I thought I would post about the FLCL episode since I got to watch it a few days ago through the DVR on PlayStation Vue. Though that has some issue which you can read up on in the PlayStation 4 thread.
So it's a bit bold of them to show the first episode of Season 3 rather than Season 2, though for the most part these seasons are meant to be self-contained. However, I thought there might be some character progression in terms of Haruko. That while FLCL was primarily about Naota and his development, Haruko was the Mary Poppins character. A prominent supporting character who gets the wheels turning for all of the crazy shenanigans. Granted Haruko is more so Chaotic Neutral and isn't thinking of Naota's best interest in her pursuit of Atomsk's N.O. power.
Still, it's a amazingly unique coming of age story, if not part slice of life since we're given context to those around Naota in his life. I bring this up because Alternative appears to be focusing on the slice of life aspect with coming of age as a looming undertone. Kana, a 17-year old high school girl, is the main character and she has a group of close female friends. They hang out a lot and do appear to enjoy their life. Yet, the undertone is that Kana won't be a young adult forever, but an actual adult very soon.
While the episode promises this potential, it's rather laid back compared to the OVA's first episode. Nothing is too crazy until the near end. This episode I believe is meant to setup Kana and her group of friends; to establish their friendship and how they appear on a surface level. I expect that for the rest of the episodes, we're going to explore each of these girls and how adulthood can sometimes mean going your separate ways, or just facing who you are and what you want to be for the rest of your life.
There are quite a bit of references to the OVA, which are neat, but don't try to directly tie themselves to Kana's story. Well, at least for now, but I don't expect anyone aside from Haruko to be a significant character in either Season 2 or 3. On Haruko, I was honestly surprised that when she was introduced, it was so casual. If you haven't seen it yet, it's so drastically opposite of her first appearance in the OVA. So again, maybe something does happen to Haruko in Season 2 (Progressive), but as far as we can tell she's still messing with N.O. power.
