In the music kickstarters I've supported, they've put out the CD by themselves, without a label. Which means all of the profits, all of the creative control. The last artist I supported has had about 5 albums so far but he wanted to release one on his own for once. I'm all for the self-supporting musician. Enemies List is one of my favorite labels. You keep framing this in terms of business. Why? Plenty of this is art. You know plenty of people put art before money. Interest rates? No proof of demand? What bank would give an independent musician a small business loan? They'd just laugh at them. That's the case for many of these projects. It's showing that the demand is there. Another example is Indie Game: The Movie. It seemed like a good idea at first... but would people get behind it? Turns out, people wanted to see it, so much they successfully funded two Kickstarters and of course the movie came out and it's great. That's what's happening with these indie games. These aren't just any indie games, we're seeing a resurgence in genres thought dead or near dead. It's a gauge of interest. I'm a broke worthless 20 something and I have no problem supporting these things every once in a while. Gotta stick with what you believe in. Plus, dropping $15 on a good cause just means not eating out for a night or getting a cup of coffee for a week. Big whup. I'd like to think that I'm a keen enough person to only support Kickstarters that look like they'll actually work out. I have to be convinced to put my money into something. I'm not very easy to convince.

Still calling it investment? Yeah, fuck "discussing" this with you. You're not capable of that.

Given the recent statistics about the DoubleFine Kickstarter most people didn't know about it before then that donated. 71% of people who donated to that were new to Kickstarter. I definitely see that reflected in this thread. I feel like I'm the old man of Kickstarter around these parts. Supporting videogames on it is the new concept to me. I've supported a few bands and a couple of other little things here and there... but games only recently.
-
What do you mean it's either? Who are you to decide that it's this black and white? Kickstarter itself has shades of grey represented by the pledge levels. On many levels you just donate money. Straight up. No gifts. No anything. You're ignoring the fact that Kickstarter is very much in the middle ground. It's a new concept. Something your mind seems to have trouble with.

See, it's stuff like calling it stupid where you're failing here. What makes it stupid? You can not do it yourself. I don't care. But calling it stupid is something else entirely. I'm investing time in this forum. This definition is far too basic for what we're talking about. Or rather, what you're talking about, because everyone else knows what they're doing with their money yet you seem to want to control them.

Both require permission on both ends. Why bitch about something optional?

You can donate to things besides charities. You're just using whatever word you think will help your argument even though it doesn't apply. Previously it was risk. To go over the basics that you can't get through your thick head (who knows, maybe you're trolling) 1) You're not pre-ordering anything 2) You get your money back if the project isn't funded 3) It's likely in the ToS that people can be sued over this 4) There hasn't been a case (that I can think of) of people taking the money and running 5) Many of these projects would not exist if it wasn't for fan donations. You wouldn't get to the part of even having the choice to buy the game when it's out because it wouldn't exist. This isn't true for every Kickstarter of course but for many of them it is. Also I think things like giving the creators control is a very big positive of Kickstarter. It's something I support in all industries. You seem to be ignoring all of these aspects of it in your so-called "discussion." Really, if you want to have a discussion, you might want to actually respond to the specific things we're saying, instead of just yelling from your soap box.

There is no risk. It's a donation. Risk implies making money. Every single Kickstarter I've donated to I've gotten exactly what they've promised. Also, when the Kickstarter money isn't enough after meeting the goal, other people outside of Kickstarter invest in the project because obviously people are interested. So I really don't think it's "risky" at all. I will re-iterate that they only get the money if they can fully meet the goal. There is no halfway.
-
I never called it an investment. I was saying it's similar. Kickstarter is donation based but is centered around the idea of supporting a business/artist/whomever financially. So it has aspects of both donations and of investments. ...Who are you to judge people because the causes they donate to aren't "good enough"? Unless you're seriously trying to argue that kickstarter is not only "not good enough", but that it's actually bad. I really hope that's not what you're arguing. Which is followed by this bullshit response. ...why should we take you seriously again? Get the fuck out of this thread.
-
This is why they call it a donation. If you don't trust the person then don't give them your money. This is why it works better with people/organizations that are already established at what they do. Exactly. Sure, you can take the money and run on this project, but good luck getting anyone to buy anything from you ever again. What? You do know that people quite frequently invest in businesses they believe in right? This is the same concept except with such small amounts of money that you don't get any part of the business. You're donating to get something you want made. Either that, or your'e donating for other reasons such as supporting independent publishing, entrepreneurship, new ideas/creativity, etc. No one would donate to this PXOD kickstarter. It wouldn't gain any traction. Unless you set the fundraisining to $100 or something. No idea what the minimum is.
-
It's a donation + a gift. Remember that. Also, Kickstarter is a fad? I've been using it for ages. It's just now catching on with video games. Also, if you really care about a project, then why not throw a bunch of money at it? If you really want to support the people on the project then this is a great way to do it. Plus, if your'e unsure about if they'll reach funding (which is true for most of these) then there's that benefit as well. Also remember that they only get the money if they reach the goal.

It's 2012. Quit hotlinking. Also, joke?

You can buy stuff with a dollar. Also helpful for tips. The penny on the other hand...

With this and new World's End Girlfriend this year Japan has some great stuff coming up. -
Whoa, what is this GPGPU? Also yeah, it's a shame Physx never took off on consoles. Bad timing.

They're walking, talking, human sized turtles, that know martial arts. The names are the last thing that need to be explained. -
It's only controversial because it's Gawker. Engadget relies entirely on third parties and no one is bitching about that. Oh no, they're making you log in using the most used services in the world. If you don't want to be tracked then make a throw away account. I don't see what's so hard about that. I don't think you understand what Gawker has done. You don't log in via Gawker anymore. You have to use one of the services so security is through them rather than Gawker handling it. Hell, didn't they get compromised a while back? Anyways, you're assuming tracking is going on here. Frankly, I don't see why it matters. Even if you aren't using any of the services Google is still tracking you just by going to the site. You use Ghostery, you know what I mean. You are always being tracked. Always.
-
Yeah, use ghostery. I use that in combination with no script. Why word as "jumping to their defense" in the first place? They are not the first site to require something like this. People just love to bitch about Gawker. If you value your privacy, then do things to protect it, instead of just bitching. You do have a choice here. Make a fake account if you really give that much of a shit.

In AC:B easy became repetitive as all you had to do was just chain everything and you would tear through 20 guys at once. What was the term from Kotaku they used earlier... "gameplay loop." Same shit. All the time. Slightly incremental changes.
-
It doesn't connect to FB (or any of the other apps) this way. It's similar to how Engadget connects, just with less options for services. You can revoke the permissions, change your privacy settings so no one sees it, etc. With 95% of apps on installation I make my privacy settings "only me."
-
Well I'm of the belief that tablets are fairly pointless and shouldn't be purchased at all. =D Maybe as a laptop replacement for people who just use google and facebook.
-
Either way, do I care that FB, Twitter, or Google can see me troll idiots on Gawker websites? Not really.

What are you reading right now?

Most of what I've seen from people think that the 3rd book is crap and rushed feeling with a shite ending. -
^Agreed. AC2 was when combat was at its best. The linking thing really made combat too easy in the games after. Amongst all of your other tools and resources.
