Blah; anyone who says video games can't be art at this point is like a decade behind the actual discussion. What's really interesting is defining the line that divides art games from competitive games. It's the first time a form of entertainment has been widely used for both purposes; but you're not gonna get the same kind of artistic discussion from, say, Counter-Strike as you would from a Tale of Tales game. And to make matters more interesting, there are a handful of games that you could probably fit into either category; your interpretation of Grand Theft Auto, for instance, would probably change drastically depending on whether you were roaming around or doing missions.

What rare or valuable games do you own?
NeoStarr replied to Mister Jack's topic in General Gaming Chat
Ikaruga (I built an arcade cabinet around that), the gold Zeldas, and I also have that Bape DS Lite (it's like the cutest thing ever ^^). I should probably collect all the games for my Virtual Boy, since apparently there are only 2 that are hard to come by. -
Nailed it. Same argument pops up in film theory anytime there's a new format. In the thirties it had to do with whether heavily edited films could really be called film compared to the long-take, realistic shit; the more modern variation is whether digital cinema can be called film since there's no physical footprint. It's a repetitive, mostly bullshit argument that always ends in a similar way; film is more about the interaction between screen and viewer then the mechanisms that establish that. With video games, it's pretty easy to make the same argument since the interaction is physical rather then mental. Are you holding a controller? Are you using it to interact with consumable media (as in, not your PVR menu)? It's a video game. Night Trap, for instance, is absolutely not a movie so much as it is a video game. Also; emphasis on the 'video game' part, rather then just use 'game', which should imply competition. And there needs to be a distinction since the medium has evolved to the point where people are realizing they can use it for more artistic than competitive purposes. I think this argument largely stems from the naming of the media. If they'd been called Vidja's or something since the beginning the argument about whether or not they should be challenging or competitive would probably be moot. And now just to start some shit "create discussion", I'll leave this here... http://progressquest.com/

I bought an X-Box; so some of you might see my on Live again. Old one broke a few years ago and I never bothered to get it replaced until now. Was going through my old library of games wondering what I should play first. Not even ashamed to say it; settled on Rumble Roses XX. Fuck yeah, I missed this game. At the moment though; still typing with my face while trying to untangle myself from the wires behind my TV.

Even if you can't see them, there is always a certain amount of UFO activity around the map. Once you have better radar capabilities you can spot them more easily. Otherwise, you can 'see' alien activity by checking the graphs (and you should send ships to investigate if you don't have radar capabilities on the affected continent).

Now that you mention it; I'm actually confusing the mechanics of the two games. XCom advances by days, but X-Com is minutes/hours; so it probably was something more rational. It was still annoying when you spotted an alien ship when all your interceptors were refueling though. Not so much in the original.

Between beta and release, Steam tells me that I've played as much Payday 2 in one month as I did in two years of the original. And I fucking loved the original.

Fun Fact (maybe mildly spoilerish but not really): Jesse was originally supposed to die in season 1, but he was too well received.

It's hard to compare it to anything; Tower Defense was the closest thing I could think of. Though FLD is right, alien assaults on bases really only happen late, late game. What I was actually referring to is that throughout the game it's important that you're setting up offensive bases in places with high alien activity and technology focused bases in places with low activity. The ship combat was much more fleshed out in the original. Invasions didn't happen randomly, you could actually spot and destroy alien ships before they invaded, but your own ships were only as fast and as powerful as your research would allow. On top of that, they only had so much fuel and would have to spend a few days refueling if you left them out too long or had them travel too far, so positioning was very important. Bases were like towers; ships their upgrades. It wasn't a great analogy. The remake really only focuses on the tactical section of the original; but the management parts really are really dumbed down in comparison. Might not be a bad thing; X-Com Classic is still the most complicated game I've ever played... though I do love it for that reason.
-
Am I the only one who played the original X-Com? Multiple bases made it feel like you were playing 2 completely different games; the turn based tactical stuff we're all familiar with was one aspect but the overworld was more of a sim-city/tower defense hybrid. It was actually pretty bad ass. You could have bases that specialized in certain things like research or production or whatever.

These cliffhangers are killing me. Five episodes left. The suspense is killing me. Does anybody else think Todd is a really neat character? Shame he was never fleshed out all that much. I like the idea of a ruthless criminal with a heart of gold. He seems like such a sweetheart when he's not killing people in cold blood.
-
What exactly would people want from a new campaign? X-Com is always the same; aliens attack, you kill them. Best I can see them doing is an underwater setting again, and that certainly wasn't a game changer the last time around. It looks to me like they're taking a hint from Civ with the mech stuff and adding more strategies for tech pathing then just "rush to plasma stuff". Not sure it's enough to make the game infinitely replayable, but hell, I'll spend $30 to try out a mech playthrough when it comes out.

I used to live in the boonies before I got out of there for University. My hometown is still on dial up, I swear to god. There's one tech dude with a satelite connection who moved in shortly after I left; he started running ethernet cables underground to all the neighbouring houses to hook them up with something with a bit more speed, but it's still goddamn impossible to play games on it. The guy running it seems to monitor traffic since last time I went out there I spend some time on 4chan and then he blocked it. I can't imagine downloading porn on either the dial up connection we used to have, or the shared satelite connection they currently have. My teenage years were spent awkwardly trading burnt CDs full of porn from the kids in school who came from places with high speed. They actually made a lot of profit off of kids in my situation.

Is it worth picking up before all the DLC? I jumped on the SR3 bandwagon pretty late; after it was bundled with all the DLC suuuuuuper cheap and it was pretty solid. Does keeping up with the DLC get overwhelming with a series like this? They seem to release a lot.

Use Zack (frog) mask. Easy A.

The beta code was tweeted by the developer a month ago; it's not gonna expire. Edit: YAY! I'm in 16th place for the Full House level!
-
Then I highly recommend fist only completions with the Tony mask.

Guns give shit for points though. There are 3 or 4 rooms throughout the game that they're practically required for (and those rooms are always loaded with guys so you get a combo bonus to compensate), but aside from that I'd avoid firing them at all costs (throwing is still ok). I've noticed that a couple gun kills is all it takes to miss out on that A+ on most levels, even if you're switching between them. I don't think they should've included guns in the unlockable weapons. In a game where you're expected to die every 30 seconds, it's strange that few things are more frustrating then when a weapon spot spawns a gun. I can't comment on the controller in the HLM beta because I've never used one. I'd try it out but mine is broken at the moment. I'm getting close to A+ing every level now, and when I get tired or frustrated I've been doing fist only completions with the Tony mask.

If you have it on Steam... right click > properties > beta Use "hlm" as your password (without the quotes). Unlocks leaderboards, fixes steam overlay. Crashes about 500% less then the not-beta version (my experience); thus taking away any doubts that this is the best game of all time omfg I love it.
