  1. I thought the Xmas 2018 thing was an Amazon placeholder and that it should be out in a year or less. But I could very well be wrong.
  2. The cryptid choice is pretty broad, too. I mean, is it all cryptids, or just specific cryptids? Who would really care if, in fact, giant anacondas are real (aside from scientists)? I mean, if the cyptid, no matter how banal, is an alien, then, yeah, that would matter a whole lot to folks, but that overlaps with the 'aliens visiting earth' choice. On the other hand, lots of folks would care about confirmation of the afterlife (or echoes of previous lives; a ghost need not be a sentient phenomena, I suppose), or of alien visits to Earth.
  3. PC version because duh. Got it for $36 off of cdkeys on the strength of some of the early gameplay videos last month. I also have no self-control.
  4. Aliens. Or confirmation that there is no afterlife. I don't want confirmation of an afterlife of haunting.
  5. I really loved the first two games, despite their cheesiness, so I'm looking forward to this one! Also, yes, now I gotta play the warmastered editions of the first two.
  6. I've read (and am re-reading) the book and can't wait to start the show, but I'm waiting to watch it at a binging party later this month. Love the book.
  7. After playing FF15 for about 5 hours, I think it's pretty alright. I don't really understand the magic system (should I not be using treasures to make spells? Should I equip spells on folks other than Noctis?). I also don't truly understand how all the various systems interact. The English voice acting is also at times downright bizarre, though that is clearly by design, making it even weirder (I tried subs and Japanese dialogue, but I found that I like to look away from the TV too much and my Japanese is super terrible). It also seems like I'm leveling up super fast and outleveling the hunts in the beginning area even though I haven't really been up to much at all. I think I'm around level 12 and on a main quest task that's level 5 and I still have a few level 7 through 10 hunts to do.

But I like it and am enjoying running around with a party of anime bros who can pack 400 cubic feet of coleman-branded camp goods into the 20 cubic foot trunk of a car. It's also pretty great to be able to tool around in the car to the overworld music from FF4.

I barely used magic at all. There are a couple of optional dungeons that contain enemies that are immune to physical attacks, but otherwise, you will likely never need it. The only other magic use I've heard of is using it as a trick to farm masses of EXP.

Ok, cool. Still getting the hang of the combat, which seems very simple at this point. Does it ever get any more interesting than just button mashing, retreating to a warp point to regenerate and then launching back into battle? I mean, I use my bros' special attacks when I can, too, but it seems like I can kill everything just by beating on it.

Yeah, boss fights (optional ones in particular) rely on (or at least benefit from) using particular combinations of techniques and such. Annoyingly Iggy has two of the best ones, so in some harder battles I'll build up 3 tech bars, trigger Iggy's "Enhance" technique (gives you a weapon affinity that enemies are weak to) then go into the menus, switch Iggy's technique to "Overwhelm" then trigger that to have the team wail on a boss (especially if using Bow of the Clever).

Would have been nice if Overwhelm had been a Gladio tech to save the chopping and changing.

  8. That map is pretty nifty, even if I am already aware that I'd have to go pretty far to be able to see the stars at night. I've been to dark places, and even compared to near-dark places in the Midwest, like where Ethan lives or where I grew up, it's a big difference at night. Even though I grew up in a sparsely-populated area, the fact that the countryside was 99% developed farmland meant that there was always just enough light to block out the faintest stars.
  9. I mean, say what you will about Ghostbusters 2013, the original movie is one of the greatest movies of all time.
  10. Hey, Dean, can you make me an admin just so I can ban Cowboy for posting that Ghostbusters 2016 is better than the original and, by implication, that the original Ghostbusters was, at best, an "OK" movie? "When somebody asks if you're a god, YOU SAY YES!"
  11. There's a reason for the old joke: A: "You, sire, have a mind like a sieve!." B: "Thank you!"
  12. I've heard 'em called bats in the cave. As in "Hey, you got a bat in the cave." Never chimney crows. "Booger" is very childish and is not really a nice word to use ever. "Snoodle" or "shnoodle" is a cutesy way to say it. Sometimes it's used as a code word, sneaked into another phrase to let the listener know they have a bat in the cave. That picture is of a sieve, although most folks here commonly call it as strainer or a colander (although I would argue that a colander doesn't have a handle and should have built-in feet or a base to rest on - what Dean described as "almost solid with large holes" are colanders, here). Most English-speaking Americans would call it a strainer. A sieve for dry goods is usually called a sifter here, too. Edit: Yeah, most folks here are ignorant of any cooking term more technical than "pan," "grill," "oven," or "bowl." Most wouldn't know what a sieve is at all. It's sad, really.
  13. Never heard of "chimney crows" before. Edit: Turns up in U.S. sources if you google it, though. So I guess I never knew the specific name for that kinda thing. Edit: Spoke too soon, the google hits were not to that phrase specifically.
  14. The excerpts I've seen elsewhere completely unconnected with the translation scandal suggest to em that it's more than a little stiff. If they're not gonna fix it ever, it seems bad enough that I'll just wait until it's $20 or $30.
  15. As someone who has been trained in translation, your argument makes no sense, Mai. If anything, the translation should be aimed at more accurately capturing the idea and flow of the conversations to accurately reflect the kids' characterizations. The examples provided on the website are ridiculously bad. I mean, I noticed the dialogue was very weird when I watched the quicklook, but the concerns of actual translators really makes me want to wait to buy this game.
  16. What's everyone's take on the brewing controversy over Persona 5's awful translation? http://www.polygon.com/2017/4/20/15356026/persona-5-translation-localization This site appears to have a good breakdown of specific bad translations: http://www.personaproblems.com/ Has Atlus been known to release editions of its games with better translations? If they do, I may wait to buy this because I really don't like dealing with terrible translations in this day and age.
  17. Egg hunts were common in the Midwest; my parents would hide our candy and Easter Eggs around the house for us to find, and various churches/schools/community groups would host them for members, too.
  18. I only ever heard it in the context of the White House and other public events, like at state governors' mansions. Never heard of any real people hosting them. Seems like an old-timey thing that's only preserved by politicians.
  19. Not a bag, just a few individually-wrapped chocolates. I have photos of the egg, but it's from a fancy place (Dominique Ansel Bakery, home of the cronut (ugh)) and not normal at all in the U.S.
  20. It's funny, but a guest to our Easter/Passover party brought us a fancy candy-filled chocolate egg as a gift. The candies inside were wrapped; is that typical?
  21. The new MST3k is pretty fantastic in how it really feels like mst3k with new performers. I kinda wish Vaughn's and Ray's voices were a little more distinct, but I'm enjoying it a lot. I'm about 2/3 if the way through the third ep.

    Help!

Not at all. Just was perplexed. I can like other people's posts, just not Ethan's. His ego is big enough, anyway. Edit: huh, the problem seemed to resolve itself.
  23. Mr. GOH!

    Help!

Tried to like Ethan's post about getting Watch Dogs 2, but the forum told me I'm not allowed to give reputation to him.
  24. I dunno. AoS is its own continuity, so Amora, played by a different actress, could still show up in the MCU.
