  1. I've read that the R700 is significantly more powerful (say, a "generation" more powerful) than the R500 in the 360, but I'm no expert so that could be false. Also isn't the NGP to have a quad-core processor vs. the iPhone's single-core? Yeah, NGP has a quad core Cortex-A9 opposed to the single Cortex-A8 in the iPhone. CPU similarity makes porting oh so much easier. (They also have the same type of GPU too a PowerVR) So if Cafe/Stream has similar make of CPU/GPU to the 360 it makes porting much easier as essentially the main difference is just in clock speed. The instruction set, architecture etc will be pretty similar. I see what you're saying; the similarity lies in the architectural likeness rather than the raw power. Got it.

  3. Stereoscopic 3D is rumored. Though this entire thing is a rumor anyway...
  4. I would love an FPS where you couldn't see everybody's screen at once. Use the main TV for a scoreboard or map or replays or something.
  5. I dunno; it could go either way. I adjusted to the 2-screen DS, though obviously those screens are closer together. I don't see how there would be much difference between, say, pausing the game and selecting an item in an inventory menu on the big screen vs. glancing down to tap the one I want.
  6. I assume game modes that wouldn't necessarily need to use the TV would be optional, and you'd be playing on the main TV with a complimentary items/map/menu screen on the controller.
  7. Bought Half-Life Platinum Pack for $30 or so at a swap meet when it was still new, and it probably turned out to be the best overall value. Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Opposing Force, Blue Shift, and Team Fortress Classic. As far as dirt-cheap games, I bought Metroid Prime for $8, Mass Effect for $5 (Steam sale), and the original UT for about $4.
  8. Halo:CE was a cakewalk in Legendary on the PC. I suppose it was balanced for the Xbox controller. Also, the difficulty seemed artificial; the only real problems came when I didn't get a checkpoint for 10 minutes at a time.
  9. There are different types of difficult; there are games that are just broken, and there are games that are legitimately challenging. Also, I've found extremely hard games that give the player a chance to continually retry the challenge with no or little penalty are much more enjoyable while still retaining their difficulty. Super Meat Boy, VVVVVV, and Bit.Trip Runner come to mind as recent examples, so I'll go with those.
  10. I didn't like it specifically because of the performance issues on my PC. The stuttering made it impossible to enjoy, and I only got 5 or 6 hours into it. It also didn't really alleviate any of the issues from the previous games, such as poor shooting/movement mechanics and having to replay 5-10 minutes of the game if you mess up a mission at the very end. I did like the city a lot and the driving was solid. Story seemed like it was pretty cool but didn't get to finish it unfortunately.
  11. Thanks; I thought it was something internal. I didn't realize Gawker themselves published that data. Ge'ez even Jesus Diaz the linkbaiter/troll has plummeted. He usually gets people clickin' to rage at his absurd posts.
  12. The only part that looks like an iPhone in the software is the app drawer, which, if you've used Android for any time at all isn't something you're in all day like the iPhone homescreen. The TouchWiz interface is bad bad bad though.
  13. Picked this up at Babbage's for $5 when I was young and innocent; turned out to be one of the worst games I've ever played.
  14. Where'd you get that screengrab?
  15. From what I hear it's only a bit stronger than the 360. So it's going to play catch up for a couple years then be back in the Wii's position again. You really though the Nintendo of today would be the ones to lead the technological charge into 8th gen? Whats silly is I'm mostly seeing sites excited at the news that it's going to be 5 years old in tech. Apparently none of them release that when Sony n MS upgrade their new consoles will be... well Moores Law x 5 or so. Well far in advance of what Nintendo are rumoured to be putting out. And the controller sounds like it'll once again make porting a fair bit of a nightmare unless it's got a Classic controller too. It seems that it totally depends on how serious Microsoft and Sony are about their 10+ year lifespan for their consoles. If they really do wait until 2015/2016 or later to release their next-gen home systems, we could be looking at a situation where Nintendo does have the most powerful console for 3 or more years. If this alleged new console from Nintendo forces its competitors' hands into releasing the Xbox 3 and PS4 early, then yeah, they could be in an awkward position once again. And who knows if the casual base can propel Nintendo to the top spot once again. As for your point about the five-year old tech, it's frustrated me for a while now that multi-plats are targeted toward the 360 as the lowest common denominator. As a guy who games on the PC much of the time, it seems like we've stalled in graphical and level design progress for 3-4 years. Hopefully whatever consoles come next are significantly more powerful.
  16. No one game actually gives me the creeps; it's certain creatures or enemies within the games that always get me. A few memorable moments: Dark Forces: the sewer creature. These guys growl underwater in the distance and then pop up right in front of your face. I've quit many DF sessions back to DOS because of these little cuties. Half-Life: barnacles, head crabs, ichtyosaurs. This game still has some of the best skeletal animation I've seen. And yeah, for some reason they scare me more in HL1 than HL2. Arx Fatalis: spiders. Yeah, frickin' guys creep up on ya with no warning. Still can't play this game much due to these.
  17. I don't understand what you mean by this. I'm curious how Half-Life 2, Episode 1 & 2, TF2, Portal, Left 4 Dead 1 & 2, and Portal 2 somehow don't qualify as "serious" games. My bad, I meant 2004 (meaning Half-Life 2 was the last serious game). As for the rest: http://agdom.wordpress.com/2010/02/20/a-definitive-look-at-valve/ Good read. You have some valid criticisms, but I disagree with many of your assessments. Left 4 Dead is some of the best multiplayer gaming I've ever had, and I've spent hundreds of hours in both games. Half-Life 2's episodes were both brilliant in my opinion also (you seem to complete games faster than the rest of the gaming curve, by the way, which may affect your opinion a bit), and well worth the money. Sounds like a lot of the issues you have with Valve are more based around the business model and price points rather than the games themselves. Anyway, don't want to derail the purpose of this thread. Maybe a PM or separate thread if you'd like to continue?

  19. 3 hours o' Portal 2 co-op with the wife makes for some good marital counseling.

  22. Great post, Beefy. It is as if you looked into the face of God Himself and He said, "You are my most wondrous creation."
  23. This would be ideal, and I remain hopeful for something like this as well. I think no matter what they'll still maintain the non-gamer-friendly image and execution, though I think the question remains "how much of that image will they maintain?" Will it be closer to the Wii or closer to more traditional hardware? I'm hopeful for the latter, but hopefulness aside it seems like a 50/50 chance, entirely dependent on what they think is best. Yeah, and I honestly don't mind the family-friendly "image" as long as we get our hardcore titles too. Don't get me wrong; I love my Wii, but third-party support (aside from quirky games and some excellent gems) has been weak. I remember the days when we could play Mario Party, Diddy Kong Racing, Ocarina of Time, and have the best FPS experience out there for consoles at the time, Goldeneye 007. Here's hoping Nintendo does what's best here.
