Also, copying your mom and sister's CDs still counts as piracy no?

Movies that you like that everyone else seems to hate.
Yantelope replied to VicariousShaner's topic in Entertainment Exchange
I like most sequels to movies I like but it seems like if a movie is great then people demand the sequel to be better and if it's not they hate it. I kind of get that but I don't function that way. For example: I predict that the next Batman movie will be loathed because it will crumple under the weight of the Dark Knight. -

With software packages like Photoshop and AutoCAD where there is a steep learning curve the piracy helps a in a weird way because most people aren't going to take the time to learn multiple packages. Autodesk has even taken to letting people download full versions of the software from the site and just disabling the ability to save so that people can learn their software. Really you're just counting on the businesses to buy your software and not so much the individuals and piracy is much less common in the corporate world (at least in America).

So what about people who have already paid the letters. Do they have a recourse to recoup the money or is that seen as an admission of guilt?
-
so does this have any implications for US versions of the lawsuits? I know that precedent doesn't exactly work across the pond.

Are these the cases that were based on bittorrent IP addresses?
-
Here's the part that lets you know why this is really happening: "The court heard that copyright owners receive a 30% share of any recouped revenue while ACS: Law takes a 65% share." Lawyers are great at making money for themselves. Nobody really cares about actually stopping pirates.

Two points I'd like to make regarding the DLC. The first is the case of Halo where they lock you out of all of the multiplayer modes except one or two if you don't buy the map packs and there are like 4 of them. That just seems wrong to me. The other point is the Team Fortress 2 xbox debacle. Valve wanted to release the free patches and updates for the XBox version and MS essentially told them no. It's a clear case where the console manufacturer is prohibiting the developer from supporting their game because it interferes with the mindset they're trying to force on to players. The mindset being "DLC is something you pay for". A similar thing happened with Epic and Gears of War. I despise the fact that MS wants to prevent you from getting free stuff because it interferes with how they want to abuse you.

I still have my old PC downstairs, I can't bring myself to trash it. I probably should though since it's a P4 with a Radeon 9800. Not good for much but for some reason I keep thinking I'm gonna use it for something.

Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat 1/2/3, Killer Instinct
Yantelope replied to Cyber Rat's topic in Multi-Platform Games
MK was never as good of a fighting game as SF2. It was popular for the blood and the violence but it was never as balanced or as deep of a game. I think that's kind of why it's not retained the following that SF2 has. -

Killer instinct is a tough one. It's definitely not a bad game but it wasn't the same as the arcade either. It was only made worse by the fact that we were promised a proper home port for the Nintendo (ULTRA!) 64 which never came. KI Gold was not the KI we all wanted. -
do we have a list of the ones we're still working on?
-
it just wasn't nearly as good as the SNES port in terms of sounding or looking like the Arcade. Unplayable was an exaggeration.
-
Yeah, it's kind of like how people stampede over others at walmart for a crappy laptop just because it's super cheap.
-
The genesis version was barely even playable.
-
Sorry, at least I'm being sarcastic.
-
The genesis one had blood but the graphics were utter crap. SNES was the only way to play it, well, there was the DOS version which had blood and graphics but nobody had that.

Well, Apparently Modern Warfare 2 is happening right now. http://www.foxnews.com/world/2011/01/24/report-explosion-moscows-busiest-airport/

Yeah, transformer ratings are almost always directly related to heat. When you're converting voltages you're not 100% efficient and if you've got too much heat being given off during the process you're gonna burn up your equipment. The heat buildup isn't instantaneous though so some transformers will let you run above the rating for a short period. Usually a continuous load is defined as greater than 2 hours.

The point was that we're questioning the premise that you'll never ever buy it at any price. If you have enough interest to pirate and play the tame then it must hold some value to you. If it were $1.00 then maybe you'd buy it? It's easy to say "I'm never ever going to buy this game" and then pirate it but if piracy isn't an option at all then it's more likely that you'd say "well, maybe I can spare $10". I'm not trying to speak for you directly, I'm just saying that I think piracy and even the option of piracy changes people's spending habits at least a little which in the end might result in a loss of profits for a game company.

I thought we were gonna talk about things like MK for the Genesis. Now that was a bad port.

IMO something's only wrong if it hurts someone else. I have never had it satisfactorily explained to my why me pirating a game/song/movie/whatever that I wasn't going to buy anyway is hurting the developer/distributor/whomever. If I'm not going to buy it either way, then whether I pirate it or not the developer still doesn't get my money; they're in the same position either way. I'm not talking about people who pirate all their games just because they can, and who would normally buy it, because I do know people like that, I'm talking about the situation where I would in fact not buy it regardless. It seems like that's harder to say whether or not you'd buy it. You've obviously got interest in the game so it's obviously worth something to you. Perhaps you'll never be able to buy the game for what price you think it's worth but the idea that you're never going to buy it anyway but you still want to play it seems like justification.
