  1. Just to throw this out there but not everyone in this thread lives in the west. Which is where a lot of the stuff on the few pages is coming from, this concept that folks live in countries where the games are either not released, or cost a substantially larger part of a salary than it does in the US. Maybe it's just who I hang out with, but I'd say 99% of the folks I know who pirate will also buy the game if good. And I just can't help but feel there's a substantial amount of pirates are the same way. Whenever you mention that you buy the games that turn out good you're generally going to get a reply back saying "well you're just one person, not everyone does that" but when nearly everyone I know does do that, then I'm clearly not just one person, and I very much doubt it's a philosophy only people I know have.
  2. Well shit, Zynga just got valued at $10billion. (EA is roughly $7billion. Also 29 years to Zyngas 4)

I know where Zynga is at... its near a bank I go to. I should place a sign or something there.

  3. I can't see why they'd ship off the full game with tools to a VA studio though. (and at the size of the studio I'd guess they have their own internal sound dept) As for coming out n saying "whoopsie, our fault", it's not a hard thing to say. Just a quick "we don't understand how this could of happened, but there is an ongoing internal investigation. Everyone is disappointed this happened, but Crytek staff are keeping an upbeat attitude". Boom. No need to come out with this whole "dirty PC gaming pirates, you can see why it's packaged goods is failing". Fuck I wonder what they'd say if it was the PS3 or 360 build that got leaked. Which the settings on the game and pointers in the files suggest it actually is the pre-compiled 360 version anyway. (I don't know of many keyboards that come with a "Start" key for you to press )
  4. Oh yeah meant to add to this a while back. Note the dates. (also note that it's not a cracked version on PC, just the ISO) Fuck you CliffyB and Epic Games http://news.softpedia.com/news/Cliff-Bleszinski-Talks-About-Gears-of-War-2-And-Piracy-94464.shtml Anywho to copy from my mini-twitter rant: the console versions of games are consistently out on the pirate sites well before the PC version. And there's nothing done about it, none of the devs really seem to talk about it. Last year there was headlines on MS blocking off 1million piracy-enabled 360's from Live. And since I doubt not all the pirates connect to live that's not all. If it was just those guys it's 1/50 360 consoles pirate games. But since Live only accounts for half the consoles, that's closer to 1/25million, possibly even higher, 1/20? But none of the dev's talk about how they'll pull out of console development, or how it's destroying360 gaming. I'd wager there's business stuff in there. you say stuff about how shit piracy is on PC you piss off only PC gamers (and to a degree the PCGA), you say piracy is bad on 360 or PS3 whatever then you piss off MS or Sony. You piss em off they stop your future games coming to their console (unless you're COD or whatever)
  5. Well on the film failure rate I can't remember if it was 9/10 or 19/20 but there's a huge amount of films made that never hit profitability. Even if to a common layman you see "film budget = $100million" "Film Gross = $150million", the way it all works that film could potentially of still lost millions. Hollywood Accounting is a fascinating process. I don't believe for one bit what they do with numbers is legal. Fascinating none the less. As for creativity, it's happening across the board. There's only 8 base stories and only so many ways they can be spun before you're repeating things. I do however find that they're pushing remakes and such far too much these days. I don't care for them making comic or novels into films. But Spiderman reboot years after the first one. Hulk 2 years after. King Kong came out in '33 with a remake in '05. That's a more than acceptable gap between original and remake. But within a decade of each other? Stupid. Probably why revenues are down. Boring films we saw just a few years back. I know you don't like it but I think we need more things like Scott Pilgrim. A film that can only be done in film (I know it's based on a comic, but many of the things in the film can't really be conveyed to comic). It's audiovisual, bang bang, doesn't really hide that it's a film. Revels in it. Need more of that. Oh a brand new business model would help too. Tweak the distribution model.
  6. ITT: Ethan doesn't read RPS: http://dragonage.bio....com/info/demo/ (Also it's not yet up, for anyone, any platform, unless you're on a Gold account)
  7. Crytek n Crytek UK. The engine was inhouse. I don't think there was any review code sent out (I'm not sure but I don't think review copies come with the tools to build the game too ) In films there's many spaces to have things leaked, like Wolversine Origins was leaked from the SFX house. A film can end up spread amongst many different places, from the place doing the foley, the place doing the sound track/orchestra, can be a dozen SFX houses working on it. Plenty room for things to get split up and leak. Though fairly rare that a film will be leaked in that stage. They're also all water marked. Most of the movie leaks happen around distribution stage. It's the copy folks want. Same with games. Rarely any point releasing the film without audio or effects. Same with a game without levels complete, sounds n VA put in. Crytek employ over 500 people(600+ including Crytek UK). This isn't some dinky studio where you can spin the bottle n find the culprit. I'd imagine that there is some internal investigation going on. It's just a bit annoying that as a company they're not accepting any fault in this. If they had increased security then they'd be hunkey dorey. Also some more thought on the financial loss comments, I don't think they're talking about not selling copies of the game. I think since the leak also came with a bunch of dev tools, that they're talking losses on selling on the engine.
  8. Well I wouldn't say it missed the point (which is the three laws are flawed and lead to the inevitable outcome that a robot would out think them. The laws were man made after all). It did quite well in combining elements of Little Lost Robot, with that being Sonny. Though a NS-5, not NS-2 like in the book. And then VIKI kind of acting similar to "The Machines", in bending things a little bit to shape the world to how she saw fit. Though The Machines were subtle, a robot uprising was not.
  9. Gonna upgrade my phone. I'll stick my old one in the MP3 player. Still eyeing up headphones.
  10. http://tay.gappoi.or...dpost__p__35876 Read here, there's a video too though the first 5 minutes is very very spoilerific (sorry for anyone who watched that live) not so much for stuff from Crysis 1, still unsure how that ties up, but maybe something you'd want to find out first when you're the one behind the control pad. If you wish for any more info just ask. As for how far, I got to this lab place then it glitched out. At least I assume it glitched out. The guy in the helicopter gun seat took way too many clips to the head compared to everyone else. Also when I restarted that section the guys in the lab I'd killed before were now in the T-pose. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110221181002AAqPbqe Somehow this guy apparently beat it...
  11. Not going to. As I've said the past week or so, it does suck. At least from the perspective of someone who has played the first. I guess if it's a newer experience there's very little to compare it too except things like CoD, and it's on par or so with those. I'm still waiting on the PC demo to 100% say on MP, but the 360 demo seemed to strongly suggest that Power Struggle, my fave mode, has been scrapped in favour of just having the smaller "instant Action" TD style game. It'll be an okay game, especially if you're just used to COD, but apart from control scheme it's a shadow of it's predecessor. Here's Power Struggle: (btw Prestige Points are per game, not like a levelling up scheme like FPS have these days. So you start each game with 0 points n basic equipment then use PP as cash to buy weapons or vehicles. Oh yeah, Vehicles. Not gonna have those on the rooftops of NYC) And this is Instant Action: On board one of the boats that is the spawn point in one of the Power Struggle maps. In case you're wanting a scale of size between PS maps n IA maps. No vehicles on IA maps, or capturing stuff. You earn PP purely from killing. You got the cash you've got access to the alien tech. Man...power struggle was awesome. I used to primarily go around capturing places. I'd do it enough, and there was enough PP in it, that even with the lowest kill count I'd be on top of the score board with my Major's ranking. I'd like buddy up with 1 or 2 other guys also into the habit of capturing places and we'd be some kind of strike force(Buildings all have similar layout, and most folks tend to stay in the same place when defending. It's a very grenade friendly place). When I wasn't doing that I'd hole up n go sniping (once I had the Gauss rifle though), or go about in a helicopter just causing chaos.
  12. I was gonna share this in News Feed but their RSS stuff comes out huge so I'll post here: http://www.pcgamer.c...g-masterpieces/ All in wallpaper sizes, some are pretty nifty. I like the DEFCON one. Shame on the PG|GAMER logo up top.
  13. http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2011-02-22-crytek-crysis-2-leak-a-real-financial-concern I'm amazed, weeks on they've still not admitted to their gaf despite it being so fucking plain and obvious. And now they're spinning their own leak as "well you know, pre-order it, support us". And what was pretty sad. I was reading this story on D'toid yesterday n folks were saying they'd do just that. It's like some guy burning his house down, and then lamenting about how the chavs that were stood outside watching are a menace to society, and that's the bit everyone focuses on. Then a week later he laments that there's chavs in every town now, and requests money to help rebuild his house despite it being pretty obvious that since he was the only one in the house at the time, it was him. I'm losing substantial amount of respect of Crytek over this. You sleep in the bed you make. Also nice to see he's not kept up with the news, most folks are aware it's initial settings are pretty ugly, a fair few have figured out how to change them. But it's not the look folks are focusing on, it looks good even on medium, but the gameplay. And that won't change. The fact the only official demos coming out for it are MP ones should show they didn't really want people to see the campaign until the game loaded up in their drive.
  14. Still don't like folks making use of the desktop huh?
  15. As far as 2012 goes, we probably think it'll be more crap than you guys do. Most of us don't much care for hosting it. Trying to find the Mock the Week clip but most are the Beijing Olympics. Short n skinny is they suggest we just spend the 12billion or whatever in building and launching nukes at the sun. Should surpass the fireworks display at Beijing and the bonus of destroying the planet and hiding our shame. Come on, we started the Olympics by turning up to Beijing in a bus.....with Boris Johnson inside. Come on this should of told anyone we're going to fuck it all up: edit: I'd guess he's from Moldova. Just going off the video n all We're an awesome country to live in and all. But I seriously cannot comprehend how anyone would want to come here for a holiday. Especially from US. Spain, Italy, Greece are a relatively short trip away (in fact I think Spain's closer)
  16. Don't worry. We all know what you're thinking. (What would of been best is to actually not say anything )
  17. I like WD n Samsung. For ones not to go for: Maxtor. Though I'm unsure if they're even in business any more.
  18. Yeah there was dozens of sites reporting on it. Today's actually been a weird day for that. Quiet a few repeat stories around.
  19. http://www.eurogamer...e-upgrade-guide Digital Foundry recently ran a quick look at the 5,400RPM versus 7,200RPM versus SSD verus Hybrid stuff. Some games install/load at a set speed so it's not much of a bother. And even on games that don't it's shaving off only like 15 seconds in a 10 minute install. GT5 was the only one with any notable differences, though depends if you want an SSD for one game. I guess it depends how impatient you are and how often you're installing games. Considering the small gap I'd say you wouldn't notice in the long run unless you know the slowdown is there. Kind of a placebo effect.

  21. Woops. I should of enlarged it My bad. Not paying too close attention. Silly tutorial videos. Also reminds me I've not re-installed Object Dock since I stuck on Win 7 fresh.
  22. http://epicbattleaxe.com/mass-effect-2-%E2%80%9Carrival%E2%80%9D-dlc-revealed/ New DLC called "The Arrival" coming. More info on the link.
  23. I think I need to stop following Totilo. About only reason I've gone back of late is cos he'll link a story some point. Annoyingly this one wasn't done by him http://kotaku.com/#!5766336/official-minecraft-coming-to-iphone-ipad-android It was Crecente. Now I'm mostly taking issue with this because of a trick I know Kotaku do quiet often when I notice that "develop A spoke to kotaku and said "blah blah blah"" And I'll be all "well that's fucking strange, because Develop A 'spoke' to PressXorDie n said exactly the same thing. Well by 'spoke' they sent us a press release with those quotes on". So they do that. Thing is with this one they say they spoke with Mojang a month ago on this matter. Except I know for a damn fact from my doing the stuff for that games feed they were the last of 20 million other sites that reported on this. And surely if they were told this last month, why then didn't they post it last month, and how if it was Kotaku that was told this, did every other site beat them to the chase? Also Crecentes "even the android" attitude won't be winning him any fans. I've not looked recently but I know before the design change he was getting stick for doing "app of the day", even tagging with 'android, yet they did fuck all for any Android apps.
  24. Oh I'm not saying he should go in jail, in fact I'm saying I doubt Sony will be successful in their case. I just hate to think of him "winning"
