Those are very similar to the symptoms I had. Only mine would freeze while doing anything at all. I know how frustrating it is. : \ Have you tried checking your event logs?

Yeahhhhhhhhh, buddy. Congratulations, FLD! Wish I had a solution for your freezing. Mine ended up being awful 460 drivers (and lack of proper support on behalf of Nvidia). I've only purchased one game during the Steam sale thus far. It's only $4 and I've been meaning to get it for some time now.
