Given this is Android and Steam is PC I don't think there will be a huge amount of overlap. Stuff like Osmos, Dungeon Defenders, World of Goo, not much else beyond that.

Well for me it was back when it was the low £3000/yr (hehehe). Now £9000/yr. You get that on a loan paid back in your wages at 9% of earnings over £15K (though I think the £15K changes as n when economies shift). You also take a maintenance loan and a maintenance grant, loan is paid back like the tuition loan and the grant is a grant. There's a sort of sliding scale where your parents income goes up, the maintenance grant (and then loan I think) decreases. You can also get a scholarship from the university, and I think that's up to them on how much and the terms. Ours was UCAS of 360 I think and you got £1000/yr. When I went to college they still ran the EMA (Education Maintenance Allowance) of £10/20/30 depending upon parents income. Also if the college is out of a certain radius (And closest college to do that course) then you get travel paid too, though I think that depends on the LEA(Local Education Authority) policies. Oh n college is Further Education and uni is Higher Education. I don't know on how it all acts if you're unemployed, though by the sounds of it there's some grants cos I know some courses colleges are advertising at the moment are free, and my job advisor had mentioned that should there be certain requirements and certifications needed for jobs they can potentially push 18-24's through on those.

I'm just gonna throw out a general response: It's Micro-USB that phones charge by, not Micro-HDMI. Some androids, though definitely not all, can output to HDMI though not just by plugging in the same HDMI cable you use on your PS3, usually by a propriety/specialist adaptor, which can be pricey(A quick look n Samsung sell an adaptor to normal HDMI cable, for $40, nearly half the price of this console). So for folks that have a phone without a video-out, then something like this allows them to play their stuff on the big screen. Tegra is no PS3/360 competitor, but it's still a pretty damn decent platform. Especially for android gaming given the Nvidia support. And for $99 it's not to be snuffed at since you'd be looking at a fair bit more to pick it up as a phone/tablet. Yes a PC can play indie titles n ROMs, though same reason get consoles is same reason folks would get this: can't be bothered to hook their PC up to the TV. It's also $99, a price not to be snuffed at. Folks are up for paying that for the OnLive Microconsole and the games on that either cost as much to own, or require a sub. Potentially if this sells well you'll also maybe see more games supporting controllers/buttons on smartphones which is something a fair few "core" gaming types seem to want out of smartphones. I don't see it being the destination for indies, but given the low price of development and the large install base of devices (anything you make for Ouya will run on a fair few android phones too) it's an appealing prospect. As you may be aware from the Humble Android Bundle there's a few big name indies out on Android already (including ones not in the bundle like Minecraft n Dungeon Defenders). There's also the appeal of developing for a console. Pretty much every console to develop for now has a high bar of entry in both needing to know the right people and having a large amount of funds. Even if you don't look at it from the point of gaming, a $99 micro-PC isn't bad either. It runs everything Android does just on your TV instead of a smartphone/tablet screen. So you get to turn your TV into a "Smart TV" on the cheap. Run Netflix, youtube, spotify, facebook, twitter, Steam, Chrome, productivity suites etc. It vastly blows PS3 n 360 out the water on that front. For people that like to tinker and have a HDMI capable phone and so on, then yeah it's not as much use, same as you could argue against the point of consoles altogether, never mind just the Ouya. Why would I want OnLive if my PC can run the games natively, well it's not for me so I don't (apart from the £1 game deal, that was nice). But as an Xmas present for the kid, let him play Minecraft, Angry Birds, N64/SNES/PSX/etc, on his own TV instead of getting him a contract phone (or alongside). As long as they can get their production run right, and extra funding (one million ain't enough to launch a product like this) then I can see it going far. And I see them getting a lot more funding than their KS too, that raised $1million in 8hrs. It took a day for Double Fine to do that. Folks really want to see this on the market, and investors will have seen that. And you bet your ass every other smartphone maker saw it too. That'll be the main problem, there won't be PS3, 360, Wii, Wii U, OnLive n Ouya. There'll be those 6 and half a dozen more Ouya-likes from phone makers. Definitely see Samsung n LG on that market, they do TVn TV related stuff on top of phones already. They've got the plants, the hardware, all they need is to tweak their android software a bit n boom they can have one out before end of year. edit: The bugger is: is this mobile gaming or not. Technically not, but given it's android I guess it can go in here.

I went with £10million as that seems to be the average mount our national lottery is. I guess $10million only works out as £6million which ain't much at all so I guess I should maybe remove the $/€/£ thing.

So what'd you do if you won the lottery? Roughly £10million or so. (or local lotto average) I'd pay off parents mortgages, pay for my own house too. Share out a few grand each to siblings n close relations for whatever they want to do. There's this thing we saw in Cornwall, a kind of battle boats thing. Two fibreglass boats in a large pool type thing (wouldn't want to swim in it mind), they have a storage of rubber balls on board, a motor, one person steers and the other is in a turret with a pneumatic cannon. Shoot at each other, folks on side of pool have access to cannons too. I'd build one of those for private use. (woot, turns out "cornwall battle boats" gets results) I'd set up a business too, or invest in an existing one. Not sure what though, maybe just a shop (I dunno why but I've kinda wanted to run a small shop when I get to like 50s regardless of lotto or not) I'd also do an around the world tour of sorts, hang out with some of you lot. Then see what I have left, I guess invest it, buy luxuries. I'd certainly want to be working on something though. I'm not keen on having jack all to do even if I could afford to be off work for life.

Wii n PS3 are both OpenGL. Even if all consoles were DirectX it wouldn't make cross-platform development much simpler. Same with UE, you can make a game in UDK and yes make it for PS3 to iPhone to PC, but you're going to have to tweak it for each platform still to get it running, they just take out a bunch of the stress. Also anyone thought maybe they, like many other studios, are holding back on stuff like Versus as something they'd want to put on a next gen console but now maybe getting a bit pissed that years are going by and no new console has reared its head. (FFXIV ain't on PS3 cos they're still sorting the PC version out). Also as noted: most games released over the past couple years have being straining the consoles. If you're waiting for something to be visually stuning to declare next gen as coming, say like their Agni Philopshy demo or what's shown in UE4/Samaritan, you're not gonna see it cos they need next gen specs to run on. Games won't/can't look visually stunning on this gen. The hardware is too shit. Look at PC and how much better that is in comparison as a sign a next gen will be coming. Heck this is what a 2-3 year old smartphone can do: And that's where SE have it right. When even phones are encroaching on their space then they've waited too long. Since the 360 and PS3 launched we've had the iPhone launched, Android launched, Onlive and Gaikia launched (And bought), Kickstarter, Facebook opened to public, Zynga opened, Steam rolling in cash, etc etc. Win Phone 7 and PSVita/PS Suite show they're both aware of the changes, but consoles designed at a time when CEOs used smartphones, Phantom was a joke, and browser gaming was Newgrounds they can only do so much to adapt with software.

Cthulhu Saves the World is neat in that you can just hop in the menu and burn through the battles, say at a mana/save point, then no more random encounters for that dungeon area. Though yeah stuff like FFXII/Last Remnant/etc of having to like run towards to the enemy (or away) and engage in battle has largely made random encounters a relic. Though I am open to a game doing something new with it.

Given the rather rapid increase in phone power of late I'm amazed it hadn't been done before. Price of a PS2, not far off in power, cheap games to both buy n make, and a serviceable existing library of games. I've a feeling emulators won't be officially mandated mind. However they're gonna need more than their current million to knock up proper production. Also can always change the name later. I've read it as a sort of "ooh yeah".

Who is "we"? You're the one seemingly wanting to steer the conversation to focus on the FF franchise. I also don't get the concept of needing games that are straining the current gen hardware (of which there are more n more with each new release) to be wanting a refreshed generation. There's more to as new generation than just a bit more RAM.
