I saw "It's Kind of a Funny Story," and you know, it wasn't that bad. I would put it more so in the Good thread instead of the OK one because there was actually some good bits to it.
I can see where it doesn't appeal to everyone. Some kid feels like he's suicidal and it comes to the point where he checks in to a psych ward. It doesn't follow the cliches of other movies with psych wards though, and I appreciate that because at times those cliches can be overblown. Bobby (Zach's character) is what probably puts this into a Good movie.
I say this because, really, the main character isn't that messed up. The whole time, I swear most everyone should come to realize, "Dude, everyone goes through that same crap. Deal with it!" That said, I think this film makes a perfect commentary on the attitude where teens have that psychological delusion. In the end, what did he need to do?
Relax, grow some balls, and find a hobby. He states that while he hasn't been "cured" that he can at least handle each day onward. To me, again, this is life. I guess everyone has the same "issue," but as you come to learn, as long as you have friends and family, you'll be alright. Heck, even the other patients look at the kid and wonder why he thinks he has it bad.
But again, this follows the melodrama teens have where school and stupid crap somehow equate to the end of times. Eventually, you see how he recovers and lives his life. Truthfully, I think it was a good example of how people could balance their lives.
P.S.
There is this relationship-girl etc-stuff, and while it was completely hacked into the plot, and conveniently put in place, it served a great purpose towards the end goal.
