When the whole of New York has gone to shit, what else you gonna do?

So here's something I didn't know until...last night. Many of the spellings in US English, primarily things taking the U out or making things more phonetic like sulfate, are just shy over a hundred years old. Basically some dude put together an advisory board type deal to officially change the spellings of a few hundred words (I'd imagine the intention was for everything) These new words were formally rejected by congress who declared that folks "should observe and adhere to the standard of orthography prescribed in generally accepted dictionaries of the English language." You still ended up using a chunk of them. At the end of the advisory boards life its founder wrote: "I think I hav been patient long enuf... I hav much better use for twenty thousand dollars a year." It reads like one of my brothers facebook updates. In other words, without this guy interfering, modern American English would probably be very much the same as modern English. colourful sulphates included. The one I like is Melville Dewey (aka decimal system) disliked the ways English words are spelt too. He had a health club later in life and served: Hadok, Poted beef with noodles and Parsli & Masht potato with letis. And last but not least: ghoti

You know one of the weirdest things about you beefy is your love of EVE. I'm kinda similar. I'm not much of a subbing MMO kinda guy, but I'd like to get into EVE some more.

RPGs having enemies with elemental weaknesses and defenses is kind of the point. So you don't just go through spamming "Fire" all the time. You have to adapt. It is annoying when it's not so obvious that they're immune to certain things.

Your second bit sounds like Onlive. As for the £20 ($30 for you US) "TV Game" concept, I'm in favour. There's plenty of games priced around that point on Steam, but not so much on consoles. And I think we do need more. Not every game needs a $40million budget and to sell millions. There are many titles that would be more appropriately priced at £20 instead of £40. Sports titles like FIFA I think would be a big one. A fair chunk of those Move titles too.And I'd have other examples too but looking through I can't yet see much that could do with a cheaper release. I did notice GAME still has True Crime up for pre-order

It's kind of Off-topic but I'd agree 07-08 period was a much better period than the 09-10 period. Mirrors Edge 2 would of complimented some of the "different" FPS games hitting this year. Shame to not see it in the roster in favour of only developing BF3.

I guess that folder path you gave me isn't the only place it stores config files? Cos it did the exact same thing, load up in crapp-o-vision but have all the settings as if it's running at 1920*1080 with settings whacked up. At least the server browser was semi-fixed (I think for now it's a case of just don't hit refresh and at least that won't remove all the servers) Time to hit up the steam forums. Might ask if they plan on making an icon for those of us with monitors and OSes from the 21st century too. Duke Nukem 3D has a higher res icon (though that might be a GOG addition) Oh and if they ask any stupid retarded questions.... oh btw: Guest Passes n shiz. I noticed it earlier but assumed it'd always been there.

Yeah, in the "Other Styles" Box. I stuck it in the Forum Tips n Tricks place but seems I royally fucked that up when I rearranged my dropbox so I'm gonna go do some FTPing I think. edit: everything is fixed: http://board.pressxordie.com/topic/266-forum-tips-tricks/page__view__findpost__p__13227

The graphic settings. And it's not forgetting them, the settings are kept as evidence by the fact I go to graphic settings and it's sitting pretty with all my chosen choices I had input. It just refuses to load up the game with all those settings in place. Use the default "I game on my 15" screen I kept from 1990". And no none of my config files are write protected. And if they were that'd wouldn't be my doing (who manually write protects game files?) (also who would call their stuff "Hostile Game"?) (Or go with a generic "Unreal Engine 3" folder?) I'll wipe them and give it a shot. I don't reckon it'll do much. Oh apart from fail that verify files thing it does on loading up the game. Wile I appreciate them balancing the game to take into account kb/m, they royally fucked up everything else. At least if they hadn't done the balancing I could completely write it off as a shitty port.

I wouldn't mind some kind of sequel. I reckon it wouldn't sell too bad. And they might tweak the controls a bit. The charity statement suggest they're writing it off as a failure before they even give it a shot. Did Mirrors Edge really sell that badly? Eurgh I hate that nothing gets green lit these days unless it's a "guaranteed" winner. No one takes chances anymore. Fucking lame.

If you get a desktop any modern one will do, just install a cheap $30 Graphics card and you're dandy. Should run more than TF2 aswell.

We're doing some maths in steam chat and: UK gets the PC version cheaper, but the console version (due to shifiting conversion rates between $=£) for more. Only $5 more console and $10 less on PC. It does make it less of an incentive to get the PS3 version. It's a $15 gap between the 2 in US. £15 in the UK ($25)

For those in the US the Jeapordy clip that started this thread? That episode is airing tonight http://www-943.ibm.com/innovation/us/watson/

Yeah like that thingy film...whatsiface. The one about the rich dude with a sled. Also if you take out the pee bar, 1-up, zelda music at start it quickly loses it's gamer vibes and you can easily see it for just being a very energetic romantic comedy aimed squarely at Generation Y. Which Battra is Gen X, so I can maybe see where the dislike comes from. I'd imagine my mum ain't so keen on it either. My sister however loves it. She's only a tidgy bit gamer (about the only game she's looking forward to this year is Portal 2, and most her steam games are bought by me apart for some Farm game). So I'm thinking it may be a Michael Cera thing for her. She's also a huge fan of the music too. I'm a fan of the visuals myself. Very rarely do folks completely throw out the window the concept of hiding or covering up their VFX work.

But were all of your games showing as 12 slots open? I can't take a fucking screenshot of the entire server list, I kind of guessed you'd get the idea with the first 20 something on the list. As for issues on my end, I got ports open so it shouldn't be a failure to connect. (also I remember a certain FPS on PC a couple years back getting the piss taken out of it for requiring you to open ports for MP, seems MNC got let off on that, but I think the other game got more of a grilling for being that particular game and it's community manger declaring dedicated servers too complex) Also both me and ethan at the very least have the issue of it not remembering your settings on launch.
-
No I'm upset it showed every single server as having 12 slots free, going back to the old beta days of having to fucking click on every single server till you found one that actually had open slots. I wasn't up with playing that game anymore. It was after I hit refresh that it went down to 3 then 2 then 1.

Not really. Not everyone who subscribes to the Gregorian calender is Christian, and on top of that those who don't use Gregorian calender tend not to for religious reasons. So, in this multi-cultural free communication world of ours, it kinda helps to go with a neutral ground and BCE/CE fills the gap. That'd be why it's system of choice for the UN. Also there's no dispute on when CE started (since it's not really hinged on much), whereas even today Christian scholars still debate on when exactly "anno domino" was. Still when using a dating system founded on the movement of planetary bodies through space it's a bit odd to attach on the end the religious naming scheme from the religion that condemned the guy who dared suggest we might be going round the sun each year and not the other way around. Though I fear at this point we may be encroaching onto a different thread.... Anywho toodle pip I'm off for a bit.

Yeah I've still got the DS library to chew through. The price, increased price of games and the fact I don't care of 3D on the handheld (since I'll more than likely be turning it off to save battery life, and it only being a small tidgy screen making it kind of pointless over 3D on a nice big monitor/TV) It's also not very ambitious. It's a natural bump in DS tech specs with a nub added n 3D screen. Apart from that it's pretty much the same thing. Whereas the NGP would only be on par with that if it only added an extra thumb stick. Instead it added considerably more than that. Just up to now no word on price, which could be a huge turn off. also hoping for strong word on the PS3/NGP connectivity. They had a play with it on PSP but the NGP is coming out after the PS3 so can be tailored to suit rather than cramming functionality into the PSP years down the line.

Well it's not so much America is "wrong" that they're being needlessly awkward. There's no reason to use that date format and it makes day to day contact, trade, communications etc needlessly complex with additional steps that shouldn't really have to be there. As for the whole millennial stuff I prefer to use BCE/CE. Less complicated. edIt: @Hooty: And? It's not like they'll beat us twice. You seen their recent track record?

Why are you waiting 'til the games release to start building up the relationships? Start it during development. Get folks interested and part of it. Open Betas, bonuses for guys with you from the start. As for DRM, some are good but a fair chunk are pretty bad. Steam is interesting in that it combines DRM and the relationship part. As beef and many others will say Steam isn't that intrusive. And it's about the only DRM that comes with additional features for the end user beyond just saying they have paid money for the game. Anyway the post didn't necessarily dismiss the idea of having DRM, just that if it's cracked or whatever, don't worry about it. Instead of focusing your limited resources and efforts in fighting pirates which will both drive you mad and you may as well go stand at the beach n hold the tides at bay for all the good it'll do, you should instead focus on providing more of a community and positive relationship with customers. Which will both earn you good word of mouth and build up a customer base for your sequel or next game. Which second time around you may find some of the pirates pick up your game too. Some of this isn't even much to do with piracy, it's just kind of some common sense mantra that'd be nice to see more often in the industry. Don't take the audience for granted, don't treat them as a number on the accounting sheets, don't stress over pirates more than the customers. As for Ubisofts DRM? Getting hold of PC numbers is like drawing blood from a stone, but I'd guess the fact they stripped back on it's harshness a bit suggests sales might not of been as expected. (the way these things often go I'd guess the piracy rates were higher than before too) @Beefy: tbh DRM very rarely stops a game going up for pirate. So DRM or not it's not going to increase or decrease the amount of copies that are pirated. All it means is there's a couple less steps required when installing the pirated game. Just means the legit game also has less hoops to go through. Err maybe better wording would be: Whether your game has DRM or not, all games up on torrents are DRM-free regardless. So I can't see it being a factor in how many times your game is pirated. However I would imagine games with heavy DRM, like Ubi games, having higher than normal downloads just because folks pirating out of spite, or getting a DRM-free copy that can run.

I'll agree the Japanese method is the best for file organization. I use it from time to time if I'm making multiple versions of a file, just because computers read words --> direction and numbers <--- direction. However in a human to human usage 99% of the time you only need to know the date. Unless you have the memory of a goldfish you don't need to be told what month it is every single day of the month. If you want to know the date them normal usage you just need to read 14/02/2011. But in US usage you got a bit more to get to the 14 02/14/2011. And the places that use YYYY/MM/DD read <--- way anyway so they're getting same benefit as the normal method. How'd Americans even say 02/14/2011 in regular speech anyway? For it's the fourteenth day of the second month twenty eleven. Or just fourteenth of February, since we tend to not forget the year 2 months in. Still the biggest sign the whole mm/dd/yyyy thing makes jack all sense is that the only country that uses it is US. (Canada grey cos it favours both) Here's a map: edit: Here's a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Date_format_by_country (stupid Wikipedia n their love of svg's.
