PSA: Donating to Child's Play does not make your "Retake Mass Effect" group any less scummy. And it certainly doesn't make your actions invincible from criticism. In fact, I think it's rather despicable to try and use charity as a shield.

I'm with Ethan, 624 and Waldorf. Seeing this completely from the sidelines, having not even seen ME3 in motion, the antagonism certainly seems to be coming primarily from those that don't want anything changed or added. It reminds me of the different times when I wasn't happy with something and I got called entitled/whiny/ungrateful. When did voicing dissatisfaction as a consumer become a dirty thing? As for the integrity of the art and the scumminess of using a charity for an age...

As for the integrity of the art and the scumminess of using a charity for an agenda, see Star Wars, Humble Bundle, political parties
PS. This could make for an interesting roundtable if focused.

and this is why I refused to get hyped for ME3. I saw the shitty conclusion coming from a mile away.
Foresight, bitches. I gots it.

Got into the CS:GO beta (courtesy of Dean). Glance at the clock and it's already 2:40 AM. Well played, Valve.

I've never played any of the XCOM games but this looks fun. It's been a while since I played a TRPG.

I'm really excited about this one, and yeah, it was awesome to finally see it in action. I really like what I saw. The original X-Com is one of those games that looks like a lot of fun but I can't bring myself to try and figure out because of how dated it is. Keep in mind, I'm usually not too bothered by older graphics, so it's not just that. It just feels... unintuitive. Seems like getting to a point where I would be able to properly enjoy it would just require too much work.
-
I'm also really looking forward to Xenonauts. It's basically the indie version of this. Looks to be a lot more like the original X-Com as opposed to a "re-imagining".

You thought a $500 collection for Harry Potter was naners? Here's Scarface, one movie, for $1000. http://www.amazon.com/Scarface-Limited-Humidor-Blu-ray-Digital/dp/B004TNGLW0

I was worried about buying all the movies individually for $50 last christmas but seeing just how much the box set of Potter costs I'm happy I didn't wait.
-
Well, there IS a cheaper box set, Yante
-
It was still cheaper for me. I got the first 6 in double packs from walmart for a total of $36, 7 I got for free on a fluke at BB and 8 was $10 so my total cost was $46

True, but they're made from parts that are manufactured separately and then shipped out to plants where they are assembled into PCs. If they just started making consoles with PC hardware, there are a few spots they could shave the price a bit. Also, they could do it as a loss leader - the iPad has tiny margins, but brings people to the App Store and Newsstand.
-
They could also take kickbacks for bundling certain software with it, though to your point, that is also something PC OEMs do already.
-
iPad has a closed market, just like consoles. You can only (officially) buy Apple apps, PS3 games for your PS3 etc. A PC is open, there's no garunteed way to get any cash back on your loss leader. Valve also can't rewrite how PCs are made. As to your second point, Valve would be the ones making certain software. They'd be the one's paying the kickbacks.
