Just tried an RPG on iPhone called Ash which I got free as part of a free weekend a while ago. It's trying to be a SNES FF so hard and yet it doesn't live up to it. Really not liking the combat system.

It's worth setting up to play it for it's excellent soundtrack. Of course you could just go on youtube, but you know what I mean.

One could argue the staying power of the Disgaea series and it's ilk show that there is, however niche, a market for a good old-fashioned, ATB grindfest RPG.
