"Most puzzle platfomers are 2D" "But so are most Atari and SNES games, and AAA games are mostly 3D" "This is a 2D Platformer, this is a 3D Platformer. Just in case you truly missed the point" "But that's doesn't mean anything" "Okay maybe you really did miss the point" "You should have explain yourself" And my first response, which you deemed meaningless, was what? I didn't do it just to provide Madbass with nostalgia. And inverting the levels isn't a similarity between the two games? Oh wait no, the only similarity is spikes... Oh god, now you're having "exploration" within games being getting from one end of a linear level to the next. And yet you fail to see the inverting mechanic of Shift and VVVVV. I'm also noticing we're getting miles away from the initial point (well ...fact I guess now) of HIB's being mostly composed of puzzle-platformer, now having to go through each individual game that has ever existed. Which is futile, especially given you're ignoring obvious game mechanics, and trying to spin just random walking around a level as "exploration". Before the comparisons even started there'd need to be a common ground for definition. Which I just can't see happening for some reason. It doesn't really matter how non-samey the puzzle-platformers bundled into indie bundles get given it'll never be as diverse as two games of completely different genres. Each individual puzzle-platformer game would need to be blowing your socks off each and every time to justify the saturation levels of the indie bundles. And that just ain't happening. As for the quotes you're seemingly the only person that has posts randomly format specific words within quotes from a seemingly specific user. A seemingly random bug which since pointed out to you seems to have failed to materialise within your second time quoting me. What an odd bug...

It's hardly like it's a bad gift.

Santa Chew got me: Against his wishes (he even contacted me a week or so back on "behalf of my secret santa" saying they'd said it sucked), he got me Half Minute Hero (Which I'd enjoyed on my PSP, and this should run on my netbook) The new Doctor Who game. And I guess one for later on once I've beaten all other games: He also got me Brian Lara Cricket Revolution, but I've suggested it go to a better home.

Given this is the first time these apps have entered "kinda okay" price range (but like prices I'd expect to be non-sale prices) I've not bought any of them. Chaos Rings is specifically for mobile phones so I'd guess that handles well. And FF is turn based 2D game so they don't need much in the way of decent controls (I've played Pokemon TGC on my phone, and FFIX fine too and that's semi-3D). Crystal Defenders is trash though, pretty dull TD game (I played on PSP). It does have a 3.3 rating on Play mind (which there are reviews on all the games, so they might be your best bet).

So the Bastion Narrator, which seems to be the main redeeming factor of Bastion, is available in Dota 2. http://dota2.com/store/itemdetails/106611002 One of the paid additions though, so you better really like Bastion and Dota 2.

Pointing out how most modern games are in 3D and how Atari and NES games are 2D and how all these games are not the same and thus puzzle platformers aren't samey is either being super thick or super obtuse. Wait it was you last time with the quotes When I said "we've had this discussion" I was meaning as in "we, the forum". I didn't realise it was specifically you last time too, and you're doing it with the same person a second time. And you're feigning innocence, then proceeding to show off your skill with the same formatting tool throughout your post (specifically preceding each quotes...). Sure it's the festive period of year but I only have so much holiday cheer that'll buffer shit like this. Given I'd said: It should have been simple to work out that I was not meaning 66% of AAA titles are FPS and 33% are other, but yes that FPS games do not account for even 33% of AAA output. Hmm, I'd not seen Shift 2 (iPhone game). I guess you've not seen because it turns out it's even worse than I was implying. That's like MOH n COD levels of saminess. I dunno gang, what do we think. Do we think maybe Dean is a bit annoyed that most of the game provided by HIB are puzzle-platformers. Do we think that may have been what started this chain. p.s: You "explore" in Serious Sam?

It works surprisingly well (but I'm to understand most songs fit a very similar musical pattern, especially the ones that end up in charts) Also

But... any AAA game has the hugely common element of being 3D. If that's the most similar thing between games... I'm really not seeing the connection between them. Atari and NES games were 2D and many of those are worlds apart. I like to think you a pretty smart guy, so I'll assume you're just being purposefully obtuse but just in case: 3D Platformer 2D platformer. Also what's with editing my quote? (I'm not totally blind. And I can see the edits in the bb code) I'm pretty sure we've had this discussion in the past and it wasn't pretty. Where the hell are you getting this number that 66% of AAA games are all FPS titles? Far Cry and Bulletstorm. Hawken and Planetside. No one is denying COD n MOH are aping each other. Also all of the puzzler platformers you listed it's just a simple difference of what method it is that changes how the platforming works. Kind of like how Far Cry has you killing guys with bow and arrow and Hawken has you killing guys with robots. The problem is the same, all that changes is the method of the solution. (Also I did start on this this morning but had to dash.)

You should read FB more often https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=522968251056349&id=141995829153595 Also as usual: Do not buy anything unless it is in the flash or daily deals, or it is the final day (4th January)

If the games were all different they would be Hmm. I find myself repeating myself again.

http://www.gamesindu...t-games-on-kids So there's supposedly a US bill in the works to study the effects of violent video games. (of which I'm sure gamers will be able to provide a conclusion beforehand thus saving the money and effort in the first place). Also with the whole 3:40AM thing I do have some other thoughts but for a more awake time I think.

Reporting back: So installing it was a bit of a pain. It spat out it's dummy I was missing a dependancy, so I just hit the update manager and updated all 125 now out-dated packages (because the dependency missing will likely have being "0aug_tzr", Linux still being pretty fucking obscure.) After that it now didn't spit out it's dummy and even offered to grab the three missing dependencies. Then it's installed and same log-in process as normal. I now hit the second issue. You see I'm doing this on my netbook, not the largest screen in the world, and Steam default skin isn't the most space efficient so I go to add in Pixelvision. I have no fucking idea where Steam is installed And due to the way Linux filesystem works the Steam icon isn't a shortcut you can "go to file location" with. A Google shows that it's a hidden folder, you need to hit Ctrl+H to make it show up. ...and it turns out Skins don't work (at least ones made for the main client..awesome. Looks like you need to grab some third party skin manager. Also in rebooting to make the skin show up Steam had a pop-up on a suggested package to add to improve graphics, and ..well that was the only step it suggested and hitting "okay" just brought up the package manager so I don't have that package because I didn't note the name down. Another thing; this is my first time on a non-Windows version of Steam and I'm surprised the games you can't play show up. I kinda figured you'd get a OS-specific version that only showed games that would run on your OS. Not like it's hard thing to work out. There is currently 32 games for Linux, of which it seems I own 21 (mostly HIB games, I did say before now that the HIB will likely mean more games for Linux launch than that of OSX launch). It filters your library by OS btw, so that makes things much easier (obviously no need for a "Windows Games" filter in Library of main client since 100% of games are Windows games). It's a funny thing but one third of the Linux games.... I dunno which ones to try out, TF2 run on the netbook regardless of OS, and FTL doesn't fit. Oh wait Big Picture mode, I can try that and have my Steam....Fold...SteamBook(?) in all it's glory. Errm, well this is fun. Oh wait no I typed too soon (as in I sat staring at a black screen for a good few minutes while reading other threads).. we now have a mouse icon. And it's black again. And woot here's the UI. And yeah just as I expected the 360 pad doesn't work on Linux Well it's half three in the morning so I think I'll jump over that hurdle another day. What can I say, it's Steam on Linux. It's like Ronseal in the naming really and all that entails. edit: I spoke too soon, the Big Picture mode has twitched. edit2: Nah it was just settling. Also in the interest of science I swapped over Windows and booted up Big Picture and it runs much better (though still clunky), so yeah it's a Linux issue as first though.

They're puzzle platformers, they're of the same genre, there's only so much diversity to be had. About as much diversity as is to be had in FPS. Or pretty much any other genre. I never once said "they're all exactly the same game", I said "most indie titles are fucking puzzle platformers.", aka the same genre. You see diversity would be where instead of being 1/3 puzzle-platformers they're instead say puzzle paltformer, point and click, FPS, RPG, RTS, TBS, rougelike, tower defense, adventure game, sandbox, puzzle game and maybe a random game with no easily mandated genre. That, would be diversity. You can't just say "Oh yes we've got a diverse range of workers at our company, sure 90% of workers are white but some of those have ginger hair and one of them even has a scar".
-
Woops, didn't mean to, the post did start with "FDS:". So I guess first: @Fuchi: There's some pretty diverse FPS titles. And one third of AAA games are still not FPS titles (And nor do AAA studios have some sort of promise on saving us from repetitive tiles either). Obviously what constitutes the puzzle part of a puzzle platformers is going to be somewhat different from one game to another. Be it swapping gravity, going fast, or just hitting the right bits in the right order. You've also got the hugely common element of them all being 2D (except the notable 4D example in the game that's yet to exist yet). @FDS: What back pedalling? You said to look at other indie bundles, and it turns out, to my own surprise since I did just throw it out as a rough guestimate, that other bundles fit the "one third rule" too. That's the complete opposite of backpedalling, that's shooting forward in fifth gear. Also you may have missed the quotes from the games own pages but they seem to think they're puzzle-platformers too and I've a feeling the developers of the games might know more than you. And no I really don't have anything against the genre, pretty much my only annoyance being just how many there are. If there was 1/3 of HIB titles being tower defense I'd likely be making this point too. The point isn't against the genre, it's against the saturation of said genre within in a sector of the...wait I've said this bit before. (And dammit I can't make a quip on repeating myself due to responding to someone clearly not reading what I'm saying due to the fuchi fumble)

*clears throat* You're definitely missing the point. I didn't say "Oh it's a shame that indies don't bother to make lots FPS titles and instead make lots of puzzle-platformers". You even quoted me too so I'm not sure how you missed what I said. And yeah it's not the only indie bundle. The Indie Royale Xmas 2.0 started today. Let's see what they have. Hmm, Colourblind..let's see what that's about.. Okay maybe that's just a fluke, what's the next one. Offspring Fling: Next up two Serious Sams, an FPS title, Little Kingdom a TBS type game, and Puzzle Bots. a " point and click adventure". So let's review what I said previously: And of 6 games we have 2 are puzzle-platformers, which I did my GCSE Mathematics some years ago but iirc that's...about a third. With a point and click, and then the random genres (though yes two FPS games is a tad rare and not entirely fitting my somewhat informal breakdown prediction) (Also some of the games in your FPS list are from indie studios, on top of the Serious Sam in the Indie Royale) edit: I should note I don't have a particular issue with puzzle-platformers in on themselves. I'll play the ones I have, but it's getting a bit dull to have an ever increasing collection of puzzle-platformers, especially from a section of games creators which are supposedly meant to be our saviours from the repetitive and "play it safe" AAA studios.

It's not against the point at all, in fact it's my point so I don't see why you're attempting to be defining it. Roughly 1/3 of the games through Humble Bundle (especially the HIB ones) are platformer/puzzle-platformer types. Despite the fact indies are supposedly our saviours from repetitive games and non-experimental devs. If you're not into puzzle platformers, or at least not enough into them to be up for 1/3 of your purchases being puzzle-platformers then the Humble Indie Bundles are somewhat meaningless to you. (Also Cave Story+ is 2011, not 2004 and was included in the Dec '11 HIB 4. The first HIB is about the only one with '04-08 era games, the rest being 2009 and up, mainly congregating around 2011 era. HIB 7 being 2011 and 2012 games). (Also I'm pretty sure there' was something about a month or so ago on VG genres over time and it turned out FPS titles actually only amounted to a small overall slither. Which makes sense when you think on it. FPS titles aren't over saturated, they're overmarketed. This year had what? COD:BO2, Halo 4, Warfighter, CS:GO, Far Cry..maybe Borderlands 2 though it's in RPG class too).
