My first roommates were honest-to-god crackheads. Now I'm skeptical about sharing my place with so much as a cat.

You don't need $200,000 to relocate to Calgary. They're putting money right into the hands of criminals. I fail to see so much as a grey area here; it's downright fucked up.

Because the story from the local paper has a lot more details. http://www.thestar.com/news/city_hall/2013/05/16/toronto_mayor_rob_ford_in_crack_cocaine_video_scandal.html

http://gawker.com/we-are-raising-200-000-to-buy-and-publish-the-rob-ford-508230073 Gawker wants to give drug dealers in my city $200,000. Like, they actually think this is a good idea. Oh, and gang violence has been a bit of an issue here the last three years.

Uncharted Waters Online. Just found out about it; played the SNES one a bunch as a kid. I probably wouldn't recommend it, honestly. It's so painfully niche that it accepts Starbucks giftcards for microtransactions. that's probably not as funny as it was in my head i'm just gonna throw it out there and see what happens...

I discovered Harlan Ellison a little while ago. He mostly does short stories (and Sci-fi TV show episodes) so I never post in this thread because usually I'm not like, in the middle of one of his stories unless I happen to be browsing and reading at the same time. Big fan thus far. His more celebrated works are easy enough to find published around the internet; but you'll probably have to hunt down his collections if you want some of the more obscure stuff. I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream: http://pub.psi.cc/ihnmaims.txt This one was turned into a fairly well received little adventure game back in the day. It was pretty adult for the time too from what I hear, but haven't yet played it. Word of caution; it's horrifying and graphic. "Repent, Harlequin!" said the Ticktock Man: http://compositionawebb.pbworks.com/f/%255C'Repent,%2BHarlequin!%255C'%2BSaid%2Bthe%2BTicktockman%2Bby%2BHarlan%2BEllison.pdf Kind of funny and creepy at the same time, it's about a jester in an authoritarian society obsessed with time. One day he spills jelly beans all over the city. The Outer Limits: Demon with a Glass Hand: http://www.hulu.com/watch/155121 Also in parts on YouTube if you don't use media fire: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lImaly19Yps Like I said, he does TV shows and stuff as well. I was never a Trekkie, but apparently he has some notable Star Trek episodes; many of which were heavily rewritten or cut by others for being too dark (he once wrote a drug dealer on the Enterprise).

I found the game play was much more simplistic then I remembered (you definitely won't need cheats anymore), but there was a lot of humour in it that I'm sure I must have missed as a child. The icing on the cake? Somebody is working on a mod that allows for freeplay (vanilla Theme Hospital could only be played mission by mission, in case you forgot). Get it here: http://forums.corsixth.com/

Patients are asked not to die in the corridors. What stands out the most while replaying this as an adult is just how great this game would be if you're trying to transition your kids from Reader Rabbit and Pajama Sam to something a bit more serious. It's a great way to learn fundamental game concepts like resource management and player statistics while still being cute as fuck and having virtually no fail conditions.

NEW DAFT PUNK! IT'S HEEEEERRRRRREEEEEEEEE!!! http://soundisstyle.com/2013/04/daft-punk-get-lucky-feat-pharrell-nile-rodgers.html EDIT: It's an unmastered radio edit. The final version comes out on the 19th. Still awesome.

So rare that you see an advertisement that's on par with the likes of Citizen Kane or Gone with the Wind, but this was definitely the feel good movie of the year for me.

A Link to the Past was my childhood. Guess I'll pick up a 3DS.

Can't tell if you're talking about Ken Levine or Bioshock Infinite or the whole series or what; but so far aside from Bioshock Infinite I think the gameplay in his stuff has been pretty solid; it's the real driving force for me moreso than his stories (which are still really awesome). I've heard some complaints about acceleration in Bioshock but the puzzle solving in regards to using the environment as a weapon is really solid and the pokemon-esque elemental combinations make every kill more satisfying then your typical shooter would offer. His first person games always have some really innovative quirk to them that somehow always ends up working really well; I mean he practically reinvented stealth with Thief and SWAT 4 is still my most favourite tactical shooter of all time for its on-the-fly commands and required threat assessment. EDIT: Ah, I guess you were talking about Infinite. I agree with you, but not so much that I would hold it against Levine's design philosophies overall.
-
Quite the opposite. Not sure what approach they took for Bioshock Infinite though.

Pretty sure those are out of order. From what I've gathered from interviews the team originally made the game identical to X-Com, like you see in the second clip, and added the stealth system later, like you see in the first clip. That third clip has to be a CGI concept though, right? I lost my shit when the soldier actually dodged the aliens reaction shot. It just looks too good. Apparently the XCOM shooter is no more. I'm ok with that. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/123275-Troubled-XCOM-Shooters-Website-Disappears

The new Daft Punk sounds so good it got me pregnant.

It's not so much to ensure you don't have fun; it's that it's not gonna sacrifice realism for that purpose. I think the game is intended to be more about the tension and excitement then the entertainment; and it really is a visceral experience. We've all probably seen a movie that was difficult to watch but hard not to talk about (something like Schindlers List comes to mind); that's kinda what Far Cry 2 is to me. It's not the game I bust out when my friends come over to show off all the cool tricks in; it's the one I play when I can lock myself in my room for a few hours without distractions and my critical thinking skills at the ready. Probably been through it five or six times now.

You know, after looking up every Latin phrase in the game it never occurred to me to find out what a menarche was. Thanks, Internet.

They are essentially mass phishing schemes. I don't know how people can not realize this.

The thing I didn't like about it was that rather then try to correct the flaws of Far Cry 2 (which I totally regard as one of the most remarkable games of all time), they just kinda took shit that worked in other games that don't really have a place in the Far Cry series. People like crafting; add it to the game. People like skill trees; add it to the game. People like checkpoints; add it to the game. Totally contradictory to the previous design mentality of realism over gameplay. What this did essentially was totally kill the immersion in a series that's known for being immersive. The most glaring example of this that I noticed after playing Far Cry 2 and 3 back to back is that in Far Cry 3, you are constantly going into the menu. Whether it be to check the map, craft syringes, see what supplies you need, set waypoints, whatever, you were likely in the menu every 5 minutes or so. In Far Cry 1 and 2, the only time you ever see a menu is when you start the game and when you quit. It may seem like a small detail but it's one of many little things that I feel turned a brilliantly realistic experience into sidequest fueled babytown frolics. I'll totally concede that I hate it because it's not the Far Cry game I wanted (and don't get me wrong, it's very well made and I totally understand why people really enjoy it); but at the same time I've always felt that sequels should totally be weighed against their predecessors and held to a higher standard and I think Far Cry 3 is the perfect example of why. Far Cry 2 is a really divisive game; it does as many things terribly wrong as it does incredibly right and it's scores and fanbase reflect that. But if all a struggling series has to do to become 'the most highly rated shooter of the year' (according to their advertising) is replace what made them unique with what worked for Call of Duty and Skyrim that's gonna lead to some incredible stagnation if we go on praising people for it. And for those reasons it's totally hypocritical that I'm excited about this new installment; but come on they have an 80's cartoon aesthetic. Also, the story for Far Cry 3 plays out like it was written by a dude whose only previous experience was writing soft core pornography; I'm shocked that the same people would come out with an installment this creative. EDIT: I was actually replaying Far Cry 1 a few weeks ago and playing around with the different render options (one of the games most underrated features). The Cartoon option is pretty close to what Blood Dragon looks like. I took some screenshots; All render options; http://i.imgur.com/g3l0GG7.jpg Cartoon only: http://i.imgur.com/Rd6lEsy.jpg
