  1. While not formally announced, it's been known for a while that Ubisoft Toronto are working on a follow-up to Conviction, presumably with the same type of faster gameplay. There's also Thief 4, which I have high hopes for considering the amazing job Eidos Montreal did with Human Revolution.
  2. Well, I think I've found my 2011 GOTY. And I don't even need to play it. It gets real good around 0:35

  3. Holy crap, I totally posted this in the wrong thread. I didn't beat it, I just ordered it from amazon lol
  4. All this talk about Revengeance and Platinum Games made me remember I still haven't played this. It's been 20 bucks for long enough that I don't think it's going to go down any more than that, so yeah, time to buy.
  5. Hahahaha, I LOVE that song. That episode was pure genius.
  6. Yeah, kinda feels like they'll do something utterly retarded. Like Rose and the kid getting killed and Raiden going psycho over it. Which could actually make for a pretty crazy and silly fun game. Just very weird for Metal Gear.
  7. Yeah, the Bioware name really seems like it's unnecessarily being slapped on way too many things now. I have no problem with a studio falling under the Bioware umbrella making a RTS game because I realize it's not like it's the Mass Effect team suddenly making a C&C game. Also, according to an interview on IGN, Victory actually have staff that have worked on the C&C series before. But you have to wonder why the hell they even renamed them to Bioware in the first place. I mean, I get that there's a certain pedigree behind the name (which has arguably been kind of diminishing rapidly these past couple of years). And it actually makes sense when it comes to something RPG-related, like the studio working on The Old Republic. But here, I don't know, maybe like Dean said they're simply trying to cash in on brand recognition. Just seems kinda stupid, to be honest.
  8. Yeah, okay. That makes sense, I guess. Also, I was writing something about how the story is an important aspect of MGS, but then SixTwo chimed in with how KojiPro is handling writing and story. So yeah, that's cool. I'm still worried about the tone, but really, it's way too early to say for sure. I guess the only thing that still really bothers me is that it's set after MGS4. And it's been almost 4 years, so this is all the spoiler warning I'm going to give. The ending of MGS4 really implied that Raiden was done with all the fighting and going to live a happy, quiet life with Rose and his son. So they better have a damn good reason for why he'd get re-cyborg'd. I mean, I'm sure they'll come up with a plausible excuse, but it just seems like it's undoing how nicely MGS4 wrapped up his story.
  9. Where have you heard it's not canon? It would seem like a weird thing to say this early on. "We're making this new Metal Gear game, but it's totally irrelevant to the story you all like!" lol But anyway, just to be clear, I'm not taking issues with the game or angry about it or anything. I just feel like it's an extremely weird direction to take for the series. Not really sold on it, but I'm open to the game still being fun. And the original concept for Rising never really gave me the impression it was going to be about stealth all that much. I don't think the game genre ever really changed. It's mostly the switch in tone that bugs me. MGSR seemed like it was going to be playing it straight like most of the Metal Gear games do.
  10. That's really not a valid comparison. Final Fantasy is a series made up of completely unrelated games all taking place in different kinds of worlds. You can really do whatever the hell you want, slap the FF name on it and it doesn't mean anything. The Metal Gear series, on the other hand, has mostly been adhering to one world and one timeline. Sure, there's occasional side game like Ghost Babel or the Acid titles that doesn't really fit into the canon, but Rising is obviously more high profile than those ever were. Like SixTwo said, there's no doubt that Platinum makes amazing action games and I'm sure this will be no different. Their style just doesn't seem like a good fit for the tone of the Metal Gear series.
  11. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. What. The. Hell. Platinum Games are cool, but holy crap, that's some of the dumbest shit I've seen all year. That does NOT look like Metal Gear. :/

It seems to me they've explained their concerns pretty well, ones that I share. The game doesn't look bad, but the MASSIVE changes they've made clearly don't fit the Metal Gear universe in the slightest.

      toxicitizen

Exactly. Also, it seems they've changed the story and it now takes place years after MGS4. I get why a new dev brought on board might want to do that and how it would give them more freedom to do their thing. But it doesn't make much sense when you take into account how MGS4 ended...

      FMW

Does a Platinum Games combat fest not suit the world of Metal Gear, or does it not fit Solid Snake? I've only seen the MGS 4 Raiden trailer, but it seems like this gameplay fits in with that movie extremely well.

  12. Still plenty of time for that. I'm actually planning on finishing more than just one before christmas. I'm currently working on the MGS HD Collection, but decided to make it more interesting and am going through the whole MGS series instead. Just started 3, next is 4 and I'll end things with Peace Walker, the only one I haven't played before. I'm also planning on finishing Shadow of the Colossus. Grabbed the HD Collection last month but only managed to finish Ico. I *MIGHT* try and get back into Dark Souls. But that's probably not going to happen for a while.
  13. So, I think that's around 5PM for me. Should be able to make it. Reinstalled the game earlier, so I'm all set.
  14. I agree, this is getting to the point where there is absolutely nothing special about them anymore. That being said, even though that's probably not how a lot of people look at it, these are less about cheap games and more about raising money for charity. So in that sense, more is good. But still, if things don't slow down a bit, the indie market is definitely going to suffer sooner rather than later.
  15. A friend of mine recently discovered this and introduced me to it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJd2mdtUJ7w I listen to this on my walkman and feel like my life is a shitty 80s scifi movie It is awesome.
  16. Well I've made some arrangements at school and will be taking my first introductory programming classes next semester! Should give me a slight edge for when I start my "proper" CS program. Kind of excited but a bit nervous at the same time. If it turns out I hate it or am terrible at it, then I'll have to rethink my whole plan and I have no idea what I'd switch to!

I'd probably go that route. I enjoy using SQL and learned Basic back in 8th grade (during the late 80's - I'm old). Those were always easy and fun for me. PLC programming kinda hits that middle ground, and you get to set up networks and play with topology. Way more fun than Accounting.

Thanks, always good to know about as many options as possible! And yeah, I understand that learning programming is a lot of work. I've done my basic research on the subject so I think I'm past the point where I can get scared away that easily :P

I'm also aware of the nature of the games industry, so I realize it's possible I'll just hate it and want to find something in another field. Still feel like it's something I have to at least try, though.

Well, I wish you luck. If you can come up with original ideas, there may never have been such a good opportunity for indie game dev now - it's hard until you get your big break, but an iPhone hit can catapult you to fame. I've thrown around a few ideas for games; my skill is just more broad than deep - can use a dozen or so languages, but hardly ever touched APIs and never really mastered one particular language since I just do it for fun.

  17. Damnit, 5$ Bastion on Steam. Was holding off on buying in hopes of a PSN release... but now, there is temptation.

They may not standout at first, but the songs will work their way inside your head. In a good way.

^ What Hottie said. I've had the CD in my car ever since I got it two months ago. Songs like Bynn the Breaker, Percy's Escape, and Spike in the Rail work perfectly and really get stuck in your head. There are maybe one or two passable tracks at the most and even those are good.

Well I am now the proud owner of a Bastion and a Bastion soundtrack.

Also, I unmuted the trailer as I was making my purchase and, assuming what plays in it is from the soundtrack, it actually sounded pretty good!

  18. A friend of mine played them and says they're good. I bought them and am also downloading all that you've listed. (God I love PS+!) I remember trying a demo a long time ago and the setting seemed pretty cool as well. I figure Tycho's writing alone should provide some entertainment, at the very least. I probably wouldn't have bought it if it wasn't for Zeboyd resurrecting Episode 3, though.
  19. Hey Ethan, I think you bought the Splinter Cell HD Collection a while back? I'm thinking of getting it. Is it any good?

It looked nice. I mean, it's like when you play a PC game from 5 years ago and can turn the resolution way up and turn on 16x antialiasing and filtering, and turn on every little post-processing filter. It still doesn't look like current-gen graphics, but it looks nice and smooth and crisp.

      Alright, cool. Thanks.

I own them on Steam but the PC versions are kinda broken since some of the lighting tech is no longer supported in current graphic drivers. Hard to avoid spotlights when you can't see them :/

Proper 16:9 support is also a nice bonus.

    4. TheMightyEthan

      TheMightyEthan

Huh, I would have thought there'd be better support for legacy Unreal engine, since basically EVERYTHING runs on it.

  20. 10$ on PSN. I used to own a physical copy, but I sold it last year when I needed some cash to get L.A. Noire. I always meant to get it back and 10$ seemed like the right price. I sure as hell hope my save file from the physical version will be compatible with it because I got something like 70+ hours invested in it.
  21. I feel very much the same way. I wouldn't hesistate to recommend it to a fan of the series. It's a great game very much worth playing. That being said, the problems with a yearly dev cycle are really more apparent in this one, so criticism is inevitable. The way I see it, this was the last game like this I was willing to play. If ACIII is another one like this (as in the same goddamned thing with only superficial improvements), then I certainly won't be getting it at launch/full price.
  22. Agreed with pretty much all of this. Except for the bombs. They might not have felt necessary, but some of them were pretty damn useful. Mostly the smoke and shrapnel types.
  23. Yeah, that's pretty much what I meant by "directs his games like they're movies". But that's a better way to put it. I started disc 2 last night and saved right as I was about to enter the room where REX is. Seemed like a good place to stop. I was also kinda drunk and it was past 4 AM I don't have as much time to play as I'd like since I have less than 2 weeks to prepare for a math final and have a shitload of subject to cover since I'm quite a few weeks behind. But hopefully I'll be able to finish it tonight and get started on MGS2
  24. Brink is 5$ on Steam. Does anyone here own it? I'm curious, but since the game bombed pretty hard, I would expect it to be pretty dead after all this time. Plus, I think it was kinda broken at some point ? Was it ever fixed and, more importantly, did all the steam sales and free week-ends manage to keep it alive ?
