  4. Jesus, I can't believe people are arguing about Spore. That game was fucking terrible. Well, I like it until it hits the creature stage. My 2 cents is that I never considered games like, say, Escape Velocity or the interstellar travel portions of Mass Effect to be space sims. Space sims always seemed to be more about management of a single ship as if you were the pilot. That is, space sims, in my mind, are flight simulators involving piloting a starship, like Independence War. I guess I'd call Spore's space section an adventure or exploration game rather than a sim. But whatever, everyone can have his or her own idiosyncratic understanding of game genres.
  5. Yeah, I might ask that. Not sure if he'll answer everything I ask though. But I will try. I'm going to be talking about these things with him as well. Most probably the interview will be based around him, his "predictions" and other stuff, rather than asking him about how he thinks X game will sell, etc. That might also be involved but most probably will be based around what people actually want to know...at least from what I'm hearing. Sounds good to any of you? Or be more traditional? Oh, I was just answering the general question of what, exactly, Pachter does for a living at Wedbush Securities. Most folks in the gaming community don't seem to have a clear idea of Pachter's role.
  6. I don't understand the Ash hate to be honest. The usual argument I hear is, "lol racist" but I imagine that comes from people who don't read the back story to Mass Effect (you know, that one bit where turians show up and start blowing up human ships without so much as a chance to surrender?). That or they are people who specifically believe in Kumbaya Theory (and she doesn't subscribe to that). Sure, I read the backstory, but I still dislike Ashley. But only a smidgeon more than I dislike Kaiden, mostly because Ash distrusts aliens and several of my Sheps' closest friends are aliens. And if anyone has a problem with Garrus or Wrex, they have a serious problem with Commander Shepard.
  7. Pachter is an investment analyst who specializing in video game companies. He advises clients on whether buying stock in video game companies (or investing in them in other ways) is a smart move or not. He gets catered to by those companies, because they want high stock prices. There are many people like him for many other industries. I generally consider him and his ilk to be hype men rather than beings of substance.
  8. I dunno why, exactly, but whenever I read a Gawker blog headline, I just want to turn it into a lame "your mom" type joke. Not even jokes, per se, just inserting "your mom" in place of whatever thing the article is about. Like: "So How Close Are We to Unlocking Your Mom?"

  11. Good question. "Animated feature" and "animated short" are also acceptable.
  12. "Cartoon," "'toon," "anime," "animoo," "Japanimation," "Funimation," "Trickfilm," and "Japanime" are all vulgar and offensive. The only correct term is "animated film." Every other term is imprecise and politically loaded.
  13. There is something delicious about folks correcting my comments on Kotaku stories about the law and videogames. It's best when the correction is pedantic and patronizing, bonus points when the poster refers to a solitary law class he took in undergrad.

Let me guess, it was from the "Hotz settles out of court" thing? Because all over the internet ignorant people come from all over the world and make a convention of sorts as to who can spout off the biggest, most rancid bullshit every time that issue came up. Thank god that's over.

  14. Ethan has the general outline correct, but students at high school have a different level of freedom of speech than adults, depending on the state. The US Constitution and Supreme Court recognize limits on student expression. But a state constitution may restore full protections; a state constitution may generally give folks more freedoms than the fed Constitution, but may not give people less protection (because that would violate the federal Constitution). That is, some states (like my state of origin, Iowa) give students the full protection that adults receive. Others do not. So the teacher may be able to just tell the kid to wait till he's eighteen or class is over and then he'd be free to say whatever bullshit he wants.
  15. Yes, there was the concept of setting up simple combat scripts through a "tactics" menu in both DA:O and FFXII. But the combat feels way different in both. Maybe not on console, but if you played DA:O on console, I feel bad for you son; I got 99 problems but being a drooling console dudebro ain't one.
  16. Ian McDonald, Charles Stross, Ken MacLeod and Iain M. Banks, to name a few. Great modern sci-fi authors. Now, back to Mass Effect: I hear ME3 features a return of RPG elements, especially regarding character customization and weapon customization. Fuck yes, dudes. Fuck yes! Hopefully it's not a return to the clusterfuck that was ME1's skill progression and inventory.
  17. Well, it makes sense. Bioware is a Canadian. Also, it proves the theory that all good sci-fi comes from Canada. Case-and-point: Stargate: SG-1. And anything that gives us Amanda Tapping AND Tricia Helfer is awesome. Stargate SG-1 is good sci-fi if you're on drugs or a child, I suppose. I also find Canada's resident Sci-Fi author, Robert J. Sawyer, to be a little overrated. I do like their Second Seat sci-fi author, Peter Watts, though his work on video game novelizations has me furrowing my brow. The best sci-fi writing comes from Britain and, more specifically, Scotland. The concentration of great sci-fi authors in Scotland and Northern England is astounding. But I do love Bioware's relentless Canadianism; when you register games or log into their site, the little flag next to the English language selection is Canadian. A wonderful dig at both Americans/Brits and the Quebecois. Tres magnifique!
  18. Okay, I've been on a bit of a dungeon crawling spree and need to know which game I should focus on next: Dungeon Siege or Temple of Elemental Evil? Mind you, I've just finished a run through both Icewind Dale games.

So many games are a step down from Icewind Dale. :( I'd go with Dungeon Siege, though. It'll get you refreshed for III, at the very least.

      peteer01

Dungeon Siege...if just for the music. :-) (Might just be me, but I really enjoyed the music for that game.)

      Mr. GOH!

Alright, dungeon siege it is. I remember enjoying it more than I enjoyed TOEE, anyway.

Or maybe I'll be perverse and see if I can get that Pool of Radiance abomination to run on Win7...

  19. Nintendo gets a pass because they make children's games and kids are relatively uncritical and shovelware-tolerant, whether they're actual children or childlike adult Ninty fans. It's like panning Dora the Explorer or Blue's Clues for lacking complex narratives; those shows, like Nintendo games, are made for people whose brains are still growing. They're not for mature adults who have fully come into their mental faculties. But another trope that needs to go is shooting gallery FPS games. I fully expect MW4 to be 3D and on-rails, because that's the sort of bullshit single player FPS games seem to be developing towards.
  20. Male Shep has a stronger Canadian accent. It's all in the vowels. Once you hear it, you'll notice it all the time. Shep is a Canuck, born and bred.
  21. I love the fact that, no matter which gender you choose, the Earther Shep escaped from the vile and brutal gangs of the blasted hellscape of urban Canada. Or perhaps Canadian pronunciations somehow rose to prevalence for World English. Earth is truly fucked if Canada's turned into an urban hellscape, is all I can say. Oh, and for the record, renegade-ish FemShep all the way. Male Shep just sounds like a big ol' corn-fed douche bag any way you slice it. My FemShep is a tough cookie who makes the hard decisions and doesn't suffer fools or goddamned space racists. She's yelled down two Krogans, chewed out the founder of the Blue Suns and slapped the shit out of the same reporter on two occasions. She's cold hung up the phone on the Council and the Illusive Man. She's found doomed love twice in the arms of aliens. But she's saved her crew from certain death twice and stolen the most advanced ship in the galaxy. She's not just FemShep, she's the only Shep that matters and she will do her duty when the Reapers come a-knockin'.
  22. I plan on playing the witcher 2, if you're talking about new games.
  23. Something deep in my soul yearns for the return of tactical RPGs, like those of the Infinity Engine days of old.

Icewind Dale III would be awesome. In the meantime, I'm happy enough replaying BG2 and PST. Here's an idea, if there's enough of us with BG2 or IWD, how about we multiplay?

    3. WTF

      WTF

There is one advantage to being a guy and that is from the time you're 25 till you hit between 40-55 (depending on your genes) you're going to look the same with minimal amounts of ageing. Past that depends on the individual.

I'm also 29, we can be proud of it.... maybe.
