  1. Yeah, it's much easier to play around with little paper cutouts than it is to try and visualize everything in your head. So, (not really a spoiler, more of a progression indicator, but tagging it just in case)
  2. The trick here is that This is the mechanic that took me by far the longest to completely figure out so far. Get used to those, btw. I finished the swamp last night and there were a few tough ones. Pro tip: this is my evening from last night in a nutshell: I suggest doing the same. The main problem is that you can get through some tutorials without really understanding why what you did worked. A good rule of thumb is that if you start having trouble finding puzzles you can solve, especially if they introduce a new mechanic, then go somewhere else. The island is pretty well designed visually, most areas have a very different and distinct look. Go find some new place you haven't been to yet. There's almost certainly going to be a tutorial in there.
  3. The Witness is pretty rad, you guys! I just played for 6 hours straight and I'd play for 6 more if I didn't have class in the morning.

@TMEth: That's the thing - I've seen people who are like "I've been playing fast paced FPS games for 20 years without sickness and I'm getting it from this game"!

It's really weird. Almost endemic. Blow said it was an issue a while back and he was looking at adjusting it.

I've never had issues either but I'm getting slightly worried about it (my mum gets it horribly and I can't read on cars/buses without getting sick).

@Cowboy: Well, I've only solved like 130ish puzzles (out of like 600, I think?) but so far it seems just difficult enough. A lot of puzzles are trivially easy while others force you to think about the solution pretty hard. It strikes a pretty good balance, I think.

They keep introducing new elements that don't always make obvious sense. So, sometimes you literally can't solve something until you go explore to find easier versions of the same thing. Once I figured out th...

...figured out that those puzzles that seemingly didn't do anything were intended to act as tutorials, I started actively looking for them whenever I got stuck on a new mechanic. That made things a bit easier.

  4. Yeah, that's the best comparison that comes to mind. It's fairly open, so if you get stuck you can just go explore and find something else to try. I feel like it's probably a bit less obtuse but I haven't played Myst since I was a little kid and back then I wasn't so much playing it as clicking on random things until I got bored. So, it's hard to say for sure.
  5. I watched that movie twice and I never got that vibe from Blow... As for Fish, even though I understand how much stress he must've been under at the time, he still proved himself to be a gigantic ass time and time again afterwards. Fez was great, though. I'm glad I didn't let my negative view of him keep me from playing it. Anyway! So far, The Witness in a nutshell: I'm solving puzzles left and right but like half the time I just end up going "Did... did that do anything anywhere?" I started over and replayed the first 20mins and made sure to pay close attention to how everything was before, and there's still a few that I have no idea wtf they did. It's great!
  6. Why, though? I mean, I get that some people think he's pretentious or whatever, but as far as I'm aware he's never done or said anything to actually warrant people disliking him that much. Like, Phil Fish was asking for it every goddamn time he opened his mouth. What did Jon Blow do? If only imgur allowed you to change what a url points to...
  7. I'm not sure I see what the problem is with that joke but your dislike of the man has been noted.
  8. Fuck it. Better not disappoint me, Jon Blow!
  9. Damn it, getting a last minute urge to buy The Witness. It looks great but the price kinda put me off a bit. But the review scores being great and talks of huge spoilers going around kinda have me wanting to play it ASAP...

I loved Braid, but I don't know if I could do a whole game that's nothing but on the nose puzzles. Portal had a schtick to it which I loved.

It sounds worth the price. Apparently mainlining the "main story/puzzles" takes 40+ hours. 100% is 100+ hours.

Also apparently it's not just puzzles. There's a pretty solid story behind a lot of it too, apparently, and lots of adventurey vibing.

Some people have mentioned bits that are almost ambient cutscenes/story sequences. I think there's a lot to it.

  10. Yeah, Dig is a really fun little game. Heist looks to be on a whole other level, though. Really looking forward to getting my hands on it. I also have a 3DS now but I don't buy downloadable-only games on consoles anymore unless it's an exclusive, so I'm holding off until the PC version drops. It's kinda weird for me. I know what you're saying is true but I don't remember ever having any issues with them when I played the games. Then the other day I was watching some Uncharted 4 gameplay and got kind of annoyed when a dude blatantly took 3+ headshots before going down. Kinda makes me wonder how well U1-3 would hold up if I replayed them now.
  11. At 10 bucks, curiosity got the best of me. I've never been a huge fan of MMOs but I've wanted to give it a shot ever since I heard it's a pretty solid FF and can be played solo for the most part. Worst case scenario, I'll just play for the free month.
  12. I meant that more in the sense that any console is inherently destined to become obsolete after a few years, not as a comment on the Vita's current state. It still has a few games I'm really looking forward to over the next couple years. That being said, it's clearly on its last legs at this point. There was a surprising amount of high quality releases in the second half of 2015 but I can't really think of too many that could be coming in 2016. Off the top of my head, there's Trails of Cold Steel II, Odin Sphere Leifthrasir, Zero Escape Vol. 3 and maybe Tokyo Xanadu if XSEED end up picking it up. There's also Ys VIII but that's most likely not coming West until 2017. That's about it... edit: Looks like Spike Chunsoft went ahead and already confirmed that DR2 is coming as well. They also hint at further plans for Steam releases. The Zero Escape series seems like a solid candidate to be up next. I'd definitely double dip!
  13. Pretty much. Atlus, Falcom and Vanillaware games are the last big ones for me. And even then, I'd love to see those hit PC as well. Exclusives are nice and all but these games are too good to remain forever locked to a dead platform.
  14. Another one of the leaks gets confirmed, Danganronpa is coming to Steam in February. I would imagine DR2 is going to follow shortly after. The only question now is whether that Another Episode spin-off is going to come as well.
  15. Yeeeeeep. I really hope this is GMG jumping the gun with a placeholder price but I can actually kinda see S-E trying to swing such an idiotically high price for a fifteen fucking years late port. I was planning on buying this day one regardless of free time to actually play it but fuck that if that's how much they're charging for it lol.
  16. Damnit, I should've named the thread "Video Games You've Bought 2016", just to mess with Hot Heart! What a missed opportunity... Anyway, I was gonna wait until next month but... I figured I might as well go for it now while the 25% voucher is still active on GMG. I grabbed the Digital Deluxe Edition, which includes the base game, the reinforcement pack and a soundtrack. Ended up costing me about 80 bucks after conversion to CAD$, which is actually how much just the base game would've cost me directly through Steam. Thank God for GMG because that's just fucking insane. No game is worth 80 bucks just for the base game...
  17. It was a bit of an impulse purchase but I've been hearing great things about it for years, so it's not like it wasn't already on my radar. Besides, I love supporting random PC ports, however late they may be. The 40$ CAD price was a bit outside of impulse range but a 25% off voucher on GMG rectified that. Now to wait until next friday to see what all the fuss was about...
  18. Man, I really want to buy RotTR PC but it's a western Square Enix game. You just know that price is going to drop super fast. :/

      Mr. GOH!

Me too, I guess. I'll get it once I'm done with xcom 2

      toxicitizen

Yeah, that's the other thing. I'd only have a single week to finish it because once XCOM 2 comes out other video games will cease to exist for God knows how long. XCOM: EU swallowed pretty much all of my free time for like a month at launch.

      Pojodin

Yeah, I have a few games to work on right now, so I'm in no rush to pick up anything else atm.

  19. Yeah, they allegedly lost the original high-res assets, so there isn't much that can be done about that. It's probably going to end up looking better on a smaller screen as a result. It sounds like they did some work on the character models, though, so there's at least that. But honestly, I'm just glad the game is going to be on PC at all. Something like the RE HD Remaster would be amazing but blurry backgrounds aren't going to ruin my enjoyment of the game. I mean, I don't have a problem with FFVII's looks in general and those character models look fucking grotesque. This looks so much better by comparison lol.
  20. Lol. I actually forgot that RL has procedural gen, it's been a while. Not that I feel like it makes a huge difference personally but I wasn't trying to start a thing, just thought it was kinda funny considering your stance on Souls.
  21. Just want to point out that this entire post, without the context provided by the video, could totally apply to Dark Souls, especially the bolded parts. Actually, I'm pretty sure I've explained to someone here before how Rogue Legacy is pretty much 2D Souls. Might even have been in this thread.
  22. I thought the old Syndicate was the obvious comparison but I guess DoW2 makes sense as well given the squad-based RTS thing. Not sure when I'll manage to give it a shot but I'm really looking forward to it, I've had my eye on it since the Kickstarter. I thought Syndicate looked great but I tried it when it released on GOG and it was a bit too dated for me. So, a proper modern spiritual successor is more than welcome.
