  1. You live in MN? Where at? I lived in Minneapolis for three years and loved every minute of it. But it sure does snow more than plenty. We're gearing up for a big storm here in NYC. That means something like 10 inches. I'm just glad I don't have to drive anywhere. It can get pretty bad here, too, but nowhere near as aggressively bone-chilling as it does in the midwest.
  2. If you look at how he phrases a lot of his 'stories' there's usually an inflammatory angle. Can't really be bothered to look for loads but here's a minor example: http://kotaku.com/5728225/people-are-lining-up-for-hours-to-see-the-3ds-and-play-a-13-year+old-game He hasn't been as bad as of late, but he definitely loves shit-stirring. Heyyy... Ah. I think I'm generally sympathetic to his negative angles on Ninty stuff so I don't mind. I will remember his poor review of New Vegas until my dying day. Ah, it's chill, HH. I kid about the whole typo thing.
  3. Tim Rogers writes like a second-year creative writing major at a middle tier private liberal arts school who thinks he's the second coming of Hunter S. Thompson when really he's a vacuous and fast-talking pseudo-hipster who manages to sound like a stoner without the aid of drugs at all. I think he must be a friend of one of the Kotaku editors, because even his best pieces need some serious editing. I hope he isn't paid by the word. Edit: I like Totilo, too. I even have a nickname for him: Steve Totes. He's all right in my book. I'm neutral on Plunkett; how is he trollish? I don't know what the fuck you're talking about, Double H.
  4. Just thought I should make a thread for folks to vent their spleens about chicanery at Kotaku. This article by Ashcraft is what prompted me to make this thread, specifically, the misuse of the word "adverse" when he should have written "averse." But at least he doesn't let loose with one of his gibberish sentences. I mean, Jesus, folks; the man's writing is an ongoing indictment of Cornell's journalism program. Edit: Poll updated to reflect staffing changes at Kotaku. Gawker may change, but this thread will remain as a place to whine, complain and rage at Kotaku.
  5. I think we're all bozos on this bus.

  6. So off-topic is the appropriate place to bitch about Brian Ashcraft's writing? Because I sometimes just gotta vent that the man who can barely write coherent English has two books published and a blogging gig. It just ain't right.
  7. I think the Pack a quite capable of overcoming Atlanta, though you guys shouldn't have much trouble with the Hawks. If the Bears go on to the Superbowl, they'd better motherfucking defeat the goddamned Patriots.
  8. The Packers: Fuck Yes. That is all.
  9. It's "Mr." because all well-groomed gentleman are taught to lead with their sex and station, so as to avoid any social class confusion on the thoroughfare. "Mr." also indicates an expectation of civil distance, as opposed to the rough discourse between people who do not use honorifics. "Goh" because it is short, simple and easy to remember. It also is homophonous with the well-known word "go," itself the quintessential action verb. It bespeaks movement, activity, and vigor. It is a powerful syllable. It's capitalized because it is pronounced loudly, a bold declaration of a name! The exclamation point is both to emphasize the suggested volume, but also to turn the quotidian "Goh" into the imperative "GOH!" It becomes a life-affirming command: "Go forth and be!" Which is darn good advice. In the alternative, I was maybe just a little bit drunk out of my mind one night in 2004 and I needed a new name for Ramza in FFT and picked Mr. GOH! because it was "weird, man."
  10. Is this where we're supposed to drunk talk or what?

Suddenly reminded of Ted Kennedy. I chuckled.

  11. My desktops always have ATI/AMD cards. It just always makes financial sense in my sensible, mid-range builds. My laptops always have nVidia cards and I can't complain.

  13. EA's scheme doesn't bother me because I tend to buy games new anyway. The first used game I bought in years was RDR for 360. Then I bought Undead Nightmare through Live, so Rockstar ended up getting my money anyway. But I dunno if I like the idea of every game having a $10 online component for used copies. I rented AC:B for a couple weeks and really enjoyed access to multiplayer. I can see why it bothers folks who buy a lot of used games. But I'm also sympathetic to publishers and developers trying to get some money from the used games market.
  14. I was thinking of Blizzard and "Starcrack" specifically (Blizzard Entertainment Inc v. Justin Marshall et al). Starcrack emulated Battle.net's servers so that people with pirated copies of StarCraft 2 could play the multiplayer before the game was officially out in stores. The interesting thing about many Blizzard cases is that reverse-engineering the server software is only one issue (and could still relate to piracy with contributory or vicarious infringement). Blizzard's reliance on the DMCA has also lead to further interpretations of cases that are very relevant to copyright law and piracy, like MAI Systems Corp. v. Peak Computer, Inc. and Sun Microsystems, Inc. v. Microsoft Corporation. I didn't realize that the Starcrack case has had any decisions handed down yet. What was the court's relevant analysis? I'm interested in lost sales calculations made by the trial court, particularly. And, yup, the holdings MAI Systems and Sun v. Microsoft are modified by the subsequent adoption of the DMCA. I think it's par for the course to mention them in briefs and distinguish them heavily/ assert they still hold, depending on what side is writing the brief. I remember MAI Systems as being a hoary old, but occasionally problematic, chestnut even when I took Copyright Law a couple years ago. The DMCA anticircumvention provision should be headed to SCOTUS sometime in the next few terms (if it isn't already); my sense is that there is a split in circuits on how it should be interpreted.
  15. NES SNES N64 PS1 PS2 Xbox 360 PC I only have access to my PC and 360 at the moment; the rest are in storage at my Mom's place. I do play my PS1 and some of my PS2 games on emulator, though.
  16. Wait, which Blizzard cases? Because the one I'm familiar with is Blizzard v. bnetd, about which there was some controversy. It also was about reverse-engineered server software, so perhaps you're talking about cases which are more on-point for the whole "how many sales are lost to piracy" question.
  17. It's Playboy Kennedy with Real Smoking Cigarillo Action, not Cuban Missile Crisis President Kennedy with Real Concerned Eeyebrows Action. That's lighthearted, isn't it?
  18. It's cool that it's been moved; I just didn't want people thinking I was seriously trying to troll. I started up a less sarcastic replacement thread. I guess folks around here just aren't familiar enough with my ardent PC fanboyism to realize that the whole thread was a joke from the start.
  19. I think the runaway success of Steam sales both demonstrate the viability of the PC platform and some of the bigger pricing mistakes made by big developers.
  20. PC gaming is alive and well indeed. This thread is to post evidence against that tired old argument that PC gaming is on its last legs. I suppose the strongest evidence is the huge success of several MMO's and PC-only franchises. But this thread is for you, the posters, to present your evidence.
  21. *Sigh* That wasn't my intention at all. I thought others would join in on the sarcastic "PC gaming is dead because [insert spurious reason that actually demonstrates PC gaming's continued vitality]", but I suppose I was, uh, too subtle or something.
  22. I just realized that a lot of the lingo and cadences that make up modern bro-speak are remarkably similar to the voices of the TMNT in their 90's cartoon incarnation.

  23. You don't, like, know for sure Sony is evil and that Valve isn't, man. I mean, c'mon; the teasing yet vaporware-esque status of Episode 3 is a crime against humanity, or at least that portion of humanity who really dig the Half-Life games.
  24. Steam is just Xbox Live or the PSN without the totally tubular features of those two services.
