Yeah, on my PC in Windows 7 if I hit the power button it behaves exactly the same as if I'd gone to Start>Shutdown as far as I can tell. If I hold down the power button for 10 seconds it force-powers-off, but that's a different thing entirely.

Actually overall I prefer achievements over trophies, I think the platinum is the only thing I like better about trophies.
-
Steam and 360 need something equivalent to a Platinum, cause that's more effective at motivating me to do everything than just making my total number higher is.

Wait, right-click doesn't open a context menu and Alt+F4 powers down? WTF?
-
Did that come up in a specific game?

The impression I got from the article was that they said something like "the small quakes don't give us any reason to believe there will be a big quake", which is true. If they actually said something more like "there's not going to be a big quake" then I'd probably agree with you. Yeah, I'm guessing that's all it is; they have to hold someone responsible, truth be damned.

Gaming Tropes There Should Be More Of

Wow I'm starting to sound like a Halo fanboy on this page, BUT I really liked the scanning system in Halo: Anniversary. Like you said about Metroid it was completely player-initiated so it didn't inconvenience anyone who didn't give a crap, but it provided neat extra info on the world for those who did. My only real problem with it was that it was limited to Kinect... -
While obviously completely ridiculous, I don't know that it's fair to say it would almost herald a new dark age. Maybe in Italy, yes, but there's nothing to say this kind of retardation would expand to other countries.

@Mal: Yeah, I agree, I was just talking about when you're a Spartan. There's only been one game where you played as ODST. Yeah, Dirt 2 (and maybe 3?) did this, and I loved it. Fantastic feature. In those games you had a limited number of uses of it, and on higher difficulties you had fewer uses. Great for when the physics wonks out or something odd happens. Sounds like theater mode in Halo 3/Reach, which is another great feature. Other than racing games the Halo series is the only one I've played with anything like that, has it been used in other series? -

Halo fits in a weird place in that, at least in my mind: to be realistic I should actually be able to carry a lot more weapons. I mean, I could see limiting me to only one heavy weapon at a time, but I should be able to clip two or three rifle/shotgun-type weapons to my armor, as well as a couple of different pistol-types, Mass Effect style. -
I've seen movies like that where they don't relax the tension often enough so by the end I'm too emotionally exhausted to care about it anymore.

Well right, and in the games where you have to do that obviously they can't claim realism as a defense. I was thinking more along the lines of Battlefield/CoD type things where even though they're not realistic they're trying to feel realistic. -

I don't have strong feelings one way or another on that, but I will say that in games striving for some kind of semblance of realism (which I know Borderlands is not) that only allowing you to carry two guns kind of makes sense. -
Added a quote for context.

If you don't do any of Granny Rags' sidequests in mission 2 then that part at the end doesn't happen and you bypass the glitch. You have to start the game over from the beginning though for it to work.

I just finished my perfect stealth run, no kills and never detected. I've done pretty much all there is to do in this game now. I was a little disappointed that the ending wasn't any different than my previous low-chaos ending.

After what Kenshi said I've been thinking about it more while playing Dishonored and I realized that I used to be like him where it would distract me and lessen my immersion, but I've trained myself to where I only look at the subtitles if I actually can't hear what's being said, otherwise I keep my eyes off them. I don't even have to think about it any more. Once you get to that state it's the best of both worlds because they don't detract from immersion but they're still there when you can't hear what's being said.

Totally agree with this. Dishonored keeps I think 2 autosaves, which is quite nice. *Edit* - Also, a way to pause cutscenes without skipping them is an absolute must. -
Yeah, I almost always where headphones too. I used to only use them when I didn't want to disturb other people, but now it's gotten to where I can't stand the lower sound quality of speakers, not to mention the surround sound aspect.
-
I always turn on subtitles for every game that supports them. Even putting aside the fact that many games have atrocious sound balancing, the fact that the player can move around freely means that sometimes important conversations get triggered when the player is too far away to hear them clearly.

Just finished a high chaos run. I've gotta say, the differences in the ending was cool, and not just the last cutscene. The final level was the most different between the two, but I liked that your previous actions actually had consequences on other levels as well. *Edit* - I'm debating whether I want to do a no-kill run. I think I do.
-
Oh yeah, I know, I was just poking fun.

What Makes Movies Good?

White people control the media and like to be made to feel better about themselves?
