Which franchise really started the Modern setting for FPS'
Hot Heart replied to excaliburps's topic in General Gaming Chat
It seems to be the case that something which 'popularises' something isn't always necessarily the first. People might point to Gears of War for cover systems and Halo for regenerating health/shields, but they probably weren't the first. You'd have to look at a case-by-case setting for where developers are drawing their references. Couple that with the fact that you need to examine if this 'modern setting' is all that CoD is apparently inspiring. Seems people are more interested in these rollercoaster ride sort of shooting galleries with scripted events and such. I'm no expert on FPSs because I only play the odd exception so, if I were to avoid sweeping generalisations, I couldn't pass judgement on a lot of what the industry is doing, but there have always been military games set in modern times; just not a lot of them go for the 'blockbuster' element like CoD. Seems quite a few are based on squad tactics and incorporate simulation elements (which seems more of a PC thing as of late). -

I'm gonna have to start writing more very soon. But some of the openers were pretty dire and not in a very funny way... 1.14 - Forced Entry

Nope, no Will Smith. http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/full-list-of-stuff-white-people-like/ I can't say I love Will Smith but I haven't really seen any films to really make me dislike him. Even in dramatic roles, he always seems to turn in a 'tolerable' performance. But, yeah, maybe I just haven't see enough to dislike him (same with Michael Cera). Not even stuff I've heard people say he's good in, like Ali.

Grabbed one of these because I wanted a MIDI guitar and obviously wanted to give it a go with Rock Band 3.

Got Hancock on DVD for real cheap and gave it a watch. It's certainly an odd film. It had some good moments, but the shifts in tone just felt a bit off. I don't know if it was studio meddling or just poor realisation early on, but some of the typical tropes felt tacked on and it was never entirely cohesive. Part of the reason I wanted to watch it was because I'd heard so much about the various changes the script had gone through. Apparently, it began as a dark comedy sort of story, titled 'Tonight, He Comes'; in which the superhero shouldn't have sex, because his ejaculations cause women to literally explode. I'm not sure whether to blame the director or the specific actor but one of the 'twists' was just screaming at you in every lingering shot. I can't say I regret seeing it though, which is why I can't say it was crap.

Figured I should update this Grabbed a couple of DVDs - Hancock (because it was very cheap and I wanted to see it) - Sherlock (latest BBC series, also because it was cheap, and will be part of a gift for my mum's upcoming birthday) And thanks to Gerbil's link for Shopto.net I grabbed the Fender Mustang Pro controller for Rock Band 3 since, there, it was the cheapest I've seen it and an extra £2 off can't hurt.

Yeah, not sure how I missed that. Considering it's the title and all. Either way, I doubt it'll make a great deal of difference. I'm gonna have to do a lot of thinking about mine. I still need to do my 3x3 influences thing too...

The Burnout Revenge that I played on Xbox was not entirely different to the Burnout Revenge I played on 360 Plus, with enough people contributing I don't think the differences will really matter come the final 15.
