Decided to write a lot of words about this one to try and explain...
Man of Steel.
Decided to be a bit little less forgiving after Star Trek Into Darkness, so this goes here. If you're a fan of Superman, you may find this enjoyable. I've never really been interested in the character or the mythology, though I feel the film did a fair job of translating that to the screen. Superman, in many ways, has been given the Batman Begins/Nolan treatment, albeit with less smarts. Unlike a lot of recent blockbuster trash, you can see that at least some attention has been paid to the script. The characters really are the focus and there's a clear plan behind it all, so much that I was OK ignoring some of the little missteps with plot logic/convenience.
Essentially, my main problem is that there are a few stretches where I just got bored and the actual themes of the film were about as subtle as Superman's fist. Nolan's films were never cryptic with it, but they were usually done quite cleverly via callbacks and such. Here, characters are just repeating the same things (even plot points) and Jor-El the Friendly Ghost is doing too much of the work. Doesn't help that Russell Crowe just seems to be on auto-pilot...or his character is just boring.
My friend actually really liked the opening and not the rest of the film, whereas I thought it dragged on too long and wasn't very interesting overall. It does a lot of setup for later though, so it's not as if it's completely redundant. It's just that you see a bunch of stuff...and then since Superman is in the dark, a lot of that then has to be repeated. At one point, Zod actually says, "You want to know how I found you?" and goes on to explain that and his master plan. I can't help feeling there was a better way to achieve a lot of things the film was trying to do.
And I guess that's my biggest complaint. At many points, I was wondering why they went a certain route and felt that a lot of potential was wasted. I'll put these in spoilers, just in case. It's not so much that the plot holds many surprises, but that you may wish to know less going in.
As for the good stuff, the action was really well-done. The flying looks cool and there's a real primal satisfaction from seeing Superman thump the hell out of Zod and other Kryptonians, or seeing these superbeings crashing through buildings and causing untold destruction. Everything has a real heft to it. Some of the action sequences may seem a little messy at times, and perhaps drag on too long (there is one particular instance where it's intercut with some other characters about whom I didn't actually care outside of earlier incarnations) and there are some neat visual touches. Overall, though, I'd have a hard time recommending it to the average viewer who has no interest in Superman.
