Anyone ever watch Interviews with Monster Girls?
I recently watched it after having some clips appear in my Recommended section of YouTube. I was rather hesitant to watch any because "Monster Girls" tends to be a ecchi trope in anime. However, the show is far from perverted and is instead wholesome and amazingly charming. It boils down to a show about a biology teacher trying to learn more about the lives of these "demi-humans" or "demis" as they like to be called. He's a straight up nice guy who looks out for his students and respects their personal boundaries.
These girls are also not supernatural in their "monster girl" aspect. Though it's hard to fully believe it's scientifically possible by mere biology, these girls have a genetic mutation. Being a vampire is more about having physical enhancements and handicaps to light and blood. A dullahan (think headless horseman) is essentially handicapped as they must carry their head and be careful not to suffer any head trauma. Again, these girls aren't undead, but living, breathing human beings. There's also an ice woman (Japanese folklore Yuki-onna) who has a lower body temp and under stress can make the atmosphere colder around herself.
And there's my favorite character who's a succubus, but not for the reason you think! Succubi are basically women who have strong pheromones that cause arousal to surrounding men. It can't be controlled at will however and efforts have to be made on the succubus' part to not become a public hazard. Something like living alone and far enough from others because even sleeping men can get, well, wet dreams if a succubus is near by. The one we watch believes she can't ever have love because any relationship she'd have would be "fake" since she has such a strong pull with any straight man. So she wears a tracksuit and continues her career as a high school math teacher, where eventually she meets the biology teacher and other demis.
There's only one season, but in October there will be a second and I'm looking forward to it. Again, it's a very charming and downright human anime that explores these girls' lives because even though it's unusual, it's also relatable to anyone who is different outside their circumstance.
