  1. Their point is that a fetus is a living person with a soul and so whether or not you can get pregnant from rape is irrelevant, you should still ban the abortions.
  2. Imaginary ones. There was a study from 1996 that found that you're about half as likely to get pregnant from rape as you are from consensual unprotected sex, but other studies have actually found that you're more likely to get pregnant from rape than consensual unprotected sex (which is counter-intuitive to say the least). A lot of the differences apparently come from how the studies defined "unprotected". Either way though it's far from impossible. This is all based on info my wife looked up last night when we were talking about this, so I don't have links to back it up.
  3. Yeah. Again, not defending him, I just think people are getting upset about the wrong aspect of what he said. Get mad that a member of the House Science Committee is spreading such misinformation, don't get made about one word that has a slightly ambiguous meaning.
  4. To me it sounded like "Supposed rape victims who get pregnant must be lying because you can't get pregnant if you're raped."
  5. How is there not already a thread for this? Especially considering the raving I've been hearing about it. Anyway, this is why I came here:
  6. To play devil's advocate here, I took what he said to mean "actual rape" as in "if you're not lying", rather than any distinction between certain rapes being "real" rapes and others not. That said, obviously the stuff about women not being able to get pregnant from rape is complete bullshit. But I didn't think the "legitimate rape" phrasing was anything worse than a poor choice of words that has been distorted by his opponents. I count myself among his opponents, but I still think that that particular choice of words is a stupid thing to be focusing on.
  7. I've got a Steam Community Beta invite if anyone wants it.

  8. The problem with sixaxis for most devs is that it doesn't translate to 360/PC, so there's no reason to spend the time on it. I don't get why 1st party devs don't use it more for little stuff like that though.
  9. I think the aiming's fine, though I did crank the motion aiming all the way up. Having played through Gravity Rush already I'd gotten used to doing gross aiming with the stick and then using the tilt to make fine adjustments, and I really like that setup. In fact I wish more games on PS3 would make use of the DS3's tilt function to do something similar.
  10. I started playing Uncharted: Golden Abyss last night. So far I'm enjoying it. Nearly all the touch/tilt controls are entirely optional, which is fucking wonderful. My only real complaint is that the FOV is way too wide, so it looks like I'm looking through a fish-eye lens if I have it farther than about 6 inches from my face.
  11. Yeah, that seemed really weird to me too.
  12. I liked it a lot. There was a part right at the beginning of the second realm where I thought it kinda dragged, and it seemed like the main quest just had you doing busywork. That made me nervous, but after that one part it cleared back up and overall I thought it was very well done. *Edit* - Ending was kind of anticlimactic though.
  13. We started out with dumb terminals and mainframes, then moved to powerful local computers, now with the push for "cloud" everything we're heading back toward the dumb terminal/mainframe setup. Technology is weird.

Yeah... I've seen thin clients rise and fall repeatedly but never really stick. Now that it's so easy to cheaply pack things with computing power... I think a lot of the cloud push just facilitates surveillance and dependence on ongoing service from the host; mainly the latter. The more you can sell as a service rather than a feature, the better.

Yeah, with the exception of stuff like OnLive the new model seems to be focused more on keeping your data in the cloud so it's accessible everywhere, rather than having the computing power be in the cloud.

I guess for the majority. But there's plenty of cloud productivity suites, rentable number crunchers, etc

  14. One word: latency. Anything even remotely action-y was completely unplayable here because of the latency. That's a product of the US being so big though I think so the servers were far away, and it wasn't as much a problem on the coasts or in the UK. Apparently although they claimed they had 2 million users (based on total accounts created) their peak simultaneous user count was something like 1800. (*Edit* - That was average, not peak.) Kind of that happened...
  15. I think they might do okay at first, but as soon as the 720 and PS4 release they're going to have the same problem the Wii did: being woefully under-powered and so unable to run multiplats. I think that's cost them more 3rd party devs than anything else this gen.
  16. I don't know where it went, but you can still get to it by clicking the Special BBCode button in the top left and then select Media from the drop-down box.
  17. Also, I think if he's trying to avoid being spirited away to the US he chose the wrong country to seek asylum from. Fucking with/kidnapping people from South American countries is like the US national pastime.
  18. The reason I talked about disappearing him was because everyone talked about how they were worried once the US got its hands on him he'd just disappear into a hole somewhere never to be heard from again. However, I think for the very same reasons you mentioned about how high-profile it is that he'd be tried very publicly, with all the i's dotted and t's crossed, to show everyone that it's all on the up and up. Assuming that the US was involved in this at all (which I'm still not convinced of) the "blame Ecuador" solution does look pretty good though. *Edit* - Here's what I think actually happened: he didn't want to go to Sweden for the rape charges, so he claims Sweden's just doing this at the request of the US and makes a big stink about it so he can avoid the Swedish charges. That, or he honestly believes that it is at the US request but is wrong, because I don't think it being for the US makes sense for the reasons I've already explained.
  19. I don't even think I'd award that. It's clearly the title of the game, not the developer, which is why it's so prominent. And it's a common word, like "Metro". It's not like they named it Sins of a Solar Empire: Firaxis or something.
  20. If none of you can front the whole $180 I'll do it, free of charge. I'll want the paypal payments first though. *Edit* - Actually, is it possible to gift out all 4 copies of a 4 pack, or does it automatically redeem one for the purchaser?
  21. http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/16/rebellion-sues-stardock-for-its-use-of-the-word-rebellion/ I have an idea for game developers: how about instead of these ridiculous lawsuits you spend your time, money and effort actually making games?
  22. According to an interview on Game Informer's site (ewww, I know...) the player will have control of fast-forwarding and rewinding in the game, so you won't have to watch the same scene play out over and over again only making one change each time. If you fail you can just rewind to the point you need to change and try again.
  23. That doesn't explain why they don't chill any of their other drinks either though.
  24. It's like they're trying to make it as awful as possible.
