  1. Red Harvest is by Dashiel Hammett as well. It's about a character known only as The Continental Operative (based on Hammett's time as a Pinkerton Detective) who arrives in town to meet a man who gets murdered before that can take place. The Op discovers the underlying corruption in the town and decides to stir it up by turning all the gangs against one another, while trying to stay alive (and clean) himself. Raymond Chandler, the author of The Big Sleep, was heavily influenced by Hammett. The similarities between Philip Marlowe and Sam Spade are also supported by the fact that Bogart fit both characters in film adaptations.
  2. Truth be told, I've not read any Chandler (I have my eye on a Kindle collection I may snap up after giving A Game of Thrones a try). Only read Hammett. Love the film version of The Big Sleep and I hear the book gets into the more gritty details (although with a bit more homophobia). I'd recommend Red Harvest as it was also a precursor to films like Yojimbo, which inspired A Fistful Of Dollars and Miller's Crossing...and Last Man Standing. I felt The Maltese Falcon kinda dragged and the 'kicker' was a bit disappointing even if the Sam Spade character is cool. As for the stuff you just mentioned. Can't believe I forgot Cormac McCarthy. Definitely want to give him a read.
  3. I think the second episode of S1 was my favourite of that series (only because I wasn't too fond of what they did with a certain character in the third episode). I found it an amusing little yarn, with some good interplay. Baskerville one had its moments but was pretty bad overall.
  4. Finished reading Red Harvest and it really was quite good. Onto those 'Songs of Icy Fire' books or whatever, that I seem to recall someone mentioning. Their name escapes me now... Also tried a sample of Theft of Swords by Michael J. Sullivan and that seemed pretty good, lighter reading. Might get that afterwards.
  5. Wait until I tell them that the sonic screwdriver is a deus ex machina! I bet they never knew!
  6. Eh, I've been called worse... EDIT: The automatic space after quotes is gone again. AAAAAAAAGH!
  7. I did. But there are quite a few prerequisites.
  8. As long as you enjoyed it, you should reaaally like the next two. And then episode one of the second series (personal favourite). ...and then possibly the last episode.
  9. Hmm, I could take it or leave it. Their first single's usually the worst and not very representative though. Yeah, it must be that... Except that wasn't the case with the last album...
  10. If I'm honest, I thought the first episode of Sherlock was a little lacking. Mainly because I was thinking to myself, "It shouldn't take Sherlock Holmes to figure this one out..." Although, I found episodes two and three jolly good romps for the most part. Also, we don't count them as films, technically. Just a series, but instead of 6 x 30 minutes episodes (the usual case) it is 3 x 90 minutes. That's 90 extra minutes of entertainment though!
  11. Most my replies will be from Mike Myers films now, it seems...
  12. Ruffalo did a good job. And Hulk sort of 'stole' most scenes he was in, which was pretty cool. Not sure Norton would've worked in the film, but I never saw him play Banner. Like Bana's Banner, maybe he might have seemed a bit too intense here. As for that secret, personally, that line didn't quite 'sing' like some of the others. Can't fault it though. Just so many great lines.
  13. The Avengers. Amazing. That is how you make a blockbuster film. Never saw Iron Man 2, and I actually really liked the Black Widow stuff. Although her 'motivation', stated when talking to Hawkeye was a bit odd and sort of out of nowhere. Then again, I don't really know much about the character. And, considering all the characters, I wasn't expecting Thor to have the funniest line and delivery.
  14. Stay safe, Dean. Don't get murdered!

  15. Never actually listened to that station. I spent most my time listening to Radio Broker...partly because Juliette Lewis has a hot voice.
