  1. Funny about germination. I have flowers from seeds I threw down a couple of years ago just pop up. Weird! Also, there were some tomatoes rotting last year and I let those stay in place. One of those is growing now and is about 10 inches tall and healthy. I'm going to be so overloaded with tomatoes. I have golf ball sized ones already, and it is only the end of April.
  2. Boot time is WAY less than the normal 5 minutes. A new PC every decade or so really pays off!

On the new machine, Windows 7. The old machine had about 1gb ram. Yes, that booted in 5 minutes.

Ah, so not even the glorious boot time of Windows 8. But either way, I remember XP and a gig of RAM... you probably had too much shit on startup.

And, it was a 10 year + old build. The bios wasn't quite right. That is why my phone feels so valuable to me, I suppose.

  3. Should have a PC up and running sometime next week. Just need a card reader as my last piece.

I'm more concerned about the graphics card than anything else. It's cheap for a reason.

To read what kind of card is what I think Ethan was asking.

Ah. SD cards, mainly. Have quite a few in the house.

  4. http://www.myfoxal.com/story/22069254/16th-street-baptist-church-victims-awarded-congressional-gold-medal For those who don't know, during the Civil Rights Movement, a church was bombed in Birmingham, Alabama. The people who died in the bombing were 4 little girls who were playing at the church. It sparked outrage within the community at the disgusting act. If you want to know more about it, there is a movie/documentary called 4 Little Girls, which tells the story of what happened from the viewpoint of friends and family of the girls who died. It's truly a good movie. Very moving.

I thought PinkEye might be new forum member that Revan was being intimate with.

  6. I'm not biased (yes, I am), but Kreia from KoTOR 2 was a deep character, rich with history and character building. She was as mysterious, sometimes mischevious. She was a fallen Jedi and a broken Sith Lord. Dialogue with her was eerie and yet help train the main character with what heart she had. Obsidian did this character right. No glamour. She did not ask for pity. She was a master of The Force from both sides, appearing as a grey Jedi, neutral at first and evolving from there. The voice acting is also top notch, which really added to this character.
  7. People who need people.* *might not be an actual pet peeve
  8. Yesterday I spent some time at an organic farm, a small one measuring about 10 acres. They grow pluots for export to Canada (because they pay the most), but grow other smaller crops for local consumption at the farmer's markets. Anyway, I got some good info on transplanting tomatoes and how to properly care for basil. Plus, I got to see some awesome raised beds that had compost and drip irrigation throughout. I'm going to use some techniques for my garden to help it grow. So far, my tomatoes at home are about waist high (as is the corn) with golf ball sized tomatoes and a lot of flowers still coming out. This year might be the best year for tomatoes I've seen, and not just in my yard, but in the fields, too. The plants are all registering larger in size. Tomatoes here in California are going to be top notch this year. I've just bought another 2 transplants, as I'm well stoked about this. The squash plants are about 2 feet across and have flowers on them. I didn't see fruit as of this weekend, but the heat is definitely helping them grow.
  9. FDS, this would have been up your alley. I went to a Sikh Children's Festival. Free food. All vegetarian, and damn good! One paneer dish was one of the best I have ever tasted! Same with some of the chickpea and lentils curries. Better than most of the vegetarian restaurants I've been to.
  10. I'm having this for breakfast today. Porto's Bakery in Glendale, CA. Best place for Cuban food in LA. The place always has a line and a crew of at least 30 working there at any given time. They have store hours, but generally never close on time, because they still have long lines (and their store policy says to never turn away customers). The apricot pastry there is also something I highly recommend.
  11. Krieger hit the nail on the head. Someone's trolling.
  12. I always regret not keeping my mouth shut, so here it goes. @Fred: I'm saying that limiting guns is not going to stop the murders. If you banned guns outright, murders would not stop. People would use different weapons. Before guns, they had swords. Before swords, they used sticks and stones. Whatever the weapon should be, murdering people will happen. Banning all guns would result in nothing changing, except for method of murder, be it mass poisoning, home-made bombs, or sledgehammers. I know Ethan was kidding, but it's very tongue-in-cheek, as the NRA really are assholes. My point is that where the problems originate is in society. Not guns. Or swords. Or maces. Or bombs. What we need to focus on to stop the murdering within our country is society. Where I live, what they have done is put in more social centers, provided tax breaks for hiring from more impoverished areas, re-focused the local police force to patrol areas of higher crime, broke out the area into a voting district to get the community more involved in politics, and enacted a police car take home program to show a larger presence within the community. And, it's worked so far. I support these programs, and other programs that help change the culture of an area, changing the factors that make a community at-risk. My kids do volunteer stuff with their school to help out, too, as do I. Taking away the gun is taking away the symptom, not taking away the reasons why.
  13. Staunch supporters on either side of any issue are assholes. The only difference here is that you have a high visibility because of the nature of the crimes committed. Consider this, though. In the 3000+ counties in the US, about 90 to 100 of these counties account for at least one murder a year. Because legal gun owners are law abiding citizens for the most part. So, where does the violence come from? Mostly the drug trade in gangs + poor impoverished areas. These are typically done with illegal guns. So, is the real issue guns or society?
  14. "Officials said that the two men were of Chechen origin. Chechnya, a long-disputed, predominantly Muslim territory in southern Russia sought independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union and then fought two bloody wars with the authorities in Moscow. Russian assaults on Chechnya were brutal and killed tens of thousands of civilians, as terrorist groups from the region staged attacks in central Russia. In recent years, separatist militant groups have gone underground, and surviving leaders have embraced fundamentalist Islam." Yep, nothing good will come from this, as the press has already got ahold of the Muslim link. Edited to clarify.
  15. THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MASS EFFECT, but it's a bundle pay-what-you-want. http://slickdeals.net/f/5975080-Indie-Gala-Mass-Effect-Bundle-Pay-What-You-Want Edit: I'm wrong. See TME's note below.
  16. I only accept it when it says "Keep Calm and Chive On".
  17. I still read Owen's posts and I do like Tina's stuff. Other than that, I can't say anything is really fun to read and debate about anymore. Although, I do enjoy "Dismissing" posts by people that disagree with me. I did that to one guy yesterday there. He was an obvious Dodger fan.
  18. Thanks, GOH!! This seems reasonable to start.
  19. Reports says that officials are on the lookout for a Penske truck. Lots of speculation, but no confirmations of anything yet. "Investigators have a suspect — a Saudi Arabian national — under police guard at a Boston hospital" Lots going on right now.
  20. Oddly, It's one of the few songs with Judy Garland I don't have on my phone.
  21. I am thinking about a $500 build, but am not sure if that would be enough power to be worth poop.
  22. I'm either going to buy a decent PC off the shelf, or I'm going to build one (finally). My buddy who has done networking and worked in IT doing PC building/repair stuff recommended this site to me: http://www.logicalincrements.com/ So, I'm curious. Do most PC's that you all have built fall into the Good/Very Good category? The last time I got into a PC and switched up parts and shit was about 10 years ago... or more. I'm old. Quad core seems like a nice thing, but I have heard that dual core is just fine for basic gaming. And, avoid any gaming card that ends with "50". Try to get any model with "70" as the last two digits, at least. Would you guys agree with these assumptions?

  23. The best I can remember is reading Mad Magazine/Cracked for the political humor, as well as the political humor comics I read during that time frame. I recall them being positive about her (as positive as editorial comics can be). Mostly, during her time, we were all obsessed with the new prince. Edit: And Princess Diana, of course.
