Atom, with all due respect, I don't know how you can look at that presentation and see it as anything other than a disaster. I'll break this down. The Switch reveal trailer in October was very well received and it did a great job explaining how the system works. So it started things off weirdly when they used the first 5-10 minutes of this presentation reiterating those features but not as well. The entire presentation was awkward. This is an era where Sony starts their press conferences with a goddamn fucking orchestra! This conference however, had a bit with a guy sitting on a couch. It had title screens that were entirely in Japanese on an international stream. The translator stopped talking for long periods with one presenter (was that Suda?). This was a press conference from 2005. From the people who invented the Direct, that's super disappointing. Let's talk about the price, this $300USD/$400CAD. That's more than the PS4, for a weaker console with less games to play. Yes the price could have been worse but it definitely could have been better. Nintendo's unwillingness to sell a console at a loss is going to kill them. A $70 pro controller ($90 CAD). $80 joy con controller replacements ($100 CAD!!)!! How is that anything other than terrible?? And to top it all off you have to pay for online? No one uses their Nintendo consoles online enough to pay for it. All signs point that you can't send messages or voice chat through the system, you have to use the app. Oh but you get a free NES/SNES game... FOR A MONTH. Let's look at the games: - 1, 2 Switch - NEW... but probably should be a pack in game like Nintendo Land - The Legend of Zelda: BotW - NEW, but also on Wii U - Just Dance 2017 - On PS4/Xbone - Has Been Heroes - NEW - Snipperclips - NEW... I think? - Super Bomberman R - NEW! - Disgaea 5 Complete - OLD! - Puyo Puyo Tetris - OLD! - Rayman Legends - HELLA OLD! - Steep - OLD! - Skylanders: Imaginators - OLD! - I Am Setsuna - OLD! The PlayStation 4 had a weakish launch but it at least had a new Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, Madden, Fifa, plus some first party exclusives.
Look at the other games coming soon after launch, Skyrim 6 years old and shittier than the PS4 port, Fifa months later than the PS4/XB1, a brilliant Mario game BUT it's in 6+ months. Outside of Mario and Zelda, where were the games that got us excited? They could have teased Metroid, or the Rare game, there was tons of rumours about Beyond Good and Evil 2, sure maybe they were bullshit but that's the kind of exclusive that would have got people excited like Bayonetta 2 did for the Wii U. The rumours of Mario at launch, BG&E2, Mother 3, etc were too good to believe, definitely, but there was nothing anywhere near as exciting as any of those. Splatoon 2 looks like more of they're recycling assets from the first, that's fine but not exciting. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the same game again with what should have been DLC. Playing Mario Kart on the go isn't very exciting at this point after how great Mario Kart 7 was. Where the hell was Pokemon Stars? We know it's coming, there's way too much smoke for there not to be a Stars on the Switch. The first console Pokemon game would have been huge!
How does the system UI work and look? What's Virtual Console like? Nintendo's vast library of past systems is a huge appeal, and again, rumours talked about Game Cube games finally coming and games like, as I mentioned, Mother 3 finally coming to NA. And instead of that, we didn't even get a mention of VC at all. Do my Wii U games transfer over? Will there be just a handful of VC games at a launch? Will there even be a VC? Who fucking knows!
Trophies/achievements? Nothing.
Nintendo had all the momentum going into this. They needed to come back HARD after the Wii U. What did we get? A fucking Wii looking motion controlled game? Doesn't this feel like the launch of the Wii U again? Yay Fifa and Skyrim... just like how we got Mass Effect 3 and Assassin's Creed 3 on the Wii U at launch and never any games like those again. We haven't got SHIT on the Wii U since Mario Maker, reading between the lines this was to get the NX/Switch ready to come out swinging. Instead this whole thing just feels like the Wii U again.
That Zelda trailer was god-tier. I just don't know why anyone who owns a Wii U would buy the next console to play it. I'm so disappointed. I was so ready for a killer Nintendo console.
