  1. One of my lifelong dreams is to see the Earth from space. (Not mocking, that's actually true.) I'm not sure whether that's going to be feasible within my lifetime or not. Ideally I would like to set foot on another celestial body (Moon would work, Mars would be better), but I'm reasonably sure that won't be feasible.
  2. *Edit* - Here's the issue I take with the "anyone can make it" attitude: Yes, anyone can do it, but not everyone can. The system simply would not work without people in shitty-ass, low-paying jobs, so I don't see what's so wrong with trying to increase their standard of living.
  3. I usually find subtitles distracting for the first few minutes, but after that it's like they're not even there.
  4. Yeah, even when I'm wearing headphones I usually leave subtitles on because games often have just atrocious sound design.
  5. Yay all my parts shipped! Hopefully I'll get them Saturday. Going shopping for a bike and a new mattress in Wichita (ooh, the big city...), then when we get back I can have a new project.
  6. Over here release-date delivery is $0.99. I know the shipping distances are shorter over there so Amazon stuff tends to arrive faster, but the way they do it here is that if you preorder and choose release-date delivery they ship it the day before release, overnight shipping, so it arrives on release day, whereas if you choose free shipping then they don't ship it out until the actual release day and they just use standard shipping instead of overnight.
  7. In my experience Amazon's estimated arrivals are always several days later than the actual arrival. Do they not offer release date shipping over there?
  8. No one's saying that access to public transportation, food stamps, and government-subsidized healthcare are the determining factors of standard of living, but they are factors. Disposable income is another factor, as is job opportunities, or access to education. Just because one factor doesn't apply to everyone does not mean that it is not a factor at all.
  9. I think with the advent of FXAA and whatever ATI's equivalent is called we're going to start seeing more anti-aliasing on future consoles because it can be applied as a shader effect and doesn't require nearly as much processing power. I agree those, effects like antialiasing, texture filtering, normal/bump maps, etc go a lot farther for me in determining how "good" a game looks than poly counts do.
  10. With stuff like not having to hard-code lighting on objects, instead just letting the lighting engine handle it. The more stuff you can do in real-time the less work it takes from humans hard-coding it. Additionally they can see the results of any changes in real time without having to wait for it to render. Also stuff like making scripting way easier with visual, flow-chart-based coding rather than actually have to write it out in a scripting language.
  11. It's based on the fact that the right always seems to oppose government programs to help them have food and not die.

  13. And from reading the article it sounds like a lot of what Unreal 4 is designed to do is to streamline development some teams don't have to keep ballooning.
  14. When you write a comment at the top of the box there's a chain with a green plus sign, if you highlight the text you want to make into a link and then click that you can paste your URL into the box that pops up and it will turn the text into a hyperlink.
  15. I find that when I can hear then it's more immersive to have no subtitles, but when I can't hear it's much much worse than subtitles. I always turn subtitles on if possible. Speaking about games in general, not DD specifically.
  16. I think part of it was that the videos I saw never showed them running, only sprinting, so I thought it was the regular run animation and that it looked retarded. If it's sprint that's more okay.
  17. I watched [Rec] with subtitles and didn't think it spoiled the tension.
  18. Yeah, they tried to make it look like a comedy in trailers to capitalize on Johnny Depp's recent movies.
  19. A cheaper, larger HDD already appeared in my e-mail inbox this morning.
  20. The Wikipedia page on transportation in Norrbotten County makes it sound very very similar to Kansas: Sounds the same right down to the speed limits, distances involved, and prevalence of freight trains but lack of passenger trains.
  21. Okay, yes, someone who has access to private transportation probably has a higher standard of living than someone in a comparable area who has no choice but to use public transportation, I doubt anyone would dispute that. The reason access to public transportation is considered a factor in (not a determination of) standard of living is because people who lack access to private transportation but do have access to public transportation generally have a higher standard of living than those who have access to neither.
  22. I can agree with that, with the minor caveat that I don't think consumers can know in most cases whether content was cut or not (as a separate issue from the fact that cutting content to sell separately is objectively bad, which I 100% agree with), and that I don't have any problem with online passes.
  23. I wish I could, but it's silver only. For the games I mean, obviously the free month would be silver only.
