Damn you and your pink comic sans! How can I get angry with you!
-
Yeah, I honestly don't think Joel was paid by Razer for the article but I couldn't help but make the comment because it did stink a bit like a paid review. I mean, the guy ignores all these crucial details just to make his point (and help sell the Razer) and then acts offended when people ask the most obvious question - Did you get paid to write this? With Joel as the boss of Kotaku, the future really does not bode well.
-
Just read that. Jim seems to be taking a higher road than Joel, at least in his article, but it seems he knows Joel personally so there's bound to be some defence there (and defence for journalistic integrity). I also found a great picture in the comments on RPS: Also, in the thread where I got destarred, Joel came back at someone with this little bit:

True but I know for a fact that I'd remove the mic at some point, put it somewhere and lose it, like my 360 and PS3 mics. When it's all together, I can just hang it over a speaker and I know it'll be there. I know I'm being kind of illogical but I just like the idea of a headset more than a seperate mic and headphones. That said, I will take a look at what I can get for my price range and who knows, I may even change my mind.

I think I deserve a fucking medal about now, guys! ..... Guys? C'mon! Maybe a star? 5 upvotes! 5 upvotes! Ah, who am I kidding. Heartless bastards! I mean...I love you guys! Welcome, newcomers!

Sorry Johnny but I'm pretty set on a headset. I'm sure that buying separately would mean better quality in both departments but all I want is one half-way decent headset that I can put on and chat away with.
