  1. An interesting look at how Paul Thomas Andersen visually constructs a scene. http://bit.ly/2FbxnNC

I'll probs grab it in a few months.

  4. Did you watch the redux or the original? It's weird that you expected a 2.5 hour film to be even longer.
  5. I just got that as well for $5 from Amazon.
  6. GotG2 hands-down.It was a strong year for the MCU overall, though.
  7. You are most welcome, Ethan. I need to restart Transistor; it seemed super cool, but I didn't have time to really get into the combat system.
  8. It's weird that taking care of my newborn son didn't prevent me from playing any games this past weekend; it was the fact that my mother-in-law was staying with us and monopolizing the TV.

Would you say he's more like Churchill or Yoda? My new niece definitely looks like Yoda.

  9. GOH!, JR!'s arrival has been moved up to tomorrow. It's all good; he's just ready to come a bit earlier than originally expected.

  10. Rey was Mary-Sue-esque in TFA, but she fails at her first two overarching goals in TLJ in that she can't convince Luke to join the Resistance and she does not turn Ren to the Light. I agree that it is somewhat jarring at how quickly she masters certain (basic?) Force powers (and how powerful Ren seemed to be right out the gate, too), but it's not a big deal to me. The story and characters matter, and Rey's adversity isn't in learning specific Force techniques, but in overcoming her own preconceptions and growing into her heroism while understanding that the Force isn't a cheat code that lets its users win at everything. I think that's a very Star Wars arc. Yes, people will be pissed about a powerful female main character; people are pissed about all sorts of dumb things. Most protagonists in blockbuster movies are the embodiment of audience expectations and social pressures; it's part of what makes them pleasing to watch for a mass audience. because there are folks lashing back against the recent focus on women's issues and equal representation, of course there is backlash against Rey.
  11. Of course the EU isn't one country; I've been to doctors in both Germany and Austria, and both experiences were better than what I have had at urgent care clinics in the US. My care in the US now, however, is top-notch, but that's because we get pretty great insurance through my wife's employer. I think it's safe to say the best care in the US is better than the average care elsewhere, but the average care in the U.S. is not nearly as good as the average care in most 1st-world countries with universal healthcare systems. I am not certain there is any country with a system similar to Obamacare, aside maybe from some very specific aspects of the German system that require certain people to buy private insurance plans. IIRC, the Swiss system may also be like Obamacare. A socialist system would be something like the UK's NHS or maybe a single-payer system like Canada's. Personally, I think a mixed system with non-profit insurers with rates negotiated by individual states (or groups of smaller states) like Germany's or France's would work best here, but that is likely to never happen. I didn't move the goalposts; you said economics is hard to talk about because it's complex and I said okay, let's talk about something specific. I will never be done trying to understand what people see in Trump. But let's talk about something positive; what's your favorite thing about President Trump? How does he inspire you?
  12. 4. I am talking about civil asset forfeiture in which the law enforcement seizes a person's property and doesn't return it even when the person is not convicted of any crime. It is unrelated to the travel ban, which was deeply stupid anyway. I have seen no credible evidence of the New York Times lying. Your cites are not lies but a minor misstake and a major failure of polling which the New York Times is not primarily responsible for. So, yes, your citation of those to support your contention that the Times lies is disingenuous. 1. Whast is your evidence that the southern border requires more security? How much? 2. The DREAMERS issue is not morally or ethically complex; should folks we ho were brought here as minors be forced to return to the countries they were brought from regardless of how long they have been in the US? 3. Ok, fine, let's get granular- you a fan of ththe 2018 tax bill? 5. No, but it's one of his party's major ideological tenets and they are doing everything to make it harder to get abortions. 6. Ok, ought a company be able to fire ad omeonned for being gay? 7. There is also zero evidence of bad side effects and it is clearly less dangerous thhan legal substances. The llsck of research is due to a federal ban so that your exact argument can have plausible cover. It's far cheaper to allow it recreationally and use tax revenue from it to combat negative effects than it is to arrest, try, and imprison users and black market sellers. 8. I've had healthcare in thed EU and here. The EU was cheaper and faster. I only have good healthcare now because I am fairly well off. But Obama care is only socialized medicine if you don't understand what socialized medicine means. 9. Another punt.
  13. Yet Robert E. Lee fought a treasonous war to support chattel slavery. It's wtat he is most known for and the central fact of his legacy. Why is he worthy of veneration? Saying that focusing on a person's involvement in one if the most violent and transformative conflicts in US history is disingenuous and you know it. Citing corrections as poetry of lying in a newspaper is also disingenuous. Neither thing you point out is a lie, and the photo misinterpretion is clearly a mistake. Trumps bigoted trumpeting of the Obama birth certificate thing is rank racism. His ad against the clearly innocent central park 5 was racist. His companies pressured racist and exclusionary policies. But why am I arguing about this with you? Your support the white nationalist goal of venerating confederate statues tells me you are more than comfortable with racism. Additionally, most confederate statues in the South were erected in support of segregation and Jim Crow. Their purpose was divisive and racist. Why is that not a factor for you? If you think Nigeria is only full of huts, well, I'm not surprised you support bigots. Trump is your man based on your defense of him. I would not argue that JFK was a good president at all, incidentally. However he looks retro cool smoking a stogie in a black and white avatar pic. But let's talk about substance; do you support the border wall, deporting dreamers, trickle down economics, civil forfeiture, unprecedented defense spending, outlawing abortion, allowing discrimination based on sex or sexual preference, cracking down on legal marijuana states, a hearth care system like we had before Obama, and protectionist trade measures, or is your support of Trump just trolling?
  14. Trump is clearly a bigot. Here's a good compilation of the evidence. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/01/15/opinion/leonhardt-trump-racist.html But he's also clearly a lying, cheating, narcisstic, and amoral idiot. I mean, I get he's your man, Bogie, but you ought to respect yourself more than that. Edit: I'm also interested in how folks who support statues of soldiers who believed humans ought to be property based in large part on the color of their skin and who fought a treasonous war to retain the ability to own people aren't effectively white nationalists.
  15. Fuck cryptocurrency miners for making GTX 1080 Tis double in price.
  16. There are lots of good reasons to dislike the cyptocurrency craze, but my #1 reason is that it has so crazily inflated the price of GPUs to the point that 4k PC gaming is prohibitively expensive for me.

How long has the GPU prices been terrible? When i bought my 1070 in November 2016, I think they were still at regular prices. I think I made it just in time...

Memory prices are very high up too apparently, as well as SSDs... Shitty time to build a pc.

The Xbox One X actually launched at the best possible time I think.

GPU prices were kind of elevated for a while but 2-4 weeks ago it got insane. I do not recall 2x MSRP GPUs during the holiday shopping season. Stop this insanity!

And what MJ said in the PC thread is right. It is now better to buy a prebuild than build your own right now. What is this time line!?

  17. One point re: that thread and TFA: ETA: oh that's the point of the thread. I jumped the gun.
  18. I think a lot of Hamill's quotes about the direction Johnson went with Luke are taken out of context. I think Hamill came around to it.

    Hardware Porn

Having just bought a 65 inch TV on which I game, I cannot imagine it being useful on a desktop as a display. I have sat about three or four feet away a couple times while messing around with it, and that's too close to use it as a monitor.
  20. Team Porg right here. So much so that I got a commemorative porg pint glass from the Alamo Drafthouse. ETA: I'm generally Team "The Last Jedi Was a Really Good Star Wars Movie," for the record. I've seen it twice.
  21. I'm not making a slippery slope argument; I'm asking why some seemingly-expensive benefits of service are allowable but others aren't in order to tease out the principles underlying Hydrate's position.
  22. The DoD determined this wouldn't be a problem. Culture warriors think it's a problem. ETA: "You can’t just join the military to get free surgery and medicine, they should let people join but they should pay for cosmetic surgeries and their own hormones." You can't just join the military to get free classes and an education, they should let people join but they should just pay for the education on their own. But, even better, why should the military disallow treatment for one congenital medical condition and not another? Should the VA not pay for the treatment of any pre-existing condition?
  23. The problem with Wolff is that he's a kinda of sensationalist. I have no doubt that the thrust of the book is true, but I suspect that he got a bunch of stuff incorrect.
  24. Vulgar Americans do. Those of us with class call them dachshunds or doxies.
