Well if you're just getting a job out of high school then most employers don't give two shits what your grades were, and colleges/universities are all ranked so that gives them a way to weight various grades from various schools (like maybe a C from MIT is better than an A at Podunk Tech). Also, what's a CV? You've mentioned it before. Is it like a resume?

AFAIK in most if not all states private schools have to get approved by the state before they can be a "school", though I'm not sure what get approved entails. For the most part though as long as your students can pass the state tests I think you're good to teach whatever. I disagree but that's a value judgment and is neither here nor there.

It's still a fan. A fan is just something that spins that moves air. I want to hear more about how it gets the thermal connection with the CPU. He just kind of mentioned an air bearing off hand, but air is an insulator.

@TCP: I probably would say that Super Mario and Mario Kart are the same franchise.
-
Animal Crossing is the one I thought of! Advance/Battalion Wars is actually part of the Nintendo (Famicom) Wars series, which started in 1988. Wario Ware doesn't count because it's part of the Mario franchise.

I wanted a new 3D Mario game. I really couldn't care less about NSMB. I did think of a newer franchise than Pikmin that they have yesterday while I was driving home, but for the life of me I can't remember what it was...

Avatar: The Last Airbender

GAH! This is all getting so spread out time-wise. I want it NOW! -
Well, usually sans context "bike" means bicycle.

Right, and that's fine if you disagree with their choices for the tone of the dialog and whatnot, I was just responding to what I had read where people were saying that it tried and failed to have Portal's sense of humor.

I was going to say there's a big market for angry political commentators on both sides, but then I saw you threw Michael Savage in your list of bad talk show hosts, so instead I'll just mention Rush Limbaugh and like your comment.

w00t! I was saying on Twitter this morning that I've played Civ V for 245, which sounds like a lot. Then I realized that's only 10 days real time, which doesn't sound like so much. THEN I realized that it's the equivalent of 6 work weeks, which sounds like a lot again. Dean says I have an addiction.

Gamers can't tell reality from fantasy
TheMightyEthan replied to deanb's topic in General Gaming Chat
Obviously you don't forget you're playing a game, you know what's happening, but if you're "immersed" then that's not at the front of your mind, it's at the back. I would say that immersion breaking is anything that brings "THIS IS A GAME" up to the front of your mind. -
Katara says something like "I sense another airbender". *Edit* - Something I hadn't thought about before, but that shows that bending genes or whatever can be carried by a non-bender, as shown by Katara and Sokka's parents. So presumably it's at least POSSIBLE that other latent airbenders could have cropped up.

Yeah, a few games are $60, but most are $40 or $50. I know I'm significantly less likely to buy a game if it's $60.

Over here bike refers to both motorcycles and bicycles. It's interesting to me that you don't call them bikes but do call them motorbikes, which we would never say.

SimCity 5 doesn't have always-on DRM anymore, it's just connect-at-startup. So you won't be able to start a game if your connection's down, but if it goes down during play it won't boot you out. *Edit* - Source: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/03/29/simcity-always-on-clarified-will-need-internet-for-every-launch/

http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/yolo I actually used Wikipedia for the starting point for papers I wrote in law school. Obviously I didn't use it as a source, but it's handy for getting a quick, broad overview of a subject, and sometimes for finding sources to actually use.
-
Haha, you really confused me by replying to that. I was like "wait, you're not danielpholt... I thought danielpholt was the one who said he got overwhelmed..." Glad I could help though.
-
Yeah, that bugs me too. If the article has sources it's perfectly acceptable to link to it as a source. Wikipedia is comparably reliable to other reference sources.
-
Sometimes people ask really dumb questions which justify a condescending, jerky response. For instance, if someone were to post on Yahoo Answers asking "What is Wikipedia?" then Let Me Google That For You would be a perfectly reasonable response. Now, if it just comes up in conversation, like person A says "Well according to Wikipedia blah blah blah" and person B asks "What's Wikipedia" then yeah, lmgtfy is probably not warranted. And people do use it a lot when it's unnecessarily mean.

Let me spell it out as clearly as I can: People are criticizing the dialog in Quantum Conundrum because it is not as sharp and witty as Portal. It's not TRYING to be sharp and witty like Portal. Ergo it's a bad comparison. And let me be clear that the criticisms I've read are not "it was a bad decision to get away from Portal's kind of humor", because that would be a very valid criticism, they're "it's bad because they tried to be like Portal and failed". But they weren't trying. It'd be like criticizing Aliens for failing to create the same kind of horror movie atmosphere as Alien. Maybe you think from a design standpoint it was a bad decision to change the tone of the movie, and that's fine, say that, but they did not "fail" to create the same tone.

What do a tornado and an Arkansas divorce have in common?
-
OMG this! A million times this! As far as lmgtfy, I agree that sometimes it's an appropriate response, but before using it you should at least make sure that the answer is readily findable in the results.

The help menu in Civ V is fantastic. You can look up almost every aspect of the game in there and it gives you a good description of what it is and how it works, etc. Everything from specific units to abstract concepts like "culture". On piece of advice though: if you search for a unit like "Settlers" and it doesn't bring up what you're looking for, try searching for the singular. Also if you select a unit you can right-click on their icon in the lower left to take you straight to their help page. Finally, if you feel out of depth you can customize how much help the advisors give you in the options menu. I believe the most helpful level is "New to Civ" where they'll tell you just about everything about the game.
