  1. First day of classes for me was last week too. EDIT: Truth be told, colleges vary depending on when you begin semesters, end them, have breaks, and etc. Thing is, you'd think Labor Day would be the exception to all breaks/holidays.
  2. The Goonies. Don't stone me, but this was the first time I've seen it all in one sitting. I've always seen the second half, but never the first half. Just my luck I guess. The only negative thing I can think of is the main character's dialogue with One-Eyed Willy. Okay kid, you have asthma, but I don't think that makes you that similar to a one-eyed pirate. Oh, I guess his hero worship of the pirate is also a little silly, and the fact they could have tracked down the damn ship to, you know, get more treasure to better improve the town from the jerks who wanted to lay waste to it. Those are minor, but I mean c'mon... "Thanks Willy, I guess we're not that different."
  3. Don't remind me I haven't finished Fallout 3. I think I must have put in over 100 hours, but I believe I'm only a third complete in the main game. I've got the GOTY Edition, but I have yet to touch any DLC.
  4. I've got the day off too. Labor Day is a Federal and State Holiday, so any university having classes must really blow.
  5. This isn't uncommon for anything else. It's the common argument of how "news media is negative." I consider myself a pessimist, but if you take more time to filter through the "hard hitting tragedy" that make headlines, there are the positive (if not cheerful) or interesting stories in anything. If we're talking about video games, then I can think of articles about positive health benefits to dancing games, the Nintendo Wii energizing seniors, individuals overcoming phobias or physically limitations. It's there, but it's also in competition with the negative controversies with video game relations. Take the tragedy (Spork's link) of the gunman who personally believed that playing Call of Duty was giving him training for his eventual crimes against humanity. Still, it's not like any one thing is inherently positive, nor negative. It's what we do with our media (i.e. video games) that defines their nature. Extremist groups have made hateful video games, but at the same time there have been beautiful works that expand the mind and emotions of the user. Forgive my lack of cognitive callback, but does anyone remember the article (via Kotaku) of the rabbi who overcame his fear of Nazis through video games? That was a positive example, but not my point. Later in the Comments of the Week segment, an individual was noted for a comment of that article. To summarize, he said that if we accept any idea that video games can positively influence an individual's psyche, we must accept the opposite as well: that a negative effect is just as possible. Maybe that's not comforting to us, but that's the way media is: a blank slate that is written by our intentions. Fortunately for us, video games are a highly industrious form of entertainment with only a few examples of propaganda. It's only the perception that is widely negative, not the games themselves.
  6. http://www.gametrailers.com/video/review-hd-dead-island/720226 After watching this, yeah, it's like "Fallout 3 w/ Zombies." Some Borderlands elements like Hot said too. I think I'll be content with Deus Ex. I'm sure this will be a fine game still, but it didn't really live up to all its hype.It was suppose to be that kinda survivalist zombie horror game, yet the impression I'm getting is that you're going to melee a bunch of zombies and only occasionally "shoot" enemies.
  7. If anyone doesn't have Deus Ex: Human Revolution yet, Amazon is sell it for $45.98 on 360/PS3.

It's also only $35 for PC download.

That must be recent cause it was $49.99 still when I got my copy.

  8. Assassin's Creed II I've "officially" beaten the game. I've know about the ending for a long time, but now I've earned it. The only stand out things I didn't like were some climbing glitches and the almost "precision" climb-jumping stuff. What I mean to say is that sometimes Ezio would act as though he were at an edge, though there was no edge in sight. A perfect example would be when I started a mission on the ground, but after the cutscene, Ezio stood there and would only "peer over" if I tried to move him. Had to have him jump to move from his place. The "precision" stuff is like when you're running on rooftops or hanging platforms, but for some reason you'll end up slightly off and immediately fall. Gametrailers mentioned this in their review for Brotherhood, and last night it happened as I was about to jump down to the final boss without "being detected." I don't find much fault with it as these goof ups happen, like, 5% of the time. All-in-all, very excellent.
  9. Captain America has a better story because, yeah, Thor is like what you said: an introduction leading to the Avengers. It's still pretty good, but you're basically receiving a synopsis of Thor & Co.
  10. http://www.converse.com/#/products/Shoes/SportAuthentics/125493C I've been carefully looking through shoes and this pair is the one I have chosen! My previous Converse shoes were amazing, so it'll be sad when I toss them out next week. They've served me well these last two years, but when the rubber has become almost flat, it's not very comfortable (or safe at work).
  11. Event Horizon Dead Space certainly owes a lot to this film. Nothing more to say then... "Where we're going, we won't be needing eyes."
  12. My bookstore has begun renting as well, which I wish had been around when I was taking GE courses with university brand textbooks. As for non-bound punch hole books, I had one that was cheaper (university book) and one that was a complete waste. All that was different about the "for this university" edition was it had an added page of the course requirements. Then again, previous students were selling their copies for half the price. It was a $120 book, so that's $60. I still have mine as it's useful, but the whole concept was ridiculous.
  13. Ugh, almost done unpacking. I think I'll post a pic or two of the room. Roommates are normal, and that's fine with me. Might have different interests, but they're NORMAL.

So you're not going to rant about them anymore?

      BUT WHY?!?!?

Hey, if they do something dumb, I'll rant. It'll be hard to follow up Retard Sloth and the Chimpanzees.

  14. As far as books, there have been semesters that were ridiculous, but this semester wasn't that bad. I think the only dumb thing is that one class requires four packets rather than a single reading material. Like, it all came to together at $24, but I've never had a class before that had more than one packet required. Usually they're $4 - $12. (To clarify, a "packet" for me is an instructor's selected readings from other materials in a spiral book. Dirty cheap, but this time I got an instructor who had us getting other instructor packets.) My other books were $32 and $42. Amazon had them for $5 cheaper, but I figured I could get them now as the savings were pretty small. Besides, I like to get new copies if the books are in my field. If they happen to be good, I keep them. Otherwise, I get a used book from a student or used book store just off campus for, like, 75% off. (Best saving I got was a $143 book for $26!) That's my beef, when it comes time where you can sell back books, there's always a limit. It's understandable though, but if you've got your final on the last day, good luck getting rid of that textbook by that time.
  15. Technically, the Point Break moment was in the last half hour. The swan, well the description part was funny, but it didn't make me laugh again until it caused the bad guys to crash, and the rest as well. The "hag" bit is a good example of a "heh" moment that then becomes hilarious in the last half hour. I think a good joke during the film was the Romeo and Juliet audience reaction, especially Sgt. Angel's face. It's still a really good movie, hence why I put it here, just I think Shaun of the Dead is the better film. I'd watch it again, definitely.
  16. The running gag for most of the beginning is that Sgt. Angel is super serious, though the very beginning was pretty good for laughs. It's when he gets to Sandford I felt it was a bit uneven. Arresting the kids, good. Going about his serious schedule, eh. Of course, I'm talking about comedy here and Hot Fuzz actually has a good narrative for the first half. Its the type of "this is real police work" going on. That does make the last segment the more funny with how it contradicts itself though. As for Shaun of the Dead, going on a zombie killing rampage to the song "Don't Stop Me Now" from Queen was both awesome and hilarious, even when that douche got his intestines ripped out. Then you have the epilogue, but I won't go into detail in case it's a "spoiler." Alright!
  17. Hot Fuzz I will say though, it didn't get amazing until the last half hour, and this movie is two hours in duration. However, I can fully understand developing a story first, and thus having it fall apart because of the ridiculous motives of the N.W.A. There were funny bits through those three quarters of the film, but it's a film you have to endure a bit before you begin to really bust a gut. Now Shaun of the Dead, that was pretty much hilarious throughout its entirety. Again, it sets up a bit of a bland story, but once the zombies enter it never stops.
  18. Eff, I'm torn between games! I really want to get into Human Revolution because renting it wouldn't be as satisfying for a game so well received. Renting is for those games that are mediocre or ones you have a slight interest in. However, I've pre-order AC: Revelations, but I have yet to play Brotherhood. I don't know if there are any other games of interest in September, but there will be Arkham City in October and then Revelations in November.
  19. My brother-in-law is an engineer. He's one bad motha... "Shut yo mouth!" What? I'm just talking about engineers.
  20. I've done that, and while it wasn't awkward, it was frustrating because I've got one of the most nagging sisters on the planet.
  21. I'm packin' up and getting ready to venture downstairs. The only unknown is the roommate factor. Even the guy I'm switching with has barely seen them, and he has been here for a whole week.

Yep, this would be the 4th set. My first set wasn't that bad, but there definitely were some annoyances.

  22. Double Post, but for reason. Gotta hand it to them for at least making an effort to explain everything. Also, it's probably concept art for the heck of it, but in the middle of the video you'll see a picture of an American Civil War Assassin. Perhaps I was on to something... I mean, others have picked up on it. http://www.pcgamer.c...l-war-assassin/
  23. There's nothing wrong when a mom's around. Now if he keeps asking questions like, "How" and "What," then you might have room for concern.
  24. I'm thinking of getting the AC2 DLC, but I've got a question. Are the "Templar Secret Locations" worth anything besides extended duration? Like, do they actually affect the story?

    1. toxicitizen

      toxicitizen

They're pretty much the same as the other secret locations, so not really.

Battle of Forli and Bonfire of the Vanities do fit into the story, but they mostly feel like padding. So I guess get them if you want to add a few hours to your experience. I found them enjoyable enough.

    2. CorgiShinobi

      CorgiShinobi

Well I ask because there's Sequence 13 with and without the locations. About $3 difference.

    3. Faiblesse Des Sens

      Faiblesse Des Sens

I always loved the templar secret locations. Awesome platforming you don't get in the rest of the game. Whatever the first DLC released was I remember sucking btw.

  25. I was thinking more of the time gap between games than actual locations. The first was set in the early 13th century, right? Then Ezio is in the late 15th to early 16th century. I thought maybe something progressive closer would be appropriate, though the Pilgrim thing was more of a joke.
