Once it's done and released, it's just regular linux so yeah unless they've ballsed something up on purpose you should be able to install it the same way you would any other client. Given that only one of the four main features of SteamOS has only just this week entered beta phase and the rest are all waiting to be seen SteamOS is likely not ready right now for them to just be hitting the launch button on. They've also said it'll be game announcements over the coming weeks, which runs alongside the timeline for getting people on the Steam Machines beta, where it largely makes sense they'd release the beta for it all at the same time. Of everything, given it's the only thing developers are talking about that I've seen so far, the controller seems to be the only thing mostly cooked.

All three. It's even the big ass words they have on the home page: http://store.steampowered.com/livingroom/ And the in-home streaming is: So not just client to client. The beta application process closes near the end of October, given time to then process those then distribute machines and get feedback and go into full development, and valve time on top of this, 2014 is looking pretty solid target for them right now. Even the start of this year at CES they were quite adamant we won't get this this year.

They're coming out in 2014.

YOU CAN UPGRADE CATS?!?!?! *dashes to the shop*

So IT Crowd? Good wrap up, very self-referential which slightly was a bit too much at times, but still good overall. Plenty of laugh out loud sections. One minor niggle would be the "womens slacks" for all of us sounded like "womens snacks". Kinda figured it was leading up to a joke about like cereal bars or something.

Gotta say though, it's one nice high-res render. Sure don't know how it works but you know what every crook and cranny of the front looks like. Also MisterJack has a good point, it's unaccounted for:

I kinda wish they'd maybe gone through some use cases. They say it'll work with every game on Steam, but they haven't said how. As in it'll boot up? Or like it will work fine even if it was built explicitly with kb/m in mind? Cos I'm struggling to see how that'll be the case. Heck even with games built with controllers in mind I'm at a loss for a few on how it's expected to work. @Goh: What'd you think the past few pages or so of discussion was about?

Now I've not watched much Breaking Bad, just snippets of when housemate is watching it, but I'm pretty sure Aaron Paul is slimmer in it than he is here. He's not like fat, but his face is filled out. Also going from need for speed to another need for speed. Bit typecast eh?
-
Watched it today, was pretty decent. It'll be interesting to see where they're going with it. Extremis was a bit of a weird thing to go off, but I guess as you said it helps reinforce the tie with the larger marvel movie universe. Hopefully builds up something nice and solid and not being some freak of the week or just a vehicle to push the movies and keep them in your mind.

Well I've bought it now, so yeah I'm gonna give it a spin. But it's already lost major points in me not much caring for the concept to begin with, then big huge ones for not being Reus. It's a bit like unwrapping a Vii on xmas morning.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-09-25-inside-paradox-video-games-strangest-company Eurogamer done a decently large piece looking at PAradox. Maybe of interest to some of you.

I bought Proteus because it was a "pay what you want" type dealy-o and now I've got home and checked emails and been reminded of the fact I bought it. And I've gone and found out it wasn't what I thought it was. Which'd after some fishing about would be Reus. Bum. Reus looked fun, whereas Proteus is the game everyone is bitching about not being a game.

You have a 0.001% chance of getting in btw. (Not gonna stop me giving it a shot mind, not like it takes much effort, and hey. Free PC) Seems the last post is going to be about the controller. Given they've yet to cover properly how they expect the other 90% of their games to run on SteamOS, they can I guess at least cover how they'll get all the games that require keyboard to run on it too. Cos 24 games isn't much.

My brain has decided to be a a bit active today: My grandma always says "don't start what you don't intend to finish". My grandma started a family.... I print out all of my jokes on perforated paper. Because they're tearable jokes.

http://youtu.be/nLwML2PagbY It's a Mercedes advert. With chickens, being danced by lab assistant type folks to Donna Summer. Pretty sure it goes in here.

http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/innovate/developers/minecraft-map-britain.html Ordnance Survey have knocked out a downloadable map of Britain for Minecraft. All 3.6GB of it. It's 50m3 per block mind, so not overly high resolution.

The minor under the hood additions Kepler brings couldn't be anything to do with it, given the timing of GTX600 series release with their likely internal intention to develop the Shield and Grid in future?
-
It could be, but given that we already know that when Nvidia get involved with games they tend to magically run better on GeForce GPUs it's quite likely that the requirement of specific Nvidia GPUS to stream games to thier Nvidia handheld is probably a bit more than just marketing ploy. Anywho I wrote some words. Probably not overly good words towards the end because a headache really began to set in and I wanted done. http://pressxordie.com/2013/09/23/who-is-steamos-for/

When FDS is pushing Nvidia Shield as a solution, a hardware based solution, as an example of streaming with next to no lag, then the GPU in question used is an issue because Nvidia shield requires a GTX650 or better GPU to run. And there's plenty of reasons why you cannot have a lag free experience of sending a streaming video game output across the network, certainly not one that simply hinges on "software".
-
I'm sure you'll have fun with console gaming for the foreseeable future. @TME/FDS: And when games built for next gen consoles hit what'll eventually be two year old GPUs the streaming will remain "perceptibly" lag-free? Also having the money to throw at a problem doesn't make it any less of a problem. Companies far richer and far better staffed than Valve still have plenty of problems. And Valve isn't exactly well known for thier great software either.
-
@FDS: Nvidia have somehow surpassed the laws of physics and created a totally lag free device? Or is it just running smoothly due to it going from a barely year old GPU to a 720p screen? @Ethan: Spalshtop is built with media and games in mind for the personal version. Also if companies that specialise in streaming solutions haven't got great software, then how is Valve meant to solve this software issue? Sony and Nvidia both have the bonus of being able to get at the hardware side of things too.
-
One half of your software is going to be Linux, and the other half of your software is still going to be Windows. The Nvidia shield also requires you have a GTX650 or higher. I would hope a card barely 12 months old can run your games somewhat lag free over a 802.11N dual-band router. edit: And outputs on a 720p screen. Knowing you I'd guess your home TV is 1080p?
-
The Nvidia shield still has the same latency issues any other streaming system has. If your current PC and network struggles to steam acceptable at the moment, streaming to a SteamOS PC won't magically make it any smoother.
-
None of those are really fast enough for anything but slow strategy games, there's too much latency for anything that requires fast responses. Splashtop has been quite nice for streaming XCOM, Civ V, Reus, Godus, etc to my laptop though. Well yeah, hence it being a bit of a joke that it requires having a Windows PC to play 90% of the games on Steam. Only 183 games are going to run natively, everything else you better hope you're fine with Europa Universalis and such.

Assuming that Valve haven't cocked anything up dual booting should be entirely possible with GRUB just the same as any other Linux distro can dual-boot (It's not the simplest process and even I generally avoid it, but it's doable). I believe due to in-built "security" features Windows 8 devices doesn't like to play nice with alternate OSes but I believe Linux guys are working around that at the moment.
